Exhibition Review exhibition review Kendell Geers, 1988–2012 Haus der Kunst, Munich February 1–May 12, 2013 reviewed by Nico Anklam and Christian Ganzenberg In 2013, Munich’s Haus der Kunst offered the South African artist Kendell Geers his first comprehensive solo presentation in Germany. As an introduction, Kell- ner and Geers decided to present a selection of originary objects from the artist’s oeuvre: quasi-devotional items, archival photographs, and as well as personal documents. Presented in three large showcases, these objects pro- vided the visitor with a framework to situate Geers’s aesthetics, his formal and conceptual approach. Kellner and Geers launched the show in a quasi-historicizing way by showing memorabilia of performances or specimens and footage from Geers’s life. Among others, the vitrines contained a latex mask with the features of Nelson Mandela, a death certificate of Geers’s grandfather, sociohistorical photo documents, a boyhood snapshot, and identi- fication marks, as well as copies of books by Nietzsche, Rian Malan, Antjie Krog, Isabel Allende, and J.M. Coetzee. This introduction convincingly demonstrated the acute force and immediacy of Geers’s earlier works embed- ded in the liminal phase of dramatic social and political change in South Africa. Furthermore, two widely known works chimed in to this first part of the exhibition: T.W. (CV), 1652–2013 (Fig. 6) emphasized the entanglement between the artist’s identity and his artistic practice. As a starting point for his personal curriculum vitae, Geers went back to the mid-seventeenth century, when the Dutch- man Jan van Ribbeck arrived at the Cape of Good Hope and started the first European settlement in Southern Africa.     Kendell Geers Employing a wide range of references — from the realms of history of art, pornography, iconography and kitsch — Kendell Geers questions artistic value and mocks the notion of originality. His work reveals razor-sharp humour that plays with the viewer’s repulsion and ridicules racial or religious stereotypes. Kendell Geers was born in South Africa and now lives and works in Brussels. At the 1993 Venice Biennale he officially changed his date of birth to May 1968, a momentous year in world history for human liberation and equality. Geers creates work that aims to disrupt commonly accepted moral codes and principles. Laden with complex and deep political implications, it is challenging and confrontational. At the same time, Geers’ minimalist aesthetics generate a subtle poetic undertone. His use of language, ready-mades, neon, glass, icons, film, chevron tape and other objects confront the viewer head on. They often startle the eye and require a degree of interrogation from the spectator. Geers’ work is currently included in the 2021 Bruges Triennial and Kortrijk Triennial 2021 in Belgium. ‘Love, By Any Means Necessary’, the sixth solo exhibition for the artist at Stephen Friedman Gallery, opened in February 2020. Geers curated ‘IncarNations: African Art as Philosophy’ in 2019 with Congolese collector Sindika Dokolo at Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR), Brussels. A major retrospective of his work curated by Okwui Enwezor was held at Haus der Kunst, Munich in 2013. He participated in Documenta 14 in 2017 and Documenta 11 in 2002 in Kassel, Germany. Geers’ work was included in the Venice Biennale in 2019, 2007 and 1993.

International art exhibitions have a long history that has its roots in the 19th century. Salon exhibitions took place in Paris from 1667 onwards under the auspices of the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture and were held on a biennial basis from 1855 onwards. That same year the Salons were held in the Palais de ‘l’Industrie constructed for the World’s Fair that year. A number of rival salons were established and in 1881 the government withdrew official support from the main Salon and handed over its direction to artists. Afterward, the Salon began to lose its prestige and influence in the face of competition from various independent exhibitions such as the Salon des Independents (1884), the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts (1890) and the Salon d’Automne (1903). The end of the 19th century was a time marked by an internationalist spirit that celebrated technological advancement and the accumulation of wealth through global colonial structures. The institution of world’s fairs was one feature of that spirit, the first one being held in London during 1851. Many of the fairs that followed throughout the 19th and 20th centuries included art buildings to display works by the current artists of the day. At times it is difficult to distinguish biennial and triennial art exhibitions from international art festivals, art fairs or trade shows. The first art fair one in the twentieth century was the 1913 Armory Show in New York which was open to progressive painters usually neglected.

(+34) 93 451 0064, [email protected] http://www.adngaleria.com KENDELL GEERS ProPaganDaDa From September 29th to November 5th 2016 Opening: September 29th from 7pm [Text inspired by Pierre Olivier Rollin’s “Corps à corps”] In his second solo show at ADN Galeria, South African artist Kendell Geers presents ProPaganDaDa, a series of projects that question elements such as language, the art system, history, perception and spirituality. The artworks also challenge logical mechanisms and fixed structures. Geers’ work avoids any type of verbalization, even as the artist employs linguistic elements in his pieces, or he himself writes. Many critics have attempted to describe his work, despite it being irreducible to explanations, criticisms or exegesis. Writing about Kendell Geers’ artistic production implies recognizing that the act of writing is not enough. In this case, writing is simply an uncertain, incomplete orientation; a palliative prosthesis. In order to aproach an exhibition by Kendell Geers, one must abandon all verbal weapons and accept a body to body with the artworks. That is, to accept that the body experiences and disputes with the intellect the authority of the “art comprehension”. For a long time, emotions, feelings, sensitivity, etcetera, are states that have manifested the perception of art, but Kendell Geers transcends the common repertoire. He mobilizes a wider spectrum of corporeal affections: uncertainty, unease, anxiety, fear, terror, repulsion, loathing, strength, violence… But also its inseparable contraries: satisfaction, joy, laughter, pleasure, ecstasy, attraction, desire or orgasm. Geers’ art also explores different paths that have been traditionally classified as paranormal and been dismissed by the Western approach to art.

    Kendell Geers Kendell Geers was born in South Africa and now lives and works in Brussels. At the 1993 Venice Biennale he officially changed his date of birth to May 1968, a momentous year in world history for human liberation and equality. Geers creates work that aims to disrupt commonly accepted moral codes and principles. Employing a wide range of references — from the realms of history of art, pornography, iconography and kitsch — Geers questions artistic value and mocks the notion of originality. His work reveals razor-sharp humour that plays with the viewer’s repulsion and ridicules racial or religious stereotypes. Laden with complex and deep political implications, it is challenging and confrontational. At the same time, Geers’ minimalist aesthetics generate a subtle poetic undertone. His use of language, ready-mades, neon, glass, icons, film, chevron tape and other objects confront the viewer head on. They often startle the eye and require a degree of interrogation from the spectator. ‘Love, By Any Means Necessary’, the sixth solo exhibition for the artist at Stephen Friedman Gallery, opened in February 2020. Geers curated ‘IncarNations: African Art as Philosophy’ in 2019 with Congolese collector Sindika Dokolo at Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR), Brussels. A major retrospective of his work curated by Okwui Enwezor was held at Haus der Kunst, Munich in 2013. He participated in Documenta 14 in 2017 and Documenta 11 in 2002 in Kassel, Germany.
