April 6,1990 • The Concordian • 3 April 6,1990 EDITORIAL 4 Task Force offers positive solution

Last weekend, the Task Force on Student Life Space deliv- ered its final report and proposal on a long-debated issue: the establishment of indoor space on campus allocated specifically for the purpose of student recreation. This report represented the culmination of several months of study, the polling of 100 students, and the generation of several preliminary options. The task force was composed of three students, three administrators and one faculty member. Concordia has been in need of this space for many years. With increasing enrollment and expansion of programs and activities at the college, the crunch has been felt by virtually everyone to have a pleasant, quiet retreat during the evening hours. Knutson Center itself is an ill-designed conglomeration of lit- tle, scarcely-usable spaces, the result perhaps of falsely extrava- gant visions on the part of those who planned its uses. With a concert hall and a chapel doing double duty, and office space, retail space, a post office and a dining service all sharing a build- ing of such modest dimensions, it is easy to understand that "stu- dent life space" — i.e. a place for students to congregate or to attend informal social functions — was one of the first "luxu- ries" to be squeezed out of the agenda. But, regardless of blame or short-sightedness on any group's part, the time has come for this measure to be rectified. It was indeed heartening to see a task force assembled to deal with this issue, and the results of their brainstorming and inquiries pro- vide positive solutions. The task force seems to favor a proposal which would remod- el the two largest seating rooms in the dining service at Knutson in such a way that the front room would be open and usable by Letters students during the evenings. This room would feature two par- quet dance floors and nightly entertainment — presumably live on special occasions, and otherwise played off a sound system Wetlands provide many benefits to society provided by KORD.
