TimeLine Theatre fills a niche in Chicago’s vibrant theater community by exploring history and generating discussion about today’s social and political issues. To supplement the information presented with this program, dramaturg Maren Robin- son has created a comprehensive study guide with more historical context and details about the numerous literary and historical references in The History Boys. This material greatly expands upon the information presented in this program book. A limited number of copies of the study guide are available at the Box Office, or you may download the en- tire document at timelinetheatre.com/history_boys/HistoryBoys_StudyGuide.pdf We hope these materials enhance your experience of seeing this at TimeLine!

TimeLine Theatre Company presents stories inspired by history that connect with today’s social and political issues. Our collaborative artistic team produces provocative theatre that engages, educates, entertains and enlightens.

A SNAPSHOT

As we celebrate our 12th season during 2008-09, TimeLine Theatre Company seeks to continue the extraordinary legacy of Chicago theater companies that started small, dreamed big and matured into prominent institutions that enrich the cultural landscape of the city. Aspiring to be a leader among these vital organizations, TimeLine continues to grow steadily — expanding artistic programs, building infrastructure and nurturing our Living History Education Program for high school students to bring our mission to a new generation. TimeLine’s distinctive mission explores the stories that define the past and resonate in the present. The company chooses historically inspired material that will create a dialogue among audience members about the social and political issues facing society today. The heart of TimeLine is our team of Company members, who shape the artistic vision and choose the programming for the organization. But the TimeLine family extends much further, including associate artists and welcoming other emerging and estab- lished artists to contribute to the company’s work. When we look back at TimeLine’s early days, we always recall the first article written about the company. It appeared in the Chicago Tribune during our inaugural season. It said: “[They’re] gambling on history ... betting they can find a niche for themselves by specializing in history plays — and unsettling ones at that. ... Time — and the vagaries of history — will tell.” Twelve seasons, 40 plays, six world premieres and 11 Chicago premieres later, TimeLine’s work has received consistent audience and critical acclaim. We have been honored with 37 Non-Equity Jeff Awards, including a Non-Equity Jeff Award for Outstanding Produc- tion six of the last eight years. We also have worked hard to match artistic excellence with sophisticated business man- agement, and these efforts have been recognized. In 2006, we were honored to receive the Alford-Axelson Award for Nonprofit Managerial Excellence of a small company. The award is given annually to an organization that exemplifies extraordinary managerial excellence, and TimeLine was the first arts organization to receive the award. Most recently, TimeLine received the 2009 Richard Goodman Strategic Planning Award in the Non-Profit category from the Association for Strategic Planning. Thank you to everyone who has worked with us and supported us along this remark- able timeline. We’re honored to have made history with all of you and look forward to everything that is to come!

10 program OUR COMMITMENT the company

TimeLine considers every subscription purchased and every donation made to be an investment in our work, and we are committed to helping all our supporters under- stand how impactful their contributions are. This year we are providing investors with a view into our organization — both on stage and behind the scenes — through a pub- lication we call InsideStory. As we monitor our progress through these tough economic times, we plan to send out a new report in each quarter of 2009. All non-profits should serve the public interest, and we must use our investors’ dollars wisely to nourish artistically ambitious programming. It is crucial for us to focus on what makes TimeLine unique — our mission to produce plays inspired by history that spark conversation about the times we live in and connect to you, our audience. We want TimeLine to be a place that encourages thought, emotion and discourse, and that can only happen with your involvement. To learn how to invest in TimeLine as a subscriber or donor (or both!) and begin receiving InsideStory, please speak with our staff or visit timelinetheatre.com.
