In fact, they are like nowhere else on Earth. Niue offers a banquet of rare and exciting delights, then allows space for you to explore and enjoy them on your own. Far from wrapping its visitors in commercial cotton padding, the island of Niue exposes the raw traveller within, the one inside that aches for genuine adventure and authentic experiences. This does not imply, however, that a holiday to Niue means sacrificing modern comforts, for the island’s tourism industry is well equipped and its people are warm and accommodating. It does suggest though that instead of preparing for a holiday of retail therapy and passive entertainment, visitors to Niue should pack a pair of good walking shoes and their adventurous spirit. Niue is a one-island destination, offering its abundant gifts within an oval shape approximately 68km in diameter. Being one of the world’s largest raised coral atolls, its fascinating landscape is unlike the surrounding islands of Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands. Instead of long stretches of sandy beaches, the coastal limestone cliffs of Niue hide a vast network of magnificent caves and secluded swimming coves. Inland, the island shelters lush rainforests teeming with unique flora and fauna. These natural wonders exist in a pleasant climate that rarely reaches above 30°C in winter (May to October) and is similar throughout summer with possible increases in temperature (November to April). Originally settled by Polynesians from Samoa around 900AD, Niue is now classed as a self-governing country in free association with New Zealand, with the New Zealand dollar as local currency. Whilst English is spoken alongside the native Niuean language and all children receive a high level of western-style education, strong Polynesian roots predominate the Niuean lifestyle and their vibrant culture is cause for much celebration. Flights to Niue are serviced by Air New Zealand, flying from Auckland International Airport twice a week in peak season. With a population on-island of less than 1500 people, the Niueans are like one big family. They smile and wave to all who pass, making visitors feel at home on arrival. With virtually no crime or dangerous wildlife, the island is a haven of relaxed exploration. In the daytime, discover spectacular walking tracks and caves, snorkel the coral reefs or dive amongst the crystal clear underwater caverns. Out to sea, enjoy Niue’s world-class fishing, or swim with dolphins and migrating Humpback whales (July to September). At night, watch the giant coconut crabs emerging, and then satisfy a well-earned hunger at a selection of restaurants and eateries. At the end of just one adventurous day in Niue, upon retiring to any one of the charming accommodations available, visitors rest with a deep sense of satisfaction and a childlike awe for the natural world.

    2011 NORFOLK ISLAND ROADMAP SUBMISSIONS FEEDBACK SUMMARY NORFOLK ISLAND ROADMAP SUBMISSIONS FEEDBACK SUMMARY Summary The Norfolk Island Roadmap was developed to inform future directions in relation to structural reform of Norfolk Island’s self-government model. The roadmap is a discussion document, and has been developed to enable targeted consultation between the Australian Government, the Norfolk Island Government (NIG) and the local community. The key Norfolk Island Roadmap reforms are: - Governance through providing a stronger, more open and transparent form of government, building on the reforms in the Territories Law Reform Act 2010. - Economic development through quick action to address barriers to tourism, particularly reform of air services, access to the Island, and facilities for cruise ships. - Enabling the Norfolk Island Public Service to provide good financial and policy advice and effective services to the Norfolk Island Government and community. - Obligation by Norfolk Island residents to contribute to the Australian tax system; - Social services including adequate health, welfare and education, support for vulnerable citizens and providing educational opportunities. - Preserving and enhancing the environment and heritage attributes of the Island including the Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area and the other natural areas of Norfolk Island and recognizing their contribution to the economy and community. - Extend Commonwealth laws to the Island to promote improved economic growth and diversification. The Roadmap was circulated for public comment by the NIG and this round of consultation closed on 20 May 2011. 153 submissions were received either by the NIG or the Department. All submissions were then collated by the Department in line with the NIG’s requested that it conduct the analysis.

    17 PART 2 DESCRIPTION The 11 sites that constitute the ‘property’ are spread across Australia, from Fremantle in the west to Kingston and Arthur’s Vale in the east, a distance of 5,500 kilometres, and from Old Great North Road in the north to Port Arthur in the south, a distance of 1,500 kilometres. Australia's rich convict history is well represented by approximately 3,000 remaining sites distributed across several States and Territories. The assessment to establish the most representative sites drew on a wide body of research to locate a complete representation of all the significant elements which together express all the elements of outstanding universal value. The sites span several climatic zones (from Mediterranean in the west to temperate in the south and sub-tropical in the mid-north), cover four time zones and are connected by a network of maritime routes throughout the Indian, Southern and Pacific oceans. Some female convicts were sent there in its earlier years but the overwhelming number of convicts were male. KAVHA comprises more than 40 buildings, groups of buildings, substantial ruins and archaeological remains set within 225 hectares of relatively undisturbed land.
