MEDIA RELEASE SADC leaders bid farewell to the late Dr John Pombe Joseph Magufuli, the 5th President of the United Republic of Tanzania and Outgoing Chairperson of SADC 22nd March 2021, Gaborone, Botswana: Leaders of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have expressed deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences on the loss of His Excellency Dr John Pombe Magufuli, the 5th President of the United Republic of Tanzania, who died on 17th March 2021. At the State Funeral held on Monday, 22nd March 2021, in Dodoma, the United Republic of Tanzania, in honour of the late Dr Magufuli, SADC leaders expressed their deepest heartfelt condolences to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Magufuli’s widow, Mama Janet Magufuli, the Magufuli family, and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania. They also expressed continued support and solidarity with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania under the leadership of the new President, H.E Samia Suluhu Hassan. The President of the Republic of Mozambique and SADC Chairperson, His Excellency Filipe Jacinto Nyusi said that the late Dr Magufuli was an exemplary developmental result- orientation leader, and that the Region will remember and cherish Dr. Magufuli as a true Pan-Africanist who championed the development of Africa, and stood for self- determination and economic independence of the continent, and the use of the African’s resources for the benefit of its peoples. “The entire SADC is here, all of us are here at this big farewell to this great man, a great leader of our generation,” said H.E President Nyusi, adding that with the passing on of Dr Magufuli, the people of the United Republic of Tanzania, the SADC Region and Africa as a whole have lost a great, committed and inspirational leader admired across the African continent and the entire world.
