Atlanta Braves Clippings Monday, June 29, 2020 Braves.com Braves set player pool; 4 spots remain By Mark Bowman ATLANTA -- Less than three weeks after being drafted, Jared Shuster was placed in the 60-man player pool the Braves submitted to Major League Baseball on Sunday afternoon. Shuster is not expected to make his MLB debut this year. But his inclusion on this list creates the opportunity for him to spend the next couple of months working out with some of the top members of the Braves’ development staff. First and foremost, these 60-man player pools were designed for teams to designate which members of their organization will be eligible for the 60-game regular season, which is slated to begin on July 23 or 24. But with a Minor League season this year seeming unlikely, teams also chose to fill some of these spots with their top prospects. The Braves’ pool actually includes each of their top 12 prospects (per MLB Pipeline’s rankings). But only two or three of those prospects has a shot of being added to Atlanta’s active roster at some point this year. The members of this prospect group who could be used by Atlanta this year include outfielders Cristian Pache and Drew Waters, right-handers Ian Anderson, Kyle Wright, Bryse Wilson, Jasseel De La Cruz and Huascar Ynoa, and left-handers Kyle Muller and Tucker Davidson. Shuster, a left-handed pitcher taken in this year's Draft with the 25th overall pick out of Wake Forest, is part of the group of prospects added to this list just to get some experience this year.

  • Tomlin's Misstep Costly in Indians' Loss Hitting Miller With
Tomlin's misstep costly in Indians' loss Hitting Miller with pitch sets up five-run fifth inning By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | 2:45 AM ET PHOENIX -- Shelby Miller was giving away an out and Indians starter Josh Tomlin planned on taking him up on the offer. That was until the changeup that spun from Tomlin's fingertips betrayed him, sailing high and inside and striking Miller in the chest. The Chase Field crowd unleashed some boos, but this was not malicious on Tomlin's part. It was simply a misstep, and a costly one in Cleveland's7-3 loss to the D-backs on Friday night. Instead of inducing a sacrifice bunt, Tomlin gave Miller a base, and Arizona capitalized with a five-run inning that sent the Tribe to its first loss of 2017. "You obviously want to get an out when a guy's giving you an out," Tomlin said. "He's sacrificing himself to move the guy to second base, so it kind of changed the whole dynamic of that inning." Tomlin had already been teetering before his game-changing mistake. After cruising through the first three innings, Tomlin flinched in the fourth. A walk to slugger Paul Goldschmidt helped set up a two-run outburst, which was highlighted by a Yasmany Tomas double off the wall in center. With Cleveland clinging to a 3-2 lead, Nick Ahmed led off the fifth with an infield single -- one with only a 14-percent hit probability, per Statcast™. Given the situation, a sac bunt was in order for Miller, who fouled off the first attempt before squaring around for another.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).
