Dear Brookdale Friends and Neighbors,

Lifelong Learning gets serious this fall. In addition to an impressive variety of continuing education classes, events, and bus trips, we proudly introduce Talks For Our Times, three new series designed for seriously thoughtful people. Look for the Thinker icon designating these lectures and other programs that are one-time-only opportunities

• Meet Brookdale’s history department faculty. Six members of this academic department have stepped forward to offer a unique learning opportunity honor- ing the hundredth anniversary of World War I. The program explores the many facets of WWI and its impact on the world we live in today. This collaborative effort between the academic history department and Continuing & Professional Studies is a first of its kind. It is underwritten by a generous sponsor and offered to the community at a reduced price. See page 2.

• Also featured as novel, multi-lecture series is Classic Themes/Fresh Perspectives, presenting new voices of young scholars. Fresh new light is shed upon timeless themes including humanitarian efforts, philanthropy, and women’s rights. See page 27.

• And don’t miss newly developed lectures focused on all things (people, places, and historic events) uniquely from The Boss to an early criminal execution, Monmouth County mysteries abound. See page 26.

People who are interested are the most interesting among us. If you are eager to better understand the world and meet others who are intellectually curious, join us. Nothing beats the energy and excitement of a college campus in fall!

18 Irish Heritage

IRISH HERITAGE

Cead mile failte romhaibh Feels like going home…

Over 2,000 years old, the Irish language boasts the oldest living literature in Western Europe. Despite colonial attempts to destroy the language – it is alive and well – and here at Brookdale! Instructors at all levels have earned the Fáinne Óir, and our classes are informal, fun, and stress-free.

Irish Language Designed for beginners to fluent speakers, students will be divided into groups, each with its own instructor, based on abilities and needs. Groups will interact with one another and participate in joint activities. This format will enhance the objective of keeping Irish available as the living, spoken language at the very heart of Irish culture. Whether you're looking to dive into the Tain Bo Culaigne or just pick up a few phrases for travel, this program will work for you! 10 SESSIONS Thurs, Sep 10-Nov 12, 7-8:30 pm Fee and Code: $119, XIRIL 025

The Easter Rising: A Hundred Years Later Henry McNally, Irish historian In April of 2016, one hundred years will have passed since Padraig Pearse emerged from the General Post Office and announced the creation of an Irish Republic. Pearse was not taken seriously by most and six days later, when he ordered the surrender of his small “army,” he was mocked and rebuked. Two weeks after that, he was dead, victim of a British firing squad. In the short-term, this rebellion can be viewed only as a failure. Yet many regard the event as critical to Irish independence. There is resulting confusion among Irish-Americans, even among some Irish, as to the dates and the process leading to Ireland’s recognition on the world stage as a free and independent Republic. Celebrate the centennial of the Easter Rising through a careful examination of events leading to rebellion, a detailed look at the rebellion itself, a consideration of the events of the succeeding decade, and a brief look at Ireland’s eventual self-declaration as a free and independent Republic. In addition to lecture and discussion, there will be extensive use of pertinent video productions. 5 SESSIONS Tues, Sep 8-Oct 6, 7-9 pm Fee and Code: $69, XIRIG 122 Languages 19

The Center for World War II Studies and Conflict Resolution strives to educate the community about the war’s impact on world history and thus help prevent future armed conflict. The Longest Walk Paul Zigo, Associate Professor of History Mr. Zigo will present a lecture on the recently published book, The Longest Walk. It is the amazing story of the 116th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army’s 29th Infantry Division from D-Day June 6, 1944 to the capture of St. Lo, France, 40 agonizing days later - "the longest walk." The regiment's achievements after landing on Omaha Beach, on D-Day forever altered world history. It lost one-third of its 3200 men on Omaha Beach including more than 350 dead. The regiment's devastating assault is featured in the riveting opening scene of the movie Saving Private Ryan. Come and hear how the regiment turned near- failure on the invasion beaches of Normandy into a success, ultimately leading to Allied victory on May 8, 1945.
