RANES TWELVE

We all know that there is a huge choice out there for all type of DJ’s but this new release from Rane is a tad perplexing. First off, it is a controller, with a 12” vinyl record on top that acts as the platter. In all fairness it looks the business, but if you cast your mind back to Technics failed attempt at such a piece of kit and for the old heads the Numark before it will know that these ideas were short lived. I can see what Rane are getting at but there are much better examples of this. Sure, the price tag of around AED3,400 will be attractive to some, but we recommend either going full vinyl (with Traktor, Serato or wax) or sticking to controllers or CDJ’s. This is no man’s land in our opinion.

DJ RENA DMC For the turntablists out there you will be aware that the annual World DMC Championships took place a few weeks ago in London and there was a bit of a surprise winner. Surprise in the fact that the winner DJ Rena is only 12 years old and so beats A-Trak’s long standing record. The Japanese DJ is still far too young to be able to perform in most clubs but once that happens we are sure he will be unstoppable. Look at what A-Trak has gone on to achieve since winning the World DMC title. WE LOVE SQUARE NIGHTCLUB Being the tallest hotel in the world comes with a great responsibility to deliver a high standard of quality that other hotels strive to achieve and the JW Marriot Marquis Hotel that towers high above Business Bay and the surrounding Dubai Water Canal offers that in spades with its market leading outlets. With firm favourites Bridgewater Tavern, Tong Thai, Prime68 and Garden all tantalising taste buds on a regular basis there is a new venue on the block ready to rock your weekends. Taking its ques from the London Underground, the industrial styled Square Nightclub has ensured all surfaces have been used to their fullest potential and display works of art from local artists as well as renditions of famous works from UK guerrilla artist Banksy. The heady program of events has also been a huge hit, with Juicy on Fridays being a tour de force through house, UK garage, r and b and of course hip hop. Residents Robbie Blanco and Salv Pepp will have you dancing the whole night long. Also in attendance throughout the week is Escape with Mr Levier on Tuesdays, Link Up on Wednesdays with DJ Brooklyn and Shero, then Thursdays belong to Strictly Urban with Luwayne Wonder. So, don’t be a square and check out what all the fuss is all about. For more information go to facebook.com/squaredxb.

What we did GROOVE ON THE GRASS SEASON OPENER

Another season, another sweatbox and another stellar line-up to kick everything off into the desert’s own homegrown festival, sprawling over Emirates Golf Club’s grassy pits and knolls. Deian’s set shortly after dark summed it up with a bumpy, understated vibe leading into the likes of the stalwart chillario Nightmares on Wax inside the tent. His set a far cry from the herbal heights of Les Nuits and DJ Kicks mixes, choosing to build the yearning crowd into a frenzied rave-up having it large to his brand of tech-house vibes ahead of DJ Tennnis’ tremulous touchdown while headliner Nicholas Jaar outside dropped a leftfield mix in the style of a Boiler Room jaunt, sprawling through glitchy technophoria by way of some deep and techy vibes thrown in for good measure, all underscored with the Latin roots of his Chilean heritage. As the weather pulls into that long, deeply refreshing drink of the lush months we all live here for, while the rest of the world starts to slowly freeze, there’s just a hint in the air - as there has been at all the Groove events, despite the cliquey and self-important atmosphere so many of the ‘beautiful people’ exude in this city - of a slither of the original vibe that we all started clubbing for in the first place, to be found somewhere hidden over the green. DECIBEL 2ND BIRTHDAY W/ GREGOR TRESHER

