Absence of physical barriers on the coast and presence of vital industrial and defence installations near the coast also enhance the vulnerability of the coasts to illegal cross-border activities. In addition, the Indian Ocean Region is of strategic importance to India’s security. A substantial part of India’s external trade and energy supplies pass through this region. The security of India’s island territories, in particular, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, remains an important priority. Drug trafficking, sea-piracy and other clandestine activities such as gun running are emerging as new challenges to security management in the Indian Ocean region. FICCI believes that industry has the technological capability to implement border management solutions. The government could consider exploring integrated solutions provided by industry for strengthening coastal security of the country. The FICCI-PwC report on ‘Smart border management: Indian coastal and maritime security’ highlights the initiatives being taken by the Central and state governments to strengthen coastal security measures in the country.

With the tagline "US in UP", 26 major American companies will interact with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adtiyanath to explore investment opportunities in the state. "Headed by Boeing, 26 US firms are on their way to Uttar Pradesh to explore investment avenues in the state. The tagline is 'US in UP' on the lines of 'Vibrant Gujarat'," senior cabinet minister Siddharth Nath Singh told. The delegation will visit the state under the aegis of US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), Singh, who is UP Health Minister, said. The USISPF is committed to creating the most powerful strategic partnership between the US and India and promoting bilateral trade is an important task, the Forum said. "But, our mission reaches far beyond this. It is about business and government coming together in new ways to create meaningful opportunities that have the power to change the lives of citizens," the USISPF said. It said in a statement that investment incentives offered by the state under the new chief minister "translate into a business- friendly climate for industry." Singh said taking a cue from 'Vibrant Gujarat', the idea of 'US in UP' has been mooted to showcase the state's investment avenues in chemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, cement, gems, textiles and engineering sectors. He said a small delegation had visited this state two months back and realising the "tremendous investment potential" in the state, a bigger delegation will be travelling to the state tomorrow.

Extemal assistance today plays a supportive role in financing major infrastructure projects, social sector projects and in building up institutional capacity. Presently, external development assistance from bilateral and multilateral sources is received by the Govemment of India (i) for projects/programmes in the Central sector; (ii) for projects executed by Central Public Sector Undertakings; and (iii) on behalf of the State Governments for State sector projects/programmes to be implemented by the State Governments and/or local bodies and public sector undertakings. The existing guidelines do not allow direct borrowings by the State Government entities from external agencies. 2. Several State agencies are implementing major infrastructure projects of national importance. These projects, even if viable and sound, have huge funding requirements and borrowing by the State Govemments for such projects may result in utilization of significant portion of their borrowing space.
