On Thursday 21 June, Southsea Common once again became Priory’s school for the day as every student, teacher and member of support staff headed off to the seafront to take part in a variety of sports.

Everyone was allocated a team to ensure a competitive edge to the day which has been hailed a resounding success as usual.

Students took part in a range of activities including football, basketball, handball, rounders, athletics, beach dodgeball, bench ball, tennis and ultimate frisbee. Everyone got the chance to experience four events and it was pleasing to see every year group giving their best shot. Year 8 students Harley Weekes and Paige Kingston were taking part for the second year.

Paige said, ‘It has been really nice having the whole school out and taking part in the sports. It is good to have all the space. At my we did it in the grounds so it’s nice to have the whole of the seafront.’

Harley agreed: ‘I really liked playing football which we normally play in our PE lessons. There was lots of sport 3 to choose from so the whole day was really fun.’

The annual event was organised by Mr Rackley, Head of PE, and his team of sports’ teachers. He said, “The event takes a lot of time and effort to set up but everyone loves doing it so much that it really has become an important annual fixture. I feel very privileged to head up such a prestigious event.” DAY 18 IN SUPPORT OF THE TOM PRINCE CANCER TRUST WE RAISED AN AMAZING Priory students ‘celebrated’ Blue Day for the final time as the wonderful charity has now reached its target of £1399.48 raising a million pounds.

The Tom Prince Cancer Trust was formed when Tom, a student at Priory, sadly died from cancer.

His family has gone on to raise this huge sum of money and this has happened largely with the once a year ’Blue Day’ when the city turns blue for the day. Priory students have always taken part in fundraising but this year we wanted to make it extra special. Everyone came in wearing blue and 4 also brought in lots of small change to take part in stalls and buy cakes, ice lollies and sweets- all coloured blue of course.

At the very end of last term, Priory showcased the talent of almost 100 students at the annual Dance Show. With four performances across two days and all shows completely sold out, this year’s event was, once again, a huge success.

The majority of dances were choreographed by the students and taught by them too so it was a real celebration of the teamwork, leadership and dedication that this event fosters. Styles on offer included Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Street, Contemporary, Bollywood, Lyrical and Commercial.

The students all looked absolutely fantastic as they danced their hearts out in vibrant costumes to show their friends, families and teachers what they had been working on for the past six months. Putting on our annual dance show would not be possible without the money raised by the students at the Dance Marathon, nor the time and hard work of additional students and staff.

“Thank you to all of our hard working and extremely dedicated team of student choreographers, the performers, the hair and make-up artists, our hilarious comperes, students assisting Mr Young with sound and lighting, Mrs Andrew and Mrs Medland for costumes and Miss Mazzola for stepping in to perform in the absence of a dancer due to injury. If you came to watch, thank you for your support and we hope to see you again for our next show.” Ms Spear

Girls’ Network Trip to Parliament A group of Year 10 Priory girls were excited to arrive in London and be met by Stephen Morgan MP.

He had arranged for them to take part in workshops designed to encourage an equal opportunities mind set for young girls, challenge sexism, and learn about the rise of women in politics.

The trip was arranged by The Girls’ Network and funded by Portsmouth Labour. After lunch in the very grand Portcullis House, the girls were treated to a guided tour of Westminster, led by Stephen himself. The event was linked to the celebration this year of 100 years of women receiving the right to vote. It was wonderful to see the girls’ enthusiasm for politics, commitment to challenging sexism and also having an opportunity to ask a politician such insightful questions. Priory Focus Day – a chance Southsea’s Akash Restaurant to experience a school day with forms link with Priory students a bit of a difference to teach healthy cooking To supplement the delivery of the curriculum, students were off their usual timetabled lessons for one day in order to experience some cross‑curricular enrichment activities.

Year 7 students spent the day with a Shakespeare production company while Year 11 were allowed a whole day of exciting exam workshops! The different focus has been very successful with students feeding back some very positive comments about how enjoyable or helpful the day had been. We therefore hope to continue to offer focus days in the future.
