Muskegon Community College 2012 ~ 2013 Men’s Baseball Head Coach

HEAD COACH - CAP POHLMAN The 2012-2013 season will be Coach Pohlman’s15th year as head coach of the Muskgon Community College Jayhawks. He owns a record of 441 & 278. His 2007- 2008 Jayhawk squad won the school’s first Conference Championship and the 2009-2010 squad broke 21 school records including a record 44 wins. He was born and raised in Saginaw Michigan. Pohlman threw 7 no hitters at Saginaw Douglas MacArthur High School. He then moved on to Central Michigan University; his career there was highlighted by defeating South Carolina on a no-hitter and in the Regional and defeating Big Ten Champion Iowa on a 3-hitter. He was drafted in the 9th round by the Milwaukee Brewers and spent two years in the minors before his career ended because of an arm injury. Coach Pohlman spent one season as a volunteer coach at CMU before becoming the head coach at Chesaning High School. His teams won seven conference championships. His best team was 32 & 7 and they set many state records. He left Chesaning to become the assistant baseball coach at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. His primary responsibility there was working with the pitchers. Starting with an 8 man pitching staff Coach Pohlman built a pitching staff of 24 pitchers after 4 years. Four of his pitchers were drafted, including Scott Sauerbeck and Dave Swartzbaugh. In 2011 Garrett Bolt, who pitched for Pohlman at MCC, was drafted by the LA Dodgers.

Coach Pohlman spent 12 years at Fruitport High School before retiring. He spent 4 years as Varsity Baseball Coach. Three of those teams were conference champs. His high school record over 18 years was 351 wins and 145 losses. In 2002 Coach Pohlman was elected to the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 2009 he was selected to the CMU Hall of Fame as part of the 1971 National Runner-ups. His resume also includes coaching football, basketball and he was also an athletic director. He has spoken at many clinics and camps. He is supported by his wife of 38 years, Deb, a retired teacher. He has 2 children; his daughter Karli is a teacher at Muskegon Public Schools and she is married to Jason Baldus, who works at the Newaygo Intermediate School District. His son Carey is married to Cara and they are both teachers in Gastonia, North Carolina. He is also the proud grandpa of Karina and Jackson Baldus. Coach’s Comments: This year’s team is much more balanced with the right mix of sophomores and freshman. Last year’s experiences we hope will translate to more success on the field. We had several losses in the pitching staff and feel at the top of our rotation and our bullpen will be stellar. We need the freshman pitchers to adjust quickly. Defensively we expect to be strong. Offensively we are looking for more stolen bases and run production. It will be a disappointment to the coaching staff and these sophomores if we don’t compete for the league and Regionals. He would like to thank his family and friends for all their support and dedication throughout the years. Coach’s Comments: Josh is a pure hitter that we think will be a great catcher next year or perhaps this year. He also will play some 3rd base and is a potential DH as well. He could be one of the best hitters ever at MCC ever before he leaves here! Muskegon Community College 2012 ~ 2013 Men’s Baseball Team

# Name Pos B/T Ht Wt Yr Hometown High School 35 Brody Anderson P R 6’3” 175 Fr Grand Haven/Grand Haven H S Brody is the son of Edward and Diane Anderson. He is following in the footsteps of his older brother Jordan that also attended Muskegon Community College while playing baseball. Brody attended Grand Haven High School where he played 4 years of baseball. His last 2 years in high school, the team won districts. He is 6’2” and 175 pounds and throws right handed. He likes to go hunting and fishing in his free time. The majors that he is pursuing are Hydrology and Wildlife Management. He would like to thank his family and friends for the support over the years. Coach’s Comments: Brody walked-on and will be a role player out of the bullpen until he adjusts to the speed of the game. He is a hard worker that will help us soon.

# Name Pos B/T Ht Wt Yr Hometown High School 36 Brad Keller P L 6’1” 200 Fr Traverse City/Central H S Brad is the son of Craig and Jane Keller. He is a left handed pitcher from Traverse City Central who played three years on the varsity. Brad was a two-sport athlete who received Honorable Mention in both baseball and football. He has plans on becoming a Special Education Teacher and playing baseball as long as he can. Brad would like to thank his family for everything in life and leading him in the right direction. Coach’s Comments: Brad is a raw talent who needs to harness his energy into a positive force. He is one of the hardest workers on the team but like many freshman there are self-doubts about where they fit in on this team. He could spot start or help us out of the bullpen. As soon as he grasps the mental game he will be awesome!

# Name Pos B/T Ht Wt Yr Hometown High School 39 Brian Barnes C R/R 5’11” 195 So Comstock Park/Comstock Park H S Brian is a 2011 graduate of Comstock Park High School. He carries a 3.51 G.P.A. and will be pursuing a degree in Computer Science after MCC. Brian’s goal is also to play baseball at a four year institution. His parents are John and Julie Barnes. Coach’s Comments: Brian will share catching duties at the beginning of the year. He handles pitchers well but must learn to be more vocal. He understands the game as well as some of the best catchers we have had in the past. He has to harness his ability and put it on the field. Expect a big year from Brian!
