The conflict between the Church of the Goths and the Russian Orthodox Church – A comparison between the Church of the Goths (and similar churches) and the Moscow Patriarchate By: Isak Nygren Supervisor: Jørgen Straarup Examiner: David Thurfjell Abstract This essay is mainly about the Church of the Goths and about the Russian Orthodox Church, and their conflict. The essay will be focusing about important persons in these two churches. This essay will be tracing back the roots of the Church of the Goths, since it is a church, that is unknown by most people in this world. My research will be making a distinction of the differences between the Church of the Goths and the Russian Orthodox Church. This essay will also be discussing the heritage of the Gothic people and the theories of the Goths. The methods in the essay, is academic sources, information from the Church of the Goths and from the Russian Orthodox Church. The results shows how the information was found, and now it is published for the first time about the Church of the Goths. This means the Church of the Goths has a stronger ground than first expected. They had a dinner for the students and the staff within the study of religion during my first semester at Södertörn. It was David Thurfjell, a teacher and an associate professor, now a professor at the school, who later became my teacher in some classes, who first inspired me. I told him and other people in the staff about the Archdiocese of the Goths, which the Church of the Goths is formerly known as. No one of the staff, nor the students had ever heard of them before. I do not blame them. This church is still unknown, since they are very small in Sweden. David Thurfjell suggested that I should write about them at some point. I thought this idea was very good and waited till the last major essay on the bachelor level to research about the Church of the Goths. Since my original plan was to travel to Russia with Thomas Sutter, who is the bishop Teodorik of Gotland and the only bishop left in the Church of the Goths in Sweden, I will mention more about the archbishop Ambrose in another chapter. I had to cancel the trip due to long bureaucracy process about visas to Russia. Even though I am not a member of the Church of the Goths, I have friends in this church, so I’ve had to ask myself if it is possible to be neutral in my portrayal towards the Church of the Goths. It is not my purpose to write a tribute publication about them, nor being antagonist towards them, thus is it not my purpose to offend them either. Another problem is I cannot find any research about the Church of the Goths, True Orthodox Christians nor the True Orthodox Church in languages such as Swedish, English, Danish and Norwegian. However, this is a very good opportunity for me to be the first one to research about them, unless the research is published in languages such as Russian, Ukrainian, Greek, Latin or another language which I do not master. Since I am not an Orthodox Christian myself, this will surely become a challenge for me, since I have to study the basics of Orthodox Christianity from the beginning, to try to understand them. On the other hand, there is plenty of research of the Moscow Patriarchate, since it is the official Russian Orthodox Church in Russia and exists where many Russians live in exile as well. This is the reason for me to write this research in English and not in Swedish. 1 1.1 Aim and purpose First and foremost, almost no academic research has been done on this subject. Due to this, the aim of this research is to find information about the Church of the Goths and the Russian True Orthodox Church. Another thing, is there is something called True Orthodox Christians. No matter if it is Russian or not, it can easily be confusing, since the names are very similar.1 However, the True Orthodox Christians and the True Orthodox Church are closely tied with the Church of the Goths. They share so much history that it is pointless to even try to write about the differences between them. I will compare some of the theological issues the Church of the Goths may have in common with the Moscow Patriarchate. I want to see what the Church of the Goths have in common and especially where they disagree with the Moscow Patriarchate. Another purpose, is to find out if the Church of the Goths’ history, which they claim to have, is according to the historical sources. I know there is a lot of sources about the Russian Orthodox Church, since they are the biggest church in Russia and have been that for around a thousand years. There are many sources that affirm their history already. The main issues will be shown in my interviews. My main research questions are: What are the historical roots of the Church of the Goths? What are the historical roots of the Moscow Patriarchate? What are the differences between them? What do they have in common? 1.2 Method I will first compare the theological texts with the Church of the Goths and the Moscow Patriarchate. Since the Church of the Goths itself is a part of the True Orthodox Church2, I will also do a comparative study between the Church of the Goths and specifically with the Russian Orthodox Church, to see if there are any differences in their beliefs at all. I will write about their historical roots, which is well known when it comes to the Russian Orthodox Church, but not when it comes to the Church of the Goths. Then I will merge the old information with the new information, so it will be easier to understand what is old and what new information there is in this essay. 1 Thomas Sutter told this in a phone conversation in Swedish at 10/03/2014. 2 http://www.gotark.org/default.html. One is with Bishop Teodorik Sutter from the Church of the Goths, the other with Archpriest Babushin from the Moscow Patriarchate, (i.e. the Russian Orthodox Church) in Sweden. However the interviews will be used in Appendix C and Appendix D. I will also be writing about the critics towards the Church of the Goths and the Moscow Patriarchate (Russian Orthodox Church). However, the Church of the Goths, the Russian True Orthodox Church and the Russian True Orthodox Christians share almost the same history. Only for a short amount of time, do the Catacomb Churches, which is an umbrella definition of different dissident churches in Russia, including the Church of the Goths, share the same history with the Russian Orthodox Church (the Moscow Patriarchate). Some sources I used which are academic, is an Orthodox and also Russian Orthodox Christian author, who is writing about the Russian Orthodox Church.

