Dean Mendes, who boasts 12 years of collegiate coaching experience, is in his first season as an assistant coach for the California women’s basketball team. Mendes’ arrival at Cal comes on the heels of his two seasons as an assistant coach at Vermont, under women’s head coach Sharon Dawley. He was the recruiting coordinator for the Catamounts and assisted with all aspects of the program. Prior to his time at Vermont, Mendes (pronounced men-DEEZ) served as an administrative assistant for the Boston College women’s basketball program during the 2002-03 campaign. The Eagles advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 that season. Mendes, who hails from Easton, Mass., served four years as assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Brown before his stint at Boston College. In addition, Mendes developed his coaching skills as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Assumption College (1994-96) and at Worcester State College (1996-98). He earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in communications from Fordham in 1982.