Gregor Tresher is an artist who puts emphasis on stimulating the whole body and not just people’s feet when he is playing his sound. With a focus on melody, Gregor is able to provide an organic sound within a shifting environment. With residents Toubba and Krucho playing back to back at the beginning of the evening, they warmed up the crowd with a solid and steady set which provided the musical basis for the evening that was to unfold. One of the great things about Decibel and their music policy is that there are guaranteed bangers that are going to be played from start to finish. The low roof of ON42 and the cleaver back drop / stage visuals provide an added atmosphere reminding the crowd of a night in a European club with its in your face lights and great sounding sound system the Decibel crew have got the right blend of music / visuals and atmosphere in a great package. Well done to the Decibel crew, happy birthday and here is to many more. Words by Pablo Walker For more information go to facebook.com/decibeldxb. ON N ON LAUNCH There is a huge choice of beach and pool venues in Dubai, but they seldom cater for music tastes that do not confirm to the mainstream. Step forward the ON N ON pool parties lovingly curated by Andrei Hancu, Sasha Antropov (SASH.) and Mattia Stragapede (Maat). Taking place at the pool deck of The Intercontinental Hotel, Dubai Marina every Saturday, ON N ON was just the cure for a heavy Friday night where you could float about a temperature controller pooled while listening to some of Dubai’s best DJ’s. First up was Maat to warm the poolside Funktion One’s with a top selection of blissed out numbers and it seemed Dauwd’s remix of Lusine’s “Chatter” purely designed to played in the open air. Next came the extended set from guest Maks (Artist Network), known for his eclectic tastes he was firmly in deep, melodic minimal mood and carried the party expertly until Sash. took over the decks with an equally spot on selection including tracks like the sublime Sade sampling Quasar- “I Never Thought I’d See The Day”. I can see this being a firm favourite hangout for a lot of people as the vibe together with the surroundings are perfect. Words by Stu Todd For more information go to facebook.com/onnondxb. Kicking off Beyond the Track by Alchemy Project during race weekend on Friday, November 24 is none other than Dutch superstar DJ Martin Garrix… Dutch EDM superstar Martin Garrix has had somewhat of an overnight celestial rise to the top and with the perfect timing of the EDM boom this young artist capitalised on his success. After being spellbound by Tiesto performing at the Greece Olympic Games in 2004 this inspired young Martijn to begin DJing producing himself. By 2012 at the tender age of 16, Martijn was signed to Dutch label Spinnin’ Records and laid waste to his peers with the chart smash “Animals” that followed in 2013. His breakthrough track hit the top spot in commercial charts all across Europe and paved the way for Martijn to debut in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ’s at a respectable number 40. The following years saw Martin’s stock rise considerably and with him leaving Spinnin’ Records in 2015 this allowed him to set up his own label STMPD RCRDS the next year. This would prove to be the artists defining moment as his saw his popularity climbed to new heights as the young Dutchman scooped number one in the DJ Mag Top 100 chart. This saw the young Dutchman leapfrog Hardwell and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike who were number 2 and 1 respectively. The label is now home to a range of artists including , , LOOPERS and of course it is an outlet for his own productions such as his newly released single “Pizza”. Although Martin is still the youngest star on the EDM circuit, he can kill it with the best of them, so expect actual fireworks when he headlines the first day of Beyond the Track on Friday, November 24.

Hip hop hall of famer Jazzy Jeff was adapting brand new types of scratch before some of us were even out of primary school, so you can bet your bottom dollar he is going to rock the Barasti mainstage to its sandy core on Friday, October 27… The name Jazzy Jeff to some may conjure up images of somebody that tends to get thrown out of his best friend The Fresh Prince’s house quite a lot, but to others Jazz is one of the most important turntablists to ever put 2 records together. Known for his inventive scratch routines and his early adaptation of sampling in his productions. For examples of this ground-breaking technique check out his famous track with Will Smith “The Magnificant Jazzy Jeff” from 1987 where he samples James Brown’s “Funky Drummer” at the end of his routine. Jazz is also widely credited with creating the Transform Scratch, the man himself had this to say on the famous scratch, “I don’t like to take credit for that. Grandwizard Theodore invented scratch, and everything we’re doing is a take-off of what he started. The first person I heard do the transformer scratch was a DJ in Philly named DJ Spinbad. What I did was take his concept and flip it”. You can catch Jazzy Jeff flipping this and much, much, much more when he headlines Barasti Beach Club on Friday, October 27. For more information go to facebook.com/barastibeach. ON THE RECORD One Records and Illusion Recordings artist Seelie has upped sticks from Manchester and headed East to the emerging scenes of Thailand, but on a rare trip to the UK, Dubai based house party heads Move have locked in the UK artist for a headline slot. Infusion Magazine caught up with Seelie to find out more… You have been based in Thailand for some time. What prompted the move to Thailand in the first place? I made the move 2 years ago, there is only so much Manchester rain you can take haha. Oh, and the food. What is the club scene like there? There is a purity to the scene out here. People get down if it’s good irrespective of music played by certain artists or a specific sub-genre. This has given me scope to play a wider range of music, whether its Detroit techno or Nigerian funk, people get down if they feel it. What can we expect from you release wise in the near future? I’m currently working on another remix for Love Dose Recordings. and hoping to release music on my own label in 2018. You will be turning out for Move at the end of this month, what can we expect from your set? I’ll be bringing a lot of vinyl (fingers crossed there is no luggage problems) expect house and techno for the ass. Do you have any pre-conceived ideas about the scene here in Dubai? I guess when you think of Dubai you think of VIP booth clubbing, but I’ve already heard great things about the party from Adam Shelton. Move sounds like the antidote to those preconceived ideas, so I can’t wait.

