KURA is a State Corporation under the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development mandated to manage, develop, rehabilitate and maintain all national urban trunk roads. 4 INTRODUCTION

Mission To professionally provide quality, safe and adequate urban road network that satisfies stakeholder needs 5 URBAN TRANSPORT SITUATION IN NAIROBI  Since inception 7 years ago KURA has been able to upgrade, construct and maintain over 12,000km of roads in the country most of them in Nairobi City County.

 Nairobi population is over 4m and the day’s population is about 7m (Includes people from the nearby towns e.g , , )

 This leads to: - 1. Heavy traffic flows during peak hours 2. Traffic management demands outstripping the resources 3. Inadequate infrastructure facilities MEASURES BEING TAKEN BY KURA TO ADDRESS 6 TRAFFIC CONGESTION IN NAIROBI  Nairobi Urban Transport Master Plan 2006 and the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Plan’ (NIUPLAN), 2014 were developed through funding from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)  KURA is implementing the road infrastructure components of these Plans  Some of the completed projects under these master plans include: 1. Dualling of Langata Road from Wildlife Service to Bomas of Kenya 2. Improvement of Eastleigh Roads Phase 1 3. Improvement of Upperhill Roads Phase 1 4. Construction of Northern Bypass 5.
