DATE: JULY 12, 2016. 1 Introduction Advancement in technology the world over, including Nigeria decreased the number of working days and working hours, thereby providing more leisure time than ever before. This indeed has provided greater opportunities for participation in recreation, leisure and tourism activities. However, due to lack of awareness of the importance of recreation, leisure and tourism, very many people still continue to utilize their new found leisure either doing some work or doing nothing. There are no written records to show when Nigerians started to recreate and go on tour. The reason is that recreation and tourism activities are as old as man. However, the concepts ‘recreation’ and ‘tourism’ are still not understood by very many Nigerians. Many people just partake in leisure activities without knowing what they are or the scientific health benefits derived from them. Nigerians mostly partake in leisure activities in African traditional ways, before the coming of colonial masters to Nigeria, through celebration of agricultural seasons, harvesting of crops, crowning of traditional rulers, Obas, Chiefs and emirs. Before the invasion of Nigeria by the colonial masters, activities such as local wrestling (see plate 1), hunting, masquerade dance, Fulani festival activities, naming and marriage ceremonies, archery, swimming contests, horse racing, fishing, acrobatic displays and many movement activities were in place. -

Grunwaldzka 55, 50-357 Wrocław, Poland (*corresponding author e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT Stone is the oldest, natural material, which was (and still is) used as both building and sculptural material. The most commonly used for these purposes are: granites, marbles, limestones and sandstones, representing the three main genetic groups of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. All of them are permanently being destroyed in result as well of natural weathering as microbiological activity and anthropogenic pollution of atmosphere, known as deterioration. The speed of such decay depends on both environmental conditions and mineral composition of the stone and it can lead to such intensive destruction that conservation may require partial replacement. Smaller damages are refilled with appropriate mineral masses, whereas in case of bigger damages refilling with natural stone is necessary. Professional conservation practice demands the selection and use of the same rock or the rock that is, in so far as is possible, identical to that originally used. It can be done only after previous detailed petrographical studies of the original material. Only then the stone material used for reconstruction will be appropriate and stonework performed properly will not (or almost not) leave marks. -

C.– [email protected] (Received: 24th November, 2016; Accepted: 22nd March, 2017) ABSTRACT The Bouguer anomaly map of part of the Middle Benue Trough, Nigeria, was used to investigate the genetic relationship between the basement and intra-sedimentary structures in the study area. This was with a view to establishing the evidence of possible basement controlled faulting of the Cretaceous strata. Regional-residual separation of the anomalies was carried out to produce the gravity maps associated with crustal masses at deep and intermediate depth layers. The derived maps were further processed to produce Horizontal Gradient Magnitude (HGM) maps that were used to infer deep seated structures and structures existing at intermediate depth layer of the study area. -

Sc. on the occasion of his 60th Birthday Син на видния български орнитолог и природозащитник Николай Боев, проф. д. б. н Златозар Боев работи в Националния природонаучен музей при БАН (НПМ-БАН) вече в продължение на 37 години. в момента в музея той е ръководител на отдел „Гръбначни животни“. Роден е на 20 октомв- ри 1955 г. в София. Завършил е Биологическия факултет на СУ „Св. Климент охридски“. Стажувал е в Москва, Тбилиси и Лион при водещи световни специалисти. На него българската наука дължи едно ново направление – той полага основите на палеоорнитологията у нас. Благодарение на него- вите усилия НПМ-БАН притежава днес най-богатата в Югоизточна Европа колекция от фосилни и субфосилни птици, сравнителна остеологична колекция от рецентни птици и научна библиотека по палеонтология и еволюция на птиците. Приносите на проф. Боев в палеоорнитологията са све- товно признати и той се нарежда между маститите европейски специалисти в тази област. член е на 9 международни и чуждестранни научни организации. Неговата научна плодовитост е впечатля- ваща. открил и описал е 4 рода, 31 вида и 1 подвид нови за науката изкопаеми птици от България и Гърция. Има отпечатани 317 публикации в научни издания и 309 – в научно-популярни. Автор е на 18 научно-популярни книги и учебници. З. Боев вложи и много усилия в уреждането на богатата експозиция от птици в НПМ.
