May 27, 2015 The Power of Muslim-Jewish Musical Bridges By Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf Last Thursday, our organization, The Cordoba Initiative, had the unique opportunity to co- sponsor with The Brotherhood Synagogue a special interfaith event which was led by the world famous Farid Ayaz and the Abu Muhammad Qawwals and the popular Jewish folk singer Basya Schechter. In contrast to the global media’s nearly exclusive coverage of conflict between Muslims and Jews, it was so refreshing to sit in The Brotherhood’s beautiful chapel alongside Rabbi Daniel Adler and Cantor Michael Weis and be part of this transformative event where Muslims and Jews came together to celebrate their musical heritages. As a universal language, music has a unique ability to gather and unite people. Since tunes and lyrics can directly tap into our hearts, music is often the most powerful vehicle for spiritual communication. In fact, both Islam and Judaism assign music a central role in spiritual devotion. Islamic Sufism and Jewish Hassidism both emphasize the importance of music and music is central to Islamic and Jewish lifecycle events. Aside from the distinctive music of the adhan (the Muslim call to prayer) and the Torah reading, both Islamic and Jewish births, weddings, and funerals are known for their special liturgical music. Over two hundred Jews, Sunni and Shia Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus and Christians came together at our event “Qawwali and the Spiritual Alchemy of Music” to celebrate the role of music in spiritual devotion and interfaith dialogue. Our overall message was of Divine love and love of our common humanity. -

Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. Mohammad Arkoun was furthermore scientific director of the journal ARABICA (Brill: Leiden), a member of the 'French National Committee for Ethics, Weltanschauung and Health', and in 2002 a member of the international jury of the UNESCO Prize for the promotion of peace. From 2003 onwards, he held a chair within the 'Committee for Laicism in France' and was awarded the Ibn Rushd Prize for Freedom of Thought the same year in Germany. -

BRUNEI 2019 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution states that while the official religion is the Shafi’i School of Islam, all other religions may be practiced “in peace and harmony.” In April the government implemented the second and third phases of the Sharia Penal Code (SPC), which includes offenses punishable by corporal and capital punishments, including stoning to death, amputation of hands or feet, and caning. The SPC, which is in force in parallel with the common-law-based secular penal code, applies to both Muslims and non-Muslims, including foreigners, with non-Muslims exempted from certain sections. Under full SPC implementation, Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) and Religious Enforcement Division officers cooperate on investigations of crimes covered by both secular law and sharia. Following international condemnation, the sultan announced in May that the de facto moratorium on the death penalty would be extended to include cases under the SPC and that “individual privacy” would be respected. He also declared the government would ratify the United Nations Convention against Torture (UNCAT). Responding to UN expressions of concern regarding the SPC, the foreign minister reiterated that the constitution recognizes the right of non- Muslims to practice their religions “in peace and harmony.” Non-Muslims reported no significant changes with respect to the practice of minority religions following the full implementation of the SPC but noted that the law imposes new restrictions on the ability of non-Muslims to proselytize other non-Muslims, which until April had been legal. The government continued to prohibit non-Muslims from proselytizing among Muslims or persons with no religious affiliation. -

We will read and discuss the biography (sirah) of the Prophet Muhammad according to the earliest historical sources as well as analyze various sciences (‘ulum) of the Qur’an and hadith (prophetic traditions), and how these two primary Islamic sources influenced the codification of Islamic law (shari’a), creedal literature (‘aqidah), and Islamic mysticism (Sufism [tasawwuf]). We will also examine the intellectual contributions of classical and contemporary Muslim theologians, philosophers, mystics, and metaphysicians as well as examine both the history and work of the Western Academy’s critical engagement with Islam. This course will explore the fundamental religious beliefs held by Muslims for over 1400 years by covering the three dimensions of Islam as outlined in the famous hadith of Gabriel: practice (Islam), faith (Iman), and spirituality (Ihsan). In addition, we will look at various contemporary understandings and manifestations of the global phenomenon of Islam and how these understandings are shaped by various historical, societal, literary, and cultural factors. However, it remains rather opaque how God’s compassion can be fully explained in terms of comparative theology. How can Muslims relate to God’s compassion? What role does God’s compassion precisely play in the Quranic revelation and the daily practice of Muslims? Laying the Foundation Islamic theology currently faces a challenging phase of its ongoing development. Whereas the global Muslim community is engaging global modernity in the political, cultural, economic and social arenas, Islamic theology remains—aside from individual examples few and far between—somewhat reluctant to participate in new forms of comparative discourses. FOREWORD ISLAM SYMPOSIUM: AN INTRODUCTION ROBERT A. KAHN* I. ISLAM, CONSTITUTIONAL LIBERTIES, AND THE CURRENT POLITICAL CLIMATE In early 2009, the University of St. Thomas Law Journal decided to hold a symposium on “Islamic Law and Constitutional Liberty.” One moti- vation for the symposium was the hostile reception given to the Archbishop of Canterbury’s speech calling for the British legal system to take a more positive attitude toward Islamic Law.1 Another motivation arose in Ontario, where opponents of Sharia law outlawed its application in family law-based arbitration following a lengthy campaign.2 In addition to these develop- ments—which bore directly on Islamic law—came a rising tide of Euro- pean laws aimed at Muslim clothing, especially the headscarf and burqa.3 To address the growing assertion that Islam is somehow incompatible with liberal democratic norms, the symposium directed its attention to the challenges, opportunities, and tensions that might exist between Islamic law * Associate Professor of Law, University of St. Thomas School of Law. 1.
