Newell Highway upgrade at Coonabarabran preferred option
Option 3 – Outer bypass Roads and Maritime Services is planning an upgrade of the Newell Highway at Coonabarabran and has identified option three, the outer bypass to the east, as its preferred option. The project will reduce travel time and increase safety of road users and pedestrians. A bypass will remove trucks from local streets, and reduce noise and air pollution in town. Option three would start on the Newell Highway at the 100 km/h zone (about 1.6 kilometres south of Bandulla Street) and it would rejoin the existing Newell Highway near the current Oxley and Newell Highway intersection. It will provide an eight kilometre long bypass to the east of town. Preferred option features • Construction of a bypass east of town • Newell Highway and Oxley Highway intersection upgrade • A new bridge over the Castlereagh River.
Next steps include field work investigations, incorporating geotechnical testing, environmental studies, noise monitoring and heritage studies. We will continue to liaise with the community and stakeholders during the planning process with the next opportunity for feedback invited at the display for the Review of Environmental Factors and concept design , expected to be in mid-2020.