Often the Fathers of the Church would have preferred to keep silent, continuing in prayer and living the truths of Divine Revelation, which car. at best be imperfectly reflected in human words. Th discourses they have left in defense of the Faith art very often more in the nature of fences surrounding the Truth - declaring what God is not, while God in His essence remains unfathomable to the human mind.     'The True Orthodox Church of Russia VLADIMIR MOSS For the last 60 years or more, the existence of the True Orthodox Church has been one of the best-kept secrets of Soviet 'reality'. The 'True Orthodox', or 'Catacomb', or 'Tikhonite' Church claims to be the direct descendant of the Russian Orthodox Church as it existed before the revolution and in the first decade after the revolution under Patriarch Tikhon and his successor, the locum tenens of the patriarchal throne, Metropolitan Petr of Krutitsy. In 1927, however, the True Orthodox argue, power in the Russian Church was usurped by one of the senior hierarchs, Metropolitan Sergi of Nizhni Novgorod, who issued a declaration in which he thanked the Soviet state for its great services to Orthodoxy, declared that the Soviet state's joys were the church's joys and its sorrows the church's sorrows, and placed himself in more or less unconditional submission to the atheist state. This declaration was rejected not only by Metropolitan Petr, the lawful head of the Russian Orthodox Church (in prison at that time), but also by most of the senior bishops of the church and a large proportion of the faithful (90 per cent of the parishes in the Urals, for example). The schism thus created was vigQlously exploited and deepened by the KGB, who sent to the camps or shot any bishop or priest who did not accept the declaration of Metropolitan Sergi, and with the active support of Sergi, who denounced his opponents as 'counter-revolutionaries' - the equiva­ lent of a death sentence in those terrible times.

One often encoun- ters mention of it in the pages devoted to the new history of Russian Ortho- doxy. Most often, these citations do not exceed two-three words or conjectures. This is not surprising, since there does not exist a complete collection of docu- ments and eyewitness accounts, even about those phenomena and events in the life of the Church during this period, which took place in plain view of everyone. It is even more difficult to collect information about that which, by its very name, tells the story about the existence of “the underground church.” Several accounts deny the reality of the “catacomb church,” while others disseminate extremely inauthentic information about it. Did it exist in reality, and if so, what was it like? In order to answer these questions, it is necessary briefly to touch on the history of the church division, which emerged in the period between the two world wars. Since the seventeenth century, the epoch of the Old Believers’ schism, the Church in Russia hardly lived through such a stormy period, full of dramatic events, as it did in the first half of our century. The prerevolutionary years of the twentieth century were not peaceful, and attempts were made to free the Church from the guardianship of the government. Although a sizable part of the clergy and laypeople was accustomed to the existing (synodal) situation, more and more persistently voices were raised, calling for the renaissance and renovation of church life.

On the origins of the Gothic novel: From Old Norse to Otranto Martin Arnold A primary vehicle for the literary Gothic in the late eighteenth to early nineteen centuries was past superstition. The extent to which Old Norse tradition provided the basis for a subspecies of literary horror has been passed over in an expanding critical literature which has not otherwise missed out on cosmopolitan perspectives. This observation by Robert W. Rix (2011, 1) accurately assesses what may be considered a significant oversight in studies of the Gothic novel. Whilst it is well known that the ethnic meaning of ‘Gothic’ originally referred to invasive, eastern Germanic, pagan tribes of the third to the sixth centuries AD (see, for example, Sowerby 2000, 15-26), there remains a disconnect between Gothicism as the legacy of Old Norse literature and the use of the term ‘Gothic’ to mean a category of fantastical literature. This essay, then, seeks to complement Rix’s study by, in certain areas, adding more detail about the gradual emergence of Old Norse literature as a significant presence on the European literary scene. The initial focus will be on those formations (often malformations) and interpretations of Old Norse literature as it came gradually to light from the sixteenth century onwards, and how the Nordic Revival impacted on what is widely considered to be the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole (1717-97).

Inchoate, polemical, insulting, bereft of any real scholarly substance, drawing half-truths from the misuse of historical and Patristic texts, and posturing as a Patristic commentary, it does little to address the real issues of so-called Old Calendarist zealotry. In his observations, which are basically a response to an earlier article (written in 1999) by Father Nicholas Demaras on the ecclesiology of resistance (criti- cizing the Gregoriou Monastery for not walling itself off from the Orthodox ecumenists), Father Basil (a former “zealot” who, I am told but have not confirmed, is now an Archimandrite in Crete) comes to sweepingly broad conclusions drawn from difficult canonical, historical, and Patristic texts that he presents in a naive and, of course, self-serving way, grinding his axe on a soft stone.

This dissertation fills that void by demonstrating an ongoing negotiation of Gothic conventions in select works by canonical Danish writers such as B.S. And yet his career was already one of immense courage and holiness. In the 1940s he had suffered torture at the hands of the Japanese for refusing to bow to an idol in Harbin; in 1945 he was the only clergyman in the city who refused to accept a Soviet passport or commemorate the Soviet authorities that now took control of China; and in the 1950s he was subjected to torture by the Chinese communists, who unsuccessfully tried to blow him up but left him permanently injured. Involuntarily, after 1945 he found himself in the Moscow Patriarchate. But this burdened his conscience greatly, and he continued to denounce the Soviet Antichrist. Finally he got his chance to escape the nets of the communists and Soviet church: in 1961 he was able to leave China. “When, finally, with the help of God I managed to extract myself from red China, the first thing I did was turn to the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, Metropolitan Anastasy, with a request that he consider me again to be in the jurisdiction of the Russian Church Abroad. Vladyka Metropolitan replied with mercy and love, and immediately blessed me to serve in Hong Kong already as a priest of the Synodal jurisdiction, and pointed out that every church server passing into this jurisdiction from the jurisdiction of Moscow must give a special penitential declaration to the effect that he is sorry about his (albeit involuntary) stay in the Moscow jurisdiction.