ITS GETTING HAWTIN HERE British born, Canadian raised techno icon Richie Hawtin is an artist that has always attracted attention whenever he is in control of the music and he is going to turn the heat up on Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE even further on Friday, October 20… To some Richie Hawtin is the king of the decks, to others he is one of the most respected producers of his time, while others regard him as the envisioned label head in techno. Richie Hawtin is all this and more. Across his illustrious career he has been the center point for the most seminal turning points in electronic music. His work as Plastikman in the 90’s would cement his arrival as the seminal second wave of Detroit techno artists that would continue to shape the Motor City as the spiritual home of techno. Richie has also played a massive part in the continued evolution of DJ software and hardware. His early adaptation of Stanton’s Final Scratch and then later Traktor, but it is his recent work with Andy Rigby-Jones of Allen & Heath that has set tongues wagging with his MODEL 1 performance mixer. This mixer alone gives you some insight in to the mind of Richie Hawtin and what his performances are capable of. If an artist builds his own custom designed mixer, you know they are going to bring the heat.

S A T L Polish drum and bass With the Wschowa native artist SATL is fairly garnering support from industry heavy weights such as DJ new to the industry Marky, Fabio & Grooverider, but he has already set LTJ Bukem and Friction to name about stamping his but a few, it was only a matter of name on the minds of time before the young producer the major players of caught the attention of Dubai promoter Bassworx. Fresh the scene… from a summer playing at some of the hottest festivals such as Sun & Bass in Italy, Liquicity in Holland as well as Poland’s own Audioriver Festival. As well as his in-demand DJ sets, the Polish artist, which counts himself as a producer first and foremost, has been dropping his signature deep, melodic brand of d and b on esteemed labels such as Fokuz Recordings, Integral Records and Shogun. It is the former imprint that has seen SATL return with the new summer leaning 3 track “Good To Me” EP, which I can place good money being rinsed at the recent Sun and Bass festival. Making his Dubai debut on Thursday, October 19 at Casa Latina, Al Barsha will see the Polish rising star being joined by Woodle, Espace & Source, alongside a special Malvecino 3D visual light show. Just make sure you get down early to enjoy the full spectrum of drum and bass.

2ND BASE BASE Dubai continue their weekend one two punch with a star studded Defected party on Thursday, October 19 with Sonny Fodera, Sam Devine and Amine Edge & Dance representing the genre leading brand. The close-knit team of residents has been smashing up dancefloors all summer and its star player Sonny Fodera has risen to become one of their most prized artists. His new label Aarival has also proved very popular with house music’s leading names such as Low Steppa, Mat.Joe and Dirtybirds boss Claude VonStroke to name just a few. On Thursday, October 19 it will be a firm case of house music all night long.

The following night will be the turn of one of hip-hops “biggest” names - Fat Joe. The NYC rapper is also the head honcho of Terror Squad Entertainment and along with the collective Terror Squad delivered one of Joe’s biggest hits to date in 2004 in “Lean Back”. This track topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks and is certified as a gold record. Fast forward to 2017 and Joe is still doing what he does best and that is living large and delivering hot raps. Thursday, October 26 belongs to ANTS resident and firm Dubai tech house favourite Andrea Oliva. Since his early productions began hitting the clubs around 2012, support and praise in equal measures flooded in from all corners of the dance music sphere. With the Swiss artist’s early tracks pricking up the ears of Luciano and his Cadenza label, Steve Lawler and his VIVa imprint and of course being championed by everybody from The Martinez Brothers to Pete Tong the only way was up for Andrea. Remember and pack your dancing shoes for this blockbusting event, Andrea has performing at large scale events such as El Row and Ushuaia down to a fine art. To round of the coming weekends entertainment on Friday, October 27 step forward relative newcomer to the weekly Ibiza clubbing calendar – Cathylicious. A glamourous take on cabaret from the ex-wife of , Cathy will have the whole crowd under her spell in no time as she delivers the unique brand of funk, r and b and hip-hop that has made her first season at Lio Ibiza such a hit.

