Merseyside Record Office GB 1072 M347 LIV Merseyside Record Office This catalogue was digitised by The National Archives as part of the National Register of Archives digitisation project NRA 44155 The National Archives Merseyside Record Office M347 LIV: LIVERPOOL COUNTY PETTY SESSIONAL DIVISION Accession Number 2003/12 Description Court registers and Juvenile Court registers Covering dates 1955-1974 Extent 56 volumes Administrative history Before 1974, petty sessions courts (also known as magistrates courts) were of two types: 1. county petty sessions, each operating within a petty sessional division of the county 2. borough petty sessions In April 1974 they were reorganised and the distinction between borough and county was in effect abolished. Petty sessional divisions now covered the whole county, each division with its own court, which was now normally referred to as a magistrates court. Liverpool County Petty Sessional Division met at County Sessions House, Islington. The following places were included in the Petty Sessional Division: Aintree, Blundellsands, Great Crosby, Little Crosby, Hightown, Ince Blundell, Kirkby, Litherland, Lunt, Netherton, Ford, Seaforth, Thornton and Waterloo The Liverpool County Petty Sessional Division was formed in 1955, but its pre-deccessor was Kirkdale Petty Sessional Division which appeared to cover the same area. Custodial history Transferred by Eileen Hume from Kirkby Library in November 2003. Related Material The records of the Kirkdale Petty Sessional Division are held by Lancashire Record Office (ref: PSK). The records of Liverpool City Magistrates Court are held by Liverpool Record Office (ref: 347 MAG). Access Conditions These records are deposits under section 4 of the Public Records Act 1958. The Public Records Act 1967 requires them to be closed for a minimum of thirty years.     1 St Faith`s Church, Great Crosby Confirmation Registers 1901 – 2000 There are two volumes covering the church`s first century, volume 1 covering the period 1901 to 1958 and volume 2 the period 1959 to 2000; volume 2 is not yet full. The registers have entries for a particular confirmation event detailing the names, ages and addresses of those being confirmed (the addresses are not always included for the most recent confirmation candidates). The location of the confirmation service, its date and the Bishop confirming the candidates are given. A number of early male candidates for confirmation came from Merchant Taylors` School which then took boarding pupils. The first volume, for some individuals, mentions when they moved from the district, joined the forces or joined the merchant navy. During the first decade some adults were confirmed privately at the Bishop`s Palace in Liverpool. Services for adults were often held during the latter part of the year and the main confirmation service during March or April. Candidates before WWII would often travel some distance for a confirmation service, in some cases as far as Wigan, Warrington and Rock Ferry. Although most confirmations were conducted by the Bishop of Liverpool or the Bishop of Warrington there have been times when other bishops have conducted the confirmations. Most notable was Lord Runcie of Cuddesdon but in March 1945 the Bishop of the Argentine presided. An interesting feature of the period up to about 1930 is the number of parents who were confirmed shortly before their children were confirmed. In these transcripts some early confirmations are show as having taken place at the Cathedral.

It's also a good idea to include some food and drink in a small day-pack, as although re-fuelling stops are suggested on the listed routes, there is no guarantee that they will be open when you need them.
