Marnhull Conservation Areas Second Stage Survey March 1971 This month, we are dealing with the few comments Mr Pakenham (the Welcome to your Area North Planning Officer) made on the Marnhull Conservation Area Marnhull Messenger around the Church. In March 1971, this part of the Conservation Area only extended from The Barn, on the North side of the B3092 road, through Chris Ryu - Messenger Editor The Crown Inn and St Gregory’s Church to include Seniors Farm. Subsequently, the Conservation Area was extended along the North side Welcome to the July/August issue! of New Street, all the way to Sackmore Lane. Marnhull Baby and Toddlers Marnhull Music Society We have had a lovely few weeks with Mother's day craft on 23rd March, where we made Mother's day stand up cards, we also gave all our lovely Mums a bunch of daffodils, which the children loved presenting. Marnhull Music Society On 30th March we planted sunflower seeds, the children planted 3 seeds David Woodhouse’s programme entitled “Music that I Enjoy” was rather in a plant pot. they enjoyed playing with the soil as well as seeing what like taking his listeners into an auditory sweetshop. Modern times were celebrated by the driving dance rhythms of Leonard Bernstein’s America from “West Side Story” – an opera in all but name in my estimation. We were treated to a virtuoso performance by David Oistrach playing Beethoven’s Romance for Violin and Orchestra, and the first half ended with the hauntingly lovely sound of Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus. After coffee we started with Mozart’s Salzburg Symphony. The stately and solemn Sarabande by Handel preceded another opera favourite, the duet from Act 1 of La Boheme by Puccini. Then we heard the green and fragrant tones of Vaughan William’s Fantasia on Greensleeves. Does anyone else see music in terms of colour? I often find English music evokes a green sensation. After a short and envigorating burst of Telemann’s Trumpet Concerto the concert finished with Rossini’s William Tell overture. As David said, the first part of this piece with its mosaic of woodwind playing is actually more interesting than the moment when the Lone Ranger bursts onto the scene. But as usual I will indulge myself with a favourite moment of the evening, and that was Cecelia Bartolli’s heartbreaking interpretation of Handel’s Lascia la Spina – pure sensory delight. 15 J Marnhull Messenger Churches July/August 2018

Thoughts from the Deacon St. Gregory's Church What is the price to pay for our community? Should we accept, and indeed, protect the “status quo”, or should we be prepared to accept or even welcome change? As I sit here at my desk, I have a copy of this week’s Blackmore Vale Magazine beside me. One of the main story on the front page refers to the planning application to build 141 new homes in Marnhull. Emotive words such as “fear” and “horrified” suggests that this development will be one which stirs emotions in the community. By nature we are always proud of our communities, and we become very protective of any changes which are likely to alter our own “perfect” community. Services & Events for July 2018 “Community” , in a much bigger way, is at the centre of our news, with Morning Prayer is held daily from Tuesday to Friday at 8.00 in the the UK’s imminent separation from our European neighbours. All the Hussey Chapel discussions of our future has made me more aware that any community is organic, and as such needs nurturing to grow and thrive. Sunday 1st (5th Sunday after Trinity) I have had to reflect on this community growth recently. I was invited 08:00- Holy Communion [said] to join the community at Buckfast Abbey in Devon as they celebrated 10:00- Parish Eucharist their Millennium – 1000 years. Those who know the Abbey at Buckfast Wednesday 4th might realise that the building doesn’t date back 1000 years, However, 09.00 – Children's Service led by St Gregory's Primary School the original abbey founded in 1018 by Aylward, Earldorman of Devon, under the approval of King Canute. Of the 11 Benedictine monasteries (coffee before service) existing at that time, the original Abbey was described as “small and 11:00 - Parish Communion unprosperous", and its existence was described as “precarious”, especially Sunday 8th (6th Sunday after Trinity) after the Norman conquest. 08:00- Holy Communion [said] The success of the modern monastic community, established when 10:00- Parish Eucharist Benedictine monks returned from France and rebuilt the Abbey between 1906 and 1938, has been a model of a community working together Wednesday 11th both within and outside of the local area. The monks of the monastic 09:00- Children's Service led by St Gregory's Primary School community live in harmony with each other and they interact with the (coffee before service) surrounding communities, working in the community not covered by Sunday 15th (7th Sunday after Trinity) monastic rules. 08.00 – Holy Communion [said] Whenever we are faced with a change in our own community we usually 10.15 - Special Family Service provide a defence against any change. Should we not, however, be prepared to grasp that change and look for ways in which the change Wednesday 18th can give rise to an improvement in our existing locality. 09.00 - Children’s Service led by St Gregory’s Primary School If we look at North Dorset we soon realise that 141 houses is a drop in the ocean. Neighbourhood plans for most of the towns of North Dorset have Sunday 22nd (8th Sunday after Trinity) identified the need for development of housing stock associated with 08.00 – Holy Communion [said] essential local services, 141 homes in Marnhull seems article compared 10.00 – Parish Eucharist to the tidal wave of housing planned in Gillingham with 1,800 homes on Monday 23rd- St Gregory's School Leavers Service the cards by 2031. Perhaps we need to look at the example of some of the monastic Sunday 29th (9th Sunday after Trinity) communities of the Benedictines, who gathered support from the afore- 08:00- Holy Communion [said] mentioned King Canute in 1018. Perhaps there might be more success 10:00- Parish Eucharist turning back the tide of housing development than King Canute is reported to have had with the tidals waters in the 11th century. Long may we hope and pray! www.stgregorysmarnhull.org.uk

Owls and Rabbits classes visited the Safewise centre in Weymouth. They found out lots about keeping safe at home and out on the roads. Some of the safety messages they learnt were “Matches, lighters never touch, they can hurt you very much” and “Get out, Stay out, call 999” If your clothes catch on fire you must “Stop, drop and roll” which they practiced during a Strictly Come Dancing competition, when the siren went they stopped dancing and dropped down to the ground and rolled. They made posters We have had a very busy month, we finished May's theme of gardening with these messages on to bring back to class with them. off with a lovely visit from Linda and Ian from Marnhull gardening club. The children loved having them to visit , they really enjoyed decorating “It was fantastic and we were exhausted at the end of the day.” Felicity their bird feeders with Linda ready to go in their gardens. They also had “I learnt not to put phones under pillows.” Chloe great fun helping Ian plant Marigolds and talking through what they need to grow and they watered them so they could go in their gardens. They also taught us a new worm song and made all the children a little wiggly worm. It was a lovely way to end our gardening theme, and the parents very much appreciated them coming in and have asked if they are coming back.

We had a week off for half term, then we came back on 7th June to start our new theme of Dinosaurs, which the children were very excited about. To help us start our theme we had a visit from Gill with her Usborne books, she helped by bringing as many dinosaur books as she could and we had a very big display with them. We also made Diplodocus's and Stegosaurus's out of paper plates, they looked fantastic.

We would like to say a massive thank you to the lovely ladies who run Year 5 children are on a residential visit to Torquay where they are finding the Poppin Cafe as they very kindly bought us a dinosaur playset, it is the courage to jump backwards off an abseil tower and build a raft to race amazing and the children absolutely love it we have been able to use across a lake, as well as experiencing a huge range of exciting adventure to start our theme off and on the 14th were very excited to see it back activities to help them build confidence and learn new skills. out to carry on our theme.
