Mohamed Yacoob PRINCIPAL Place : Wandiwash Date : 28.10.2015 Self Study Report : Sri Akilandeswari Women’s College, Wandiwash 6 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Sri Akilandeswari Women’s College, Wandiwash adhere to the wishes and vision of Pujyasri Swamiji Abedhanandha Saraswathi for uplifting the poverty, ignorant and innocent rural women folk. Swamy Abedhanandha Educational Trust laid its footprints about 20 years back with challenging experiences and progresses. STRENGTH: The support of the management and that of the staff has made the Institution to achieve a awesome reputation in the educational field. The management, staff and students stand as the strong pillars for the upliftment of the college. The latest methods of new teaching technology and the support given by the management to implement the same has helped the institution to achieve its goal. Initially in 1995 the college started with three job oriented undergraduate courses and today the Institution is catering 10 UG courses, 9 PG courses and 4 M.Phil courses. Every year the management takes each and every step to satisfy the needs of the students and that of the public by means of starting new professional courses which has job securities for women folk. Accordingly the infrastructural facilities such as required class rooms, laboratories, furniture, etc. are increased so as to satisfy the needs. With regard to admission, the strength has been increasing so as to prove that this Institution has made the people to realize the importance of education. The implementation of new technologies in teaching methods, automation of library and other library sources, attention given by the staff, etc. has contributed much to the development of the Institution. This, in turn has made students to achieve awards, ranks and medals from the University. These laurels has created an opportunity for campus interviews and many of the companies has visited the college to recruit various candidates for various jobs and today many the students are placed in well-said positions. Appreciation from the recruiters, personalities who have visited the college for various reasons and public is a strong evidence that the students of this college are well trained in ultramodern facilities provided by the college. Various development programmes are organised for all the students under various topics so as to motivate the students to achieve laurels and reputation. The participation of students in extension activities through various clubs is yet another strength for the progress of the Institution. Social service activities to the society has created a great impact on the development of the college. The alumni association on its part as motivated the management and the students to aim for higher laurels. The link between the management and the staff, the principal and staff, the staff and the students, the management and the public, etc. has created a strong bond in the development of the college. Self Study Report : Sri Akilandeswari Women’s College, Wandiwash 7 WEAKNESS: Being a rural area, most of the students undergo school studies in their mother-tongue language and hence English knowledge cannot be expected from them as they enter into the college life. It is the main drawback that the faculty find much difficulties in training the students to face the current scenario. And the same is also felt in case of promoting consultancy. In spite of placing advertisements in dailies for recruiting staff every year, the management receives minimum number of resumes who have completed Ph.D or NET/SET qualified candidates. Hence this has become major constraint in appointing qualified staff. OPPORTUNITIES The management has created various opportunities to students at various levels. Academically, library facilities, internet facilities, technological updates in teaching-learning methodologies, laboratory facilities, industrial visits, invited lectures, workshops, etc. Apart from these, the students are motivated both mentally and physically by organizing personality development classes, counselling, conducting yoga classes and sports. They are permitted to participate in various extra-curricular activities at college and inter-collegiate levels.Various clubs are functioning for the betterment of the students which enhances the social responsibilities. The staff –members are also taken care in improving themselves in their academic achievement by means of creating opportunities to participate in various conferences, seminars and workshops conducted in various institutions and universities. Orientation programmes are organized by the management so as to enable the staff to enhance their teaching skills. As the institution has been granted with 12(B) status, the staffs are motivated to undergo projects at UGC level with financial aid. In order to satisfy the norms of the UGC, the staff members are encouraged to appear for CSIR/NET/UGC exams and provisions of all sorts to get through in the same is done by the management. The status of achieving 12(B) under the UGC Act has motivated the management to uplift the college in all aspects in forthcoming years. CHALLENGES: The management has to face many socio-economic problems to run the institution and to achieve its vision. • Uring 1950S When the Country Began Setting up Its Infrastructure, Over 500 Colleges Affiliated to Nearly 20 Universities
uring 1950s when the country began setting up its infrastructure, over 500 colleges affiliated to nearly 20 universities. The country had only one-lakh students who were continuing their studies after school. We are now living in a different era, where a certificate has become an inevitable asset to sustain ourselves in this competitive world. Between 1950 and 2015, the number of universities in the country had increased to 723 with around 37,000 colleges. At present, the country has more than 2.6 crore students pursuing higher education. However, according to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, India, the unemployment rate of the country currently stands at 5.20 which roughly translate to 44.79 million unemployed people who are actively looking for jobs. Thus, it is evident that in the process of mass admission of students, many institutes are not keen on producing individuals who are employable according to the industry standards. While, the government manages only 27 percent of existing colleges, the majority of our higher education institutions are in the private sector and engineering colleges have a considerable contribution to this. We at Higher Education Review understand that the abundance of engineering institutes in the country is creating a complicated picture for students, as it is a difficult task for them to choose the right campus. With many experts on the panel, we have a better understanding of best engineering institutes in the country that are providing out of the box facilities to the students, even though it is a tough job to understand the key strength of engineering institutes when they are performing well in the major areas.
