Five StarsBy emAwonderful ride through fantasy0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Better than the last.By Jan JohansenIts probably a 3.5 star book. Definitely an improvement on the last one, but not back to the lofty heights that is characteristic of the series. The good: More aces and more action. Social commentary is seasoning again, not a main dish. The authors seems to have reined in what previously came across as a distaste for writing superpowers, which kind of undermined the central premise of the series. The bad: Well. Internal consistency and plausibility is suffering. Despite serious departures from our timeline since the 40s, different presidents and nation-states, Putin is still in charge of Russia. How did that happen ? Also, the Soviet persecution of everything vaguely wild card power related seems to have been forgotten. The subplot involving Stuntman's powers still doesn't go anywhere. I still have the feeling that the whole Kazakh thing was a last-minute bolt- on. As far I can remember, the car accident that started the whole thing last book is still unexplained. How the victim got from Kazakhstan to New York, I mean. It kind of feels like originally, the idea was a joker fighting ring in an upstate farm, with some videos being peddled on the side. And morphed into this world-threatening central Asian thing about halfway through the first book. The UN threat response is particularly immersion-breaking. If you can't detect a biological or chemical agent, and there are symptoms like that, procedure is not to assume there isn't one present, but that there is one you can't detect. Of all possible fictional worlds, that Wild Cards earth should demonstrate this level of carelessness and gormlessness in response to an alien infection is pretty unforgivable, and massively implausible. I mean, not only do they have regular wild card outbreaks that must look pretty similar to this, they've also had a Swarm attack, so they know there are other biological threats out there. Also, the way they don't even seem to consider that there may be a psychic or mental hazard in the areas after many incidents... Bloat kept the Rox for a long time with a mental wall. The USA even attacked through it. There must be tactical papers written on combat response through psi defended areas by now. Specific warning signs for mentally contaminated areas. The Committee, a specific UN organization for dealing with Wild Cards issues doesn't even imagine there could be a psi issue when everyone they send in come back brainburned? Come ON!To a reasonable observer, the most plausible theory should be a Takhisian test of an improved virus. Mental area keeping people out and increasing aggression, massive mutations with a much higher survival rate than the first strain spells v.i.r.u.s to most people with a grasp on history here. Also, Putin's insistence on Ace military aid seems out of character and strategically silly. One of the issues with the Committee is that Earth Witch is the only one with the powers to be relevant on an armed forces level. Finally, the "daughter gets ace fathers power" trope is played out, and the Wild Card never actually worked that way in the first place. Mistrals mother was probably an ace with the power to make that happen. Finally, there are a lot of people with PTSD afterwards, given that an Ace with the power to fix that was just introduced. In spite of all the negatives, I've listed, it is a big improvement on the last book. Not a four-star one yet, but absolutely better. The last one was a weak three-star book, this is a fairly strong one. A bit more in sych with the actual history of Wild Cards Earth would have gotten it four stars.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. High Stakes: Wild Cards: a great readBy Michael C. BurrellHigh Stakes caps the "Fort Freak" arc of three books in the Wild Cards universe. A good read, but "dark"; as I found myself asking, "Who is going to die next?" I have great hopes for the next arc, and a request; I would like to revisit Tachyon via her children. Perfect for old fans and new readers alike, High Stakes (Wild Cards) delves deeper into the world of aces, jokers, and the hard-boiled men and women of the Fort Freak police precinct in a pulpy, page-turning novel of superheroics and Lovecraftian horror by George R. R. Martin and Melinda M. Snodgrass. After the concluding events of Lowball, Officer Francis Black of Fort Freak, vigilante joker Marcus "The Infamous Black Tongue" Morgan, and ace thief Mollie "Tesseract" Steunenberg get stuck in Talas, Kazakhstan. There, the coldblooded Baba Yaga forces jokers into an illegal fighting ring, but her hidden agenda is much darker: her fighters' deaths serve to placate a vicious monster from another dimension. When the last line of defense against this world weakens, all hell breaks loose, literally....The Committee in New York sends a team of aces to investigate. One by one, each falls victim to evil forces--including the dark impulses within themselves. Only the perseverance of the most unlikely of heroes has a chance of saving the world before utter chaos erupts on Earth. Edited by #1 New York Times bestselling author George R. R. Martin, High Stakes features the writing talents of Melinda M. Snodgrass, John Jos. Miller, David Anthony Durham, Caroline Spector, Stephen Leigh, and Ian Tregillis. Now in development for TV: Rights to develop Wild Cards for TV have been acquired by Universal Cable Productions, the team that brought you The Magicians and Mr. Robot, with the co- editor of Wild Cards, Melinda Snodgrass as executive producer. ldquo; This is a wild ride of good, blood-pumping fun that packs a surprisingly emotional punch for a book that looks on the surface like just another superhero adventure.rdquo; ?
