Changes in Canberra are Underway BUT Can We Have a Solution for South Road Please! The recently elected Liberal National Coalition Commonwealth Govern- ment has hit the ground running with new Prime Minister quickly announcing his Ministry, with few surprises (apart from the general lack of women in the Cabinet Room) - See Page 3 of this News- letter for details of the full Ministry. Key SAFC Contacts As expected, Leader of the National Party (since December 2007) and Executive Committee Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss was installed as Minister for Infra- structure and Regional Development with Jamie Briggs appointed Assis- tant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development. Tony Grant Chairman 0412 843 892 Curiously, the word “Transport” does not appear in any Ministerial title Geoff Rose Vice- Chairman 0416 123 983 but the industry has been reassured that this does not mean that the Brad McArdle 0467 002 027 portfolio has been downgraded - the Coalition Government has merely Peter Taylor 0410 315 580 moved to “simplify” Departmental titles and Ministries administratively. Chris Griffiths 08 8307 5700 And the new Government isn’t wasting any time in implementing their Andrew Pellizzari 08 8447 0685 election policies. Of significance to the transport and logistics sector is Jonathan Wilson 0408 118 684 that Customs and border protection will now report to the immigration Peter Hollister 08 8303 0981 minister , instead of the attorney-general. Also the Cli- mate Commission has been abolished and work has begun to scrap the Climate Change Authority (CCA).

Convenors The Minister for Infrastructure Warren Truss has also been quoted as saying he would streamline the system for applying for temporary li- Sustainable Supply Chains Stephanie Bolt 08 8308 9216 cences to use foreign-flag ships, which he described as having become "very difficult and restrictive" under Labor's coastal shipping reforms. Skills & Careers Paul Carroll 08 8343 7653 Infrastructure & Regulations Steve Shearer 08 8445 8177 Most significantly, during the election campaign Mr Abbott himself (Joint Convenors) Ian Maitland 08 8235 3060 stated that he wanted to be known as the 'Infrastructure Prime Minister' Transport Service User Group Daryl Gray 0439 878 471 so we can expect some focus upon transport infrastructure issues from the new Government. Secretariat Perhaps we can start with a fix for the South Road Corridor - end to end - Noarlunga to Gawler. Chief Executive Neil Murphy 08 8447 0688 At the moment we have a political bun fight being played out in the Officer 0427 089 240 South Australian media over which part of South Rd to fix first - Dar- lington or Torrens to Torrens are the choices being discussed. Senior Project Lee Atkinson-Barrett 08 8447 0664 Adviser 0403 910 698 The State Labour Government wants to push on with the Torrens to Torrens project which is supported by the freight industry as we have clearly articulated a preference for a fix to the section of the corridor that Project Officer Michael McCarthy 08 8447 0635 runs between the Gallipoli Underpass and the new Superway under 0449 879 619 construction at the northern end of South Rd.

The new Commonwealth Coalition Government wants to deliver on its SAFC Contact Details election promise to upgrade Darlington (the Sturt Rd and Flinders Drive intersections as well as the connection with the Southern Expressway South Australian Freight Council Inc currently being duplicated). C/- Flinders Ports Limited Why can’t we have both? 296 St Vincent Street PORT ADELAIDE SA 5015 Even better, why can’t we see a plan for the whole corridor - Gawl- er to Noarlunga and see a plan to fund the necessary upgrades. Telephone 08 8447 0635 To date SA has been promised a paltry amount of the allocations made Facsimile 08 8447 0606 from the Building Australia Fund Mark 2. This is a $24b plus fund Email: [email protected] which aims to fund projects of national significance. South Rd qualifies as nationally significant (if we believe SA is still part of the nation).

A full upgrade to South Road is estimated to cost somewhere between The South Australian Freight Council Inc is $6billion and $7billion, a big ask that will strain State resources BUT if proudly supported by both Federal and State the upgrade is scheduled over a 10 year timeframe it should surely be Governments. able to be accommodated.

There will no doubt be much discussion and political point scoring in the coming days, weeks and months in the lead up to the State election in March next year

Hold onto your hats - there are likely to be more changes and debates to come as the new Government implements its policy agenda.

… but then again, this should come as no surprise given that Thomas Cooper started out in 1862 to create an all-natural beer from the very best ingredients And his legacy lives on through the 5th and 6th generation of the Cooper’s family.

Water for the production of the beer is drawn from underground aquifers (making it easier to control quality) and the company has engineered the process over time and brew beer to world best practice standards in water usage, for every one litre of beer brewed 5 litres of water is used. Additional measures include:-  The spent grain is stored and shipped for animal feed  Origin energy gas fired tri-generation plant on site that produces the electricity, heat and cooling used in the brewing process  Recycling glass and materials used on site
