GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF WATER RESOURCES CENTRAL GROUND WATER BOARD GROUND WATER INFORMATION BOOKLET KODAGU DISTRICT, KARNATAKA SOMVARPET KODAGU VIRAJPET SOUTH WESTERN REGION BANGALORE AUGUST 2007 FOREWORD Ground water contributes to about eighty percent of the drinking water requirements in the rural areas, fifty percent of the urban water requirements and more than fifty percent of the irrigation requirements of the nation. Central Ground Water Board has decided to bring out district level ground water information booklets highlighting the ground water scenario, its resource potential, quality aspects, recharge – discharge relationship, etc., for all the districts of the country. As part of this, Central Ground Water Board, South Western Region, Bangalore, is preparing such booklets for all the 27 districts of Karnataka state, of which six of the districts fall under farmers’ distress category. The Kodagu district Ground Water Information Booklet has been prepared based on the information available and data collected from various state and central government organisations by several hydro-scientists of Central Ground Water Board with utmost care and dedication. This booklet has been prepared by Shri M.A.Farooqi, Assistant Hydrogeologist, under the guidance of Dr. K.Md. Najeeb, Superintending Hydrogeologist, Central Ground Water Board, South Western Region, Bangalore. I take this opportunity to congratulate them for the diligent and careful compilation and observation in the form of this booklet, which will certainly serve as a guiding document for further work and help the planners, administrators, hydrogeologists and engineers to plan the water resources management in a better way in the district. Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society, 104 (2), May-Aug 2007 155-162 SMALL CARNIVORES OF KARNATAKA SMALL CARNIVORES OF KARNATAKA: DISTRIBUTION AND SIGHT RECORDS1 H.N. KUMARA2,3 AND MEWA SINGH2,4 1Accepted November 2006 2 Biopsychology Laboratory, University of Mysore, Mysore 570 006, Karnataka, India. 3Email: [email protected] 4Email: [email protected] During a study from November 2001 to July 2004 on ecology and status of wild mammals in Karnataka, we sighted 143 animals belonging to 11 species of small carnivores of about 17 species that are expected to occur in the state of Karnataka. The sighted species included Leopard Cat, Rustyspotted Cat, Jungle Cat, Small Indian Civet, Asian Palm Civet, Brown Palm Civet, Common Mongoose, Ruddy Mongoose, Stripe-necked Mongoose and unidentified species of Otters. Malabar Civet, Fishing Cat, Brown Mongoose, Nilgiri Marten, and Ratel were not sighted during this study. The Western Ghats alone account for thirteen species of small carnivores of which six are endemic. The sighting of Rustyspotted Cat is the first report from Karnataka. Habitat loss and hunting are the major threats for the small carnivore survival in nature. The Small Indian Civet is exploited for commercial purpose. Hunting technique varies from guns to specially devised traps, and hunting of all the small carnivore species is common in the State. Key words: Felidae, Viverridae, Herpestidae, Mustelidae, Karnataka, threats INTRODUCTION (Mukherjee 1989; Mudappa 2001; Rajamani et al. 2003; Mukherjee et al. 2004). Other than these studies, most of the Mammals of the families Felidae, Viverridae, information on these animals comes from anecdotes or sight Herpestidae, Mustelidae and Procyonidae are generally records, which no doubt, have significantly contributed in called small carnivores.

  • Myths and Beliefs on Sacred Groves Among Kembatti Communities: a Case Study from Kodagu District, South-India
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF RESEARCH CULTURE SOCIETY ISSN: 2456-6683 Volume - 1, Issue - 10, Dec – 2017 UGC Approved Monthly, Peer-Reviewed, Refereed, Indexed Journal Impact Factor: 3.449 Publication Date: 31/12/2017 Myths and beliefs on sacred groves among Kembatti communities: A case study from Kodagu District, South-India Goutham A M.1, Annapurna M 2 1Research Scholar, Department of Studies in Anthropology, University of Mysore, Manasagangothri, Mysore, India 2Professor, Department of Studies in Anthropology(Rtd), University of Mysore, Manasagangothri, Mysore, India Email – [email protected] Abstract: Sacred groves are forest patches of pristine vegetation left untouched by the local inhabitants for centuries in the name of deities, related socio-cultural beliefs and taboos. Though the different scientists defined it from various points of view, the central idea or the theme of sacred grove remains the same. Conservation of natural resources through cultural and religious beliefs has been the practice of diverse communities in India, resulting in the occurrence of sacred groves all over the country. Though they are found in all bio-geographical realms of the country, maximum number of sacred groves is reported from Western Ghats, North East India and Central India. In Karnataka, sacred groves are known by many local names such as: Devarakadu, Kaan forest, Siddaravana, Nagabana, Bana etc. This paper gives detailed insight on sacred groves of kodagu District of Karnataka. Indigenous communities like Kembatti Holeyas and Kudiyas defined them as ‘tracts of virgin forest that were left untouched, harbour rich biodiversity, and are protected by the local people due to their cultural and religious beliefs and taboos that the deities reside in them and protect the villagers from different calamities’.

  • Assessing the Historical Forest Encroachment of Kodagu Region of Western Ghats, South India Using Remote Sensing and GIS
1 Assessing the historical forest Encroachment of Kodagu region of Western Ghats, South India using remote sensing and GIS G.R. Pramod Kumar*, A.M. Hemanjali, P. Ravikumar, R.K. Somashekar** and B.C. Nagaraja Department of Environmental Science, Bangalore University, Bangalore – 560056 Email: *pramodgowdagmail.com, **[email protected] Abstract The present study is focused on RS and GIS based assessment of forest encroachment in Kodagu district of Karnataka for the year 1990, 2000 and 2010 using Landsat TM/MSS for 1990 and 2000, and IRS LISS III for the year 2010. It’s located in the south-western part of Karnataka state, geographically stretched between 110 56' to120 52’ N and 750 22’ to760 12’ E, with a total area of 4101.21 Km2. The study revealed that the encroachment in reserve forest area accounts for 291.6 ha, 284.8 ha and 173.7 ha respectively for the year, 2010, 2000 and 1990. The highest encroachment is being noticed in Somavarpet, Kushalnagar ranges in Madikeri division and major encroachment is witnessed moist and dry deciduous, other plantation and mixed forest plantation. The major factors accelerating are expansion of agriculture, plantations, rapid growth of urbanization, development of utility services, population dependency of forest livelihood and poverty. Keywords: Western Ghats, Forest types, Encroachment, Zonal classification, Land use Land cover Introduction The forests are playing a vital role in regulating the climate and biodiversity conservation despite providing livelihood benefits to millions of people living in and around the forests. The forests of the Western Ghats region of peninsular India have undergone significant transformations over the past century (Ref).