Recent hot news circulating that Creamfields will be returning to Abu Dhabi after a 3-year hiatus on Friday, December 8 at du Arena, Yas Island is very much a welcome announcement. Only a few artists have been announced so far, but you will not be disappointed with the line-up… Say what you will about Canadian artist deadmau5 but his creativity, skill in the studio and on stage performances can never be questioned. Joel Zimmerman has for some time been pushing the envelope of what is standard operating procedure in life in general not just music. From his insane analogue studio, to his ridiculous car collection (including the Purracan Lambourghini), often hilariously outspoken public and online persona and of course his onstage performances and mouse headgear. Deadmau5 doesn’t do things by halves and since taking the music industry be storm with his label mau5trap in 2007, he has always sought to do things differently than the rest. His early productions especially Joel’s 3rd album Random Album Title garnered critical acclaim and propelled him to the top of the dance music pile. Since those heady days deadmau5 has gone on to hit the headlines for a number of reasons ranging from deleting his Soundcloud account, suing Disney and of course turning his hand to techno with a collaborative project with Richie Hawtin named Testpilot. For a taste of what to expect check out videos of his recent 2017 tour which features a crazy re-imagination of his famous A/V cube stage production. It will blow your mind. After bringing the house down during the opening weekend of BASE Dubai, it was a certainty that Axwell would return to UAE, but this time he has his partner in crime Sebastian Ingrosso in tow. Having been elevated to stadium grade artists since the days of Swedish House Mafia the duo have formed an all-conquering duo that has set about recapturing the universe after SHM disbanded. The Swedish duo also have a long-standing affinity with Creamfields as the duo have performed at most instalments of the UK festival since 2006. This time around their arena sized EDM meets pop sensibilities will be guaranteed to be met with rapturous applause by the Abu Dhabi Creamfields crowd. With the region proving to have a huge appetite for EDM there is no doubting the sounds popularity and with new material such as Axwell’s remix of Pauls Paris “Make Up your Mind” and also the duos infectious “Mas De Lo Que Sabes (More Than You Know)” invading the charts you will be well versed by the time Creamfields rolls around on Friday, December 8.

For those that don’t know you can you tell us a little about your career in music so far? I’m involved in the music scene in two varying ways. First and foremost, I’m a saxophonist performing solo with DJs and bands for a variety of weird and wonderful local and international events. Secondly, I arrange, manage and contribute to a variety of events via my company Vento Entertainment. How long have you been in Dubai? I’ve been in Dubai 8 years. What made you decide to move to Dubai? I originally came to Dubai after being headhunted for a music teaching position with a Dubai private school chain. The allure of a magical desert cityscape, expat package and a ‘short’ (I’m Australian) flight to Europe was inescapable. What track reminds you of Dubai at its peak? I don’t believe Dubai has hit its peak. Things are changing, growing, settling and I have hope the best is to come. I think the coming years will sort the ‘boys from the men’ in many facets of the way the city works. In this way, Erykah Badu’s “On & On” hits the nail on the head. Where did you hear it and who played it? What was the reaction like? Erykah came out to Dubai in 2011 at Nasimi Beach. When she sang, everyone felt something special was happening. For me that performance reminds me of that soul searching I’m referring to. What do you think is the best thing about the Dubai scene at the moment? From a patron’s point of view the current plethora of choice available is on another level! Bars, clubs, lounges, restaurants - all these concepts are accompanied by entertainment. Having seen my beautiful hometown Sydney’s nightlife wither recently I feel Dubai’s audiences are spoilt with variety. How do you feel the scene could be improved upon? The logistics of hosting music events can be an expensive and cumbersome process. I think the city’s cultural frameworks are evolving much quicker than its legal ones. A review in regards to performance and licensing protocols could take the scene to the next level. Another point is the lack of unions here and the general scavenger mentality of the creatives. Artists, check yourselves, you’re being manipulated into turning on each other! Where will we be able to catch you in action this season? As of now Fridays I’ll be regularly at Novikov Restaurant & Lounge with DJ Trix, Chez Charles Restaurant on varied nights and Wednesday nights with 6-piece band Soul Society at Seafire Restaurant, Atlantis. More gigs to be announced soon! For more information go to ventoentertainment.com Food News

mmidubai.com /mmidubai @mmi_dubai MMIDubai It has become apparent that Apple has lost it. Don’t get me wrong, I love their hardware but their software updates?! Don’t even begin to shake my tree on this. With the updates of both their iOS and OS software coming at roughly the same it is clear that there is serious issues that go all the way through to they’re core (see what I done there?). The first mark of the recent iOS update has seen a drastic reduction in battery life, fair enough, they soon rectified this with a “fix” but the resulting updates has also seen various other issues including some apps no longer working and other performance irregularities. There is also the case of the High Sierra update which has seen massive problems for various high end application users where associated hardware no longer works. Given musicians and designers swear by Apple products to handle their creative ideas, this sort of enforced technical issues or “updates” as they are called are counterproductive to creative types such as myself. So, my words to you Apple if you are listening, “Get your act together”. Rant over.
