  • Black Women's Music Database
By Stephanie Y. Evans & Stephanie Shonekan Black Women’s Music Database chronicles over 600 Africana singers, songwriters, composers, and musicians from around the world. The database was created by Dr. Stephanie Evans, a professor of Black women’s studies (intellectual history) and developed in collaboration with Dr. Stephanie Shonekon, a professor of Black studies and music (ethnomusicology). Together, with support from top music scholars, the Stephanies established this project to encourage interdisciplinary research, expand creative production, facilitate community building and, most importantly, to recognize and support Black women’s creative genius. This database will be useful for music scholars and ethnomusicologists, music historians, and contemporary performers, as well as general audiences and music therapists. Music heals. The purpose of the Black Women’s Music Database research collective is to amplify voices of singers, musicians, and scholars by encouraging public appreciation, study, practice, performance, and publication, that centers Black women’s experiences, knowledge, and perspectives. This project maps leading Black women artists in multiple genres of music, including gospel, blues, classical, jazz, R & B, soul, opera, theater, rock-n-roll, disco, hip hop, salsa, Afro- beat, bossa nova, soka, and more. Study of African American music is now well established. Beginning with publications like The Music of Black Americans by Eileen Southern (1971) and African American Music by Mellonee Burnim and Portia Maultsby (2006),

west coast music Impulse SPECIAL/PROTOCOL DANCES: Please note that we will need to have your special dance requests (i.e. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have enough time to locate sheet music and an audio sample of the song. In cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. General song requests are not required, as many of our clients simply ask that the band read & react based on their guest's dance response. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs or artists they like and want played or avoided. If you wish to maintain the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested) we would ask for a minimum of 80 requests from the band’s songlist. 'LOW ROTATION' REQUESTS: General requests chosen from the 'Low Rotation' section of this songlist (pages 7-12) must be submitted at least FOUR WEEKS prior to your event. The songs from the 'Low Rotation' section are not in the current ‘IMPULSE’ song rotation, so the band would need extra preparation time. • Who's Who in A&R At
Who's Who In A&R At RCA INTRODUCTION A&R at RCA is unique in that there are actually two totally independent and autonomous A&R Departments in one: 1. The Popular Music A&R Department is headed by Warren Schatz in N.Y. in association with Neil Portnow in L.A. 2. The Nashville A&R Depart- ment is run by Jerry Bradley. These two departments operate very much as two separate companies under the RCA umbrella, so much so, that the Nashville branch is now establishing it's own pop division headed by Bradley in Nashville and Tony Brown in L.A. NASHVILLE ARTIST & REPERTOIRE *<^>*^*^<<fc*'«>-*^<^-><*fc-*<v<'^>r^^ JERRY BRADLEY: Division Vice President LYNN SIMPSON: Secretary & Assistant to Jerry Bradley In 1970 when Chet Atkins decided to leave his position as Director of A&R at RCA Nashville, he chose Jerry Bradley to succeed him. Bradley is the product of a musical family. Hisfather, Owen, at one time worked at Decca Records^nd has produced a number of famous country artists over the years while Jerry's uncle, Harold, is one of the more well-known studio guitarists in Nashville. Meanwhile, Jerry had worked as manager of a music publishing company, a music-oriented realty company, and Bradley's Barn, a large and still very active independent recording studio complex. Bradley apprenticed, under the aegis of Chet Atkins, for four years at RCA before moving into the top position in the fall of 1974. Today his responsibilities include: 1. Signing new artists and guiding their careers.
