ORGAN RECITAL AT ST JOHN’S TOORAK Friday 29 October, 7.30pm at St Johns Church, Toorak, corner of Toorak and Orrong Roads. Roger Fisher, formerly organist of Chester Cathedral, will perform an organ recital at St Johns Church Toorak. Roger is an international recitalist who has recently returned from France and is about to tour Norway. His program will include Mendelssohn Sonata No 1, Guilmant Sonata No 1, as well as works by Lemare, Faulkes, Elgar and Gibbs. Tickets $25 and $20. RECITAL SERIES AT WEST BRUNSWICK The following recitals will be held at St Joseph’s Church, West Brunswick. (cnr Melville Road and Hope Street). CHORAL EVENSONG AT ST GEORGE'S MALVERN Sunday 7 November, 7.00pm at St George's Anglican Church, 296 Glenferrie Road, Malvern. A PLEASANT SUNDAY AFTERNOON RECITAL Sunday 14 November, 2.00pm at Wesley Uniting Church Box Hill (cnr Station and Oxford Streets). Presenting Bente Lancaster - soprano, Joseph Kinsela - baritone, Ryolo Mori (Wesley Church's new organist) and Rhys Boak - organ. Program includes works by Bach, Handel, Purcell, Caccini and more. The organ is the historic 1877 Father Willis organ. Admission $5.

PLEASANT SUNDAY AFTERNOON Sunday 14 November, 2.30 pm at St Andrews Uniting Church, 308 Barkly Street, Footscray. Come and sing some hymns from the Methodist, Presbyterian and Sankey hymn books. Guest organist Tim Baker will play parts of Widor's second Organ Symphony. Admission is free. Donations to the Royal Childrens' Hospital. (The previous Pleasant Sunday Afternoon was very successful, celebrating the 50th birthday of our organ. About 150 people attended, and over $1000 was raised for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.) ORGAN RECITAL AT ST PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL Wednesday 17 November, 9.45am at St Patrick's Cathedral, East Melbourne. Christopher Trikilis (Organ Scholar, St Patrick's Cathedral) will present a recital of Buxtehude, Bach, Mendelssohn and Lefebure-Wely. ADMISSION FREE.

ST AIDAN'S MUSIC SOCIETY'S FINAL CONCERT FOR 2004 Friday 19 November, 8.00pm at St Aidan's Uniting Church 17-21 Duggan Street, North Balwyn (Melway Map 46 F3). The concert will feature Bruce Steele (Organ) with guest artists, Peter Taylor (French Horn), Chris Rashleigh (Tenor) and Maurice Mathers (Baritone) in the Seventh Annual Organ Symphony and Singalong. The program will include beautiful organ works by Alexandre Guilmant (his dramatic 5th Sonata), Alfred Hollins and others as well as rarely heard music for horn and organ and vocal solos and duets. There will also be a sing-along for everyone with favourite old-time hymns, popular and patriotic songs. In fact it’s "Our Own Last Night of the Proms". RECITAL AT CAMBERWELL Sunday 21 November, 3.00pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Waterloo Street, Camberwell. There will be a FREE recital featuring the Choir and Organ of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Camberwell. Andrew Bainbridge, is the Director of Music / Organist. This recital celebrates the completion of restoration works to the church, including the organ façade. Works include Brahms How Lovely, Handel Zadok the Priest and Bonnet Variations de concert. 17th CENTURY ENGLAND Tuesday 23 November, 11.00am at St Michael's Uniting Church, 120 Collins Street, Melbourne. Final concert in the series. Consort Eclectus with soloist Genevieve Lacey (Recorder). Consort Eclectus is a new face in early music bringing the rich repertoire of the viol consort to Australian audiences. This is a flexible group specialising in English and Italian renaissance music, often joining forces with solo voices and vocal ensembles. Consort Eclectus has performed at the Melbourne Autumn Music Festival, the Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields Festival, toured Tasmania and recorded for ABC Classic FM. CD RELEASE – ‘33 ORGAN MINIATURES’ The Uniting Church Synod of Victoria and Tasmania Committee on Church Music has to released a CD, recorded and produced by Move Records. One of several aims is to present short, easy to moderately difficult pieces, which musicians (organ, piano and keyboard players) may find useful for worship, meditation, or to assist ministers who don’t always have access to a church musician. Works are from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century periods with eight countries represented. They include Brahms, Buxtehude, Corelli, Franck, Mozart and Nielsen from Europe; and Robert Ampt, Moneta Eagles, and AE Floyd from Australia. The players are all members of the Organ Sub-Committee: Ingrid Austin, Rhys Boak, Merrowyn Deacon, Colin Jenkins and John Maynard. The organ used for the recording is by the world famous TC Lewis, in St George’s Uniting Church, East St Kilda. Built in 1882, this instrument is noted for the rich harmonic development of the pipe-work. Contact Ph: 9251 5291.

3 CD RELEASE – SING TOGETHER 'ALLELUIA' Also available from Unichurch Books: A collection of 34 hymns from Sing Alleluia now included in Together in Song: Australian Hymn Book II. Directed by Wendy McLean. These hymns have been selected to provide a diverse range of words, musical styles and instrumental accompaniments, (but had not been included in the 2 CD set Together in Song - A Selection, commissioned by the AHB Company).

MUSIC FOR SALE An elderly member of the SOV has a large quantity of organ music which, in view of his age, he now wishes to sell. He is prepared to sell single items or several depending on what one finds useful. MUSIC FOR SALE For a period of about 20 years the Uniting Church in Australia Synod Committee on Church Music has held a collection of choral music. Much of the material came from the period when massed choirs sang for the opening of Synod, or from the music conferences conducted by the Committee during the 1980's, and other items have come from various sources. These anthems have been available for borrowing, but of recent years the demand has virtually dried up, and the Committee has decided to close the library, and make the contents available for purchase by any church or group who could make use of them. FINANCIAL REPORT 2003 / 2004 The treasurer presented the report on the finances to the Annual General Meeting held at the end of August.

In summary, the results for the year were Revenue $22,300 Expenses $18,100 Surplus $4,200

The major contributors to the surplus were interest on term deposits and exchange rate gains in relation to the payment to the UK for ‘Organist’s Review’ subscriptions.

The main asset of the Society is a $40,000 term deposit.

The overall financial position of the Society is very sound.
