APRIL 3, 2013 SILVERADO SOCRATES | 2013 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE CROSS-COUNTRY AND TRACK STAND OUT, Silverado Socrates, formerly Brenda Shackleton, is arguably one of the most accomplished runners to have raced under the Vikes name. Under the tutelage of head coach Ron Bowker, Silverado second time, earned All-Canadian status. Socrates, formerly Brenda Shackleton, competed from 1985-1988 for the UVic cross-country and track program. DEREK ELLIS was the first coach of the Vikes running program from its official inception in 1964 until 1973. Dr. Ellis was originally at UVic teaching as an associate professor in the biology department. Ellis played a pivotal role in the initiation of a men’s cross- national cross-country championship hosted by UVic for the country and track program, coaching it for nearly 10 seasons first time in 1973. and encouraging the university’s support of the program. In addition to his coaching, Ellis was training and competing Ellis, originally from England, started running cross-country at the age of 14. Prior to her successful international career, Wright competed for the Vikes from 1992-96 under long-time Vikes head coach Ian Bridge.
