For the last 200 years, the burning of fossils fuels such as coal and oil, and deforestation have caused the concentrations of heat trapping greenhouse gases to increase significantly in the atmosphere. Although India has one of the lowest per capita emissions of greenhouse gases, it is the world’s fourth largest emitter of carbon dioxide and its huge population and fast growing economy make it a major player in climate change.
