Nelson4 RESUMEN Los denominados oasis de neblina son áreas en las zonas costeras del Desierto de Ataca- ma donde el ingreso habitual de niebla permite el establecimiento y desarrollo de diver- sas poblaciones de plantas vasculares, generando verdaderos hotspots de diversidad. En estas áreas, la biota liquenológica ha sido poco explorada y representa uno de los ele- mentos perennes más importantes que conforman la comunidad. En un estudio previo de la biota del oasis de neblina de Alto Patache se reportaron siete especies. Con el fin de mejorar este conocimiento, se analizó la riqueza de especies presentes en el oasis si- guiendo dos transectos altitudinales en diferentes orientaciones del farellón. Aquí repor- tamos preliminarmente 77 especies de líquenes para el oasis de neblina de Alto Patache. De estas, 61 especies corresponden a nuevos registros para la región de Tarapacá, en tanto que las especies Amandinea eff lorescens, Diploicia canescens, Myriospora smarag- dula y Rhizocarpon simillimum corresponden a nuevos registros para el país. Asimismo, se destaca a Alto Patache como la única localidad conocida para Santessonia cervicornis, una especie endémica y en Peligro Crítico. ABSTRACT Fog oases are zones along the Atacama Desert where the regular input of fog favors the development of rich communities of vascular plants, becoming biodiversity hotspots. HODKINSON ABSTRACT. – A taxonomic scheme for lichens and allied fungi that synthesizes scientific knowledge from a variety of sources is presented. The system put forth here is intended both (1) to provide a skeletal outline of the lichens and allied fungi that can be used as a provisional filing and databasing scheme by lichen herbarium/data managers and (2) to announce the online presence of an official taxonomy that will define the scope of the newly formed International Committee for the Nomenclature of Lichens and Allied Fungi (ICNLAF). The online version of the taxonomy presented here will continue to evolve along with our understanding of the organisms. Additionally, the subfamily Fissurinoideae Rivas Plata, Lücking and Lumbsch is elevated to the rank of family as Fissurinaceae. Most of the species contain pulvinic acid derivates or rarely usnic acid as the main secondary metabolites with additional substances, e.g. gyrophoric acid, diffractaic acid or terpenoids (Laundon 1981, Thor 1988, Tønsberg 1994, Kalb 2001, Elix & Kantvilas 2007, Harris & Ladd 2008, Ertz & Tehler 2010, Lendemer & Elix 2010).     Marsland Press The Journal of American Science 2009: 5(4):107-112 Assessment of Lichen Species in a Temperate Region of Garhwal Himalaya, India Balwant Kumar Department of Botany, Kumaun University, Nainital- 263002 (Uttarakhand), India [email protected] ABSTRACT: An enumeration of 106 lichen species belonging to 47 genera and 28 families from Baniyakund-Chopta areas of Garhwal is provided. The area is dominated by macrolichens (foliose to fruticose form). The area exhibit the luxuriant growth of corticolous lichens represented by the occurrence of 64% of corticolous (bark inhabiting) lichens followed by 30% of saxicolous (rock inhabiting) and 4% of terricolous (soil inhabiting) lichens. A single species growing on leaves (foliicolous) is also recorded from the area. If we compare the lichen diversity of the study area vis-à-vis other regions, it is about 30% of the Garhwal Himalayas, 20% of the Uttarakhand and 10% of the Himalayas and less than 0.5% of Indian lichen diversity. In fact, lichens are fungi that form a close relationship with algae or cyanobacteria, and this association, called symbiosis, is so tight that they look like one organism. The fungus provides structural support, while the algae provide food. This unique symbiosis allows these fungi to act as plants in an ecosystem and for a long time they were considered plants by scientists. Lichens occur on all continents, covering nearly seven percent of the Earth’s surface, and can be dominant in extreme climates, such as deserts and near the poles of Earth. Today there are about 20,000 described species of lichenized fungi, nearly one-third of the fungi, but scientists estimate that thousands more await discovery. Chicagoland has a long history of lichen study. Over a century ago, William Wirt Calkins published the lichen flora of “Chicago and vicinity” containing 125 lichen species. A little over 20 years ago, Gerould S. Wilhelm, reassessed the lichen flora and reported 222 species. Some of the species Calkins reported in 1896 were no longer found, and other species seemed to have migrated recently to Chicagoland, demonstrating the dynamic nature of lichen species diversity across landscapes and time.
