MOUND & ALICE WELLS Australian National Insect Collection CSIRO, PO Box 1700, Canberra, ACT 2601 [email protected] Abstract Drypetothrips korykis gen. et sp.n. is described as inducing leaf-margin galls on a small tree in Australia, Drypetes deplanchei [Putranjivaceae]. This thrips is similar in appearance to the smaller species of the genus Kladothrips that induce galls on Acacia species. The galls are invaded by a phytophagous kleptoparasitic thrips, Pharothrips hynnis gen. et sp.n., females of which have a forked plough-like structure protruding ventrally on the frons that is unique amongst Thysanoptera. Key words: autapomorphy, systematic relationships, leaf-margin galls, Australia Introduction The small tree, Drypetes deplanchei [Putranjivaceae], is widespread across northern Australia as far south as New- castle on the east coast. This tree is sometimes referred to as native holly, because the leaf margins can be sharply dentate, but these margins may also be almost smooth, and a species of thrips has been found inducing rolled margin galls on both leaf forms (Fig. 1). These galls and their thrips have been found at sites near Taree in coastal New South Wales, and also at Mt. Nebo near Brisbane in south-eastern Queensland. -

It can establish as a dense understorey that suppresses other growth leading to monocultures. view this species on IUCN Red List Species Description “Tree (2-) 3-8 (-12)m high, the trunk narrowly buttressed at the base; leaves oblong-elliptical, acute or shortly acuminate, 7-15cm long, up to 6cm broad; pedicel curved, expanded distally; sepals 4.5mm long, 9mm broad, apiculate; outer petals valvate, ovate-cordate, cream-coloured with a crimson spot at base within, 2.5-3cm long, 2-2.5cm broad; inner petals subimbricate, shortly clawed, 2-2.5cm long, 1.5-1.7cm broad, whitish outside, dark crimson within; stigmas sticky, deciduous; fruit up to 12cm long, 8cm broad, yellow outside when ripe, pulp pinkish- orange, rather dry, pungent-aromatic; seeds light brown, 1.5cm long, 1cm broad.” (Adams, 1972. Sumatra is, on the whole, even less well collected than New Guinea. The flora appears to contain a few endemic species of this family, but only one endemic genus Loerzingia Airy Shaw. An artificial key to 59 genera is given. Each genus is provided with a key to species and short diagnostic accounts. The family Stilaginaceae with the only genus Antidesma of 17 species and Pandaceae (Galearia and Microdesmis) are appended with the same treatment as for Euphorbiaceae. Three new Euphorbiaceae species have been described : Claoxylon tenuiflorum A. Shaw; Drypetes ochrodashya A. Shaw; and Glochidion leucocaspum A. Shaw. BASS, P.R., G BESINK, W.A. VAN H EEL and J. This interesting taxon was first collected by Griffith in 1843 from Mergui and described by him in 1844. Abstract A new species of Colubrina from the Amazon region of Ecuador is described and illustrated. The species is characterized by its elliptical and distichously arranged leaves, 10–18 × 4–8 cm, and the presence of basal, concave elliptical, glands, the short-shoots of the inflorescence with few nodes and seeds with two inner sides flat-concave and third side, as wide as the previous two and convex. The new species has been widely collected in areas below 700 m, and is expected to occur in similar habitats in the border areas of Colombia and Peru. Key words: Colubrina, amazonica, concave glands, Ecuador Introduction Colubrina Richard ex Brongniart (1826: 61) in the family Rhamnaceae includes 32 species. Species of this genus are distinguished by simple, alternate, distichously arranged leaves, with two glands at the base of the leaves or glands rarely scattered on the abaxial surface. Their inflorescence are arranged in fascicles or a cyme with bisexual flowers, and with a cup-shaped floral tube, with 5 stamens clasped by the petals; a discoid nectary disc fused to the floral tube. The fruits of Colubrina are dry, and fragment into three dehiscent cocci at maturity. -
