The opposition batted .173 with 1 home run. A native of Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, Sierra permitted 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in his last 4 appearances (8.2 IP). The 23-year-old pitched score- less ball 4 consecutive assignments from April 15-26. Sierra allowed just 1 hit during this 8.0 inning stretch. Signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent in January 2016, Sierra went 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA in 29 appearances between Buies Creek and Quad Cities last year. He posted a 1.09 WHIP and allowed 4 home runs in 57.1 frames while averaging 9.4 strikeouts per 9 IP. Sierra pitched in 4 games for Sancti Spiritus of the Cuban National Series during the 2014-15 campaign at the age of 19. LITTLE HAVANA: With the addition of Sierra, the Hooks now boast 5 players on their roster who hail from Cuba. LHP Cionel Perez and RHP Yoanys Quiala join Sierra on the pitching staff. Corpus Christi’s Cuban position players include C Lorenzo Quintana and OF Yordan Alvarez. Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel, who also hails from Sancti Spiritus, opened the season with the Hooks on a rehab assignment, and hit .429 with 4 doubles and 3 RBIs in 5 games. ON THE OFFENSIVE: The Hooks secured their 6th series victory of the season by notching 32 runs on 50 hits over the course of the 4-game set with Midland. A total of 5 Hooks notched multi-hit performances Sunday, with 4 players driving in 2 runs. Cor- pus Christi has scored 8 runs or more in 13 of the 36 (36%) contests this season. The Hooks enter play today leading the Tex- as League in batting average (.291), runs (208), hits (367), doubles (80), steals (53), and on-base percentage (.369). Corpus Christi is averaging 5.9 runs per game. SWING AND A MISS: Hooks hurlers racked up 51 strikeouts in 36 innings during the 4-game series vs. Midland. SPEED THRILLS: Sunday marked the first time in 6 games Corpus Christi failed to record a stolen base. The Hooks have the most stolen bases in the Minor Leagues, swiping 53 bags in 71 attempts for a 75% success rate. OF Myles Straw continues to pace all MiLB base-stealers with 21 thefts. Straw, who was caught for just the 4th time yesterday afternoon, is on pace to rack up 82 steals this year, which would shatter Corpus Christi’s single-season standard of 54, achieved by Delino DeShields, Jr. in 2014. OF Stephen Wrenn ranks 2nd on the club and 3rd in the Texas League with 10 stolen bases. Adding in his time in the Carolina League, OF Josh Rojas has stolen 15 bases in 16 attempts. • A's News Clips, Tuesday, February 14, 2012 Oakland A's Sign Cuban
A’s News Clips, Tuesday, February 14, 2012 Oakland A's sign Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune The A's added another twist to their curious offseason Monday, agreeing to a four-year, $36 million contract with Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Cespedes -- hyped as having excellent power, good speed and a strong arm -- was considered the top hitter on the international market this winter. But he couldn't be signed until he established residency in the Dominican Republic after defecting from Cuba. Cespedes, 26, still needs to obtain a worker's visa and pass a physical before his deal is completed. His agent, Adam Katz, would not speculate on whether Cespedes will be in training camp when A's position players report Feb. 24. Pitchers and catchers report Saturday. The A's hope they finally have filled a need for a young power-hitting outfielder. The right-handed Cespedes hit 33 homers in 90 games last season in the Cuban National Series, Cuba's premier league. He hit .458 in six games during the 2009 World Baseball Classic. "This kid is a physical presence," A's player personnel director Billy Owens told MLB Network Radio. "We've actually scouted him the last four or five years in international competition, and he blows you away with sheer physicality, running speed, the power potential." A's general manager Billy Beane declined to comment on Cespedes. It is unknown whether the A's will thrust him into the opening day lineup or give him time in the minors. Their projected outfield, left to right, is Seth Smith, Coco Crisp and Josh Reddick.

  • The Role of Baseball in the Normalization of Cuba-US Relations
The Role of Baseball in the Normalization of Cuba-US Relations Daniel Añorve Añorve Universidad de Guanajuato Guanajuato, México Abstract: The December, 2014 announcement by Raúl Castro and President Barack Obama regarding the "thaw" of the US-Cuba diplomatic relations opens up new possibilities. Sport, specifically baseball, represents an area of opportunity for the rapprochement of both countries. MLB baseball is increasingly dependent on the inflow of foreign talent, especially on Latin American players. The status of the Cuban player is peculiar and it could normalize as a result of the full normalization of the diplomatic relations. This paper analyzes the economic incentives as well as the existing legal challenges in the US-Cuba interdependent relationship. Finally, the argument suggests that baseball could pave the way for a constructivist approach of other specific US-Cuba relationships, partially replacing the high politics that has dominated the bilateral relationship for more than five decades. Keywods: U.S.-Cuba Diplomatic Relations, Baseball Diplomacy, Constructivism Introduction Different interpretations can be made around the December 17, 2014 announcement made by President Barack Obama’s and Raúl Catro’s announcement, in which they communicated their intention to normalize and re-establish diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States of America. This paper begins with an attempt to explain, theoretically, the thawing of the bilateral US-Cuban relations. A second section discusses what is considered a wide range of bilateral relations between the two countries. It also explains the reason that leads the author to focus on baseball as "the" relationship of study. That relationship, as argued, requires an analysis of the different actors (and interests) involved in baseball.

  • Playing Major League Baseball Is the Culmination of a Long and Arduous Journey for Pitcher Ariel Miranda
DREAM REALIZED Playing Major League Baseball is the culmination of a long and arduous journey for pitcher Ariel Miranda. By Mike Gastineau For Ariel Miranda it was just one more hurdle. The 28-year-old Cuban joined the Mariners at the trade deadline last summer from the Orioles and became a reliable starting pitcher, posting a 5-2 record in 10 starts in August and September. He had every reason to believe he would be a starter for the team in 2017. But in baseball things seldom stay the same. The off- season additions of pitchers Drew Smyly and Yovani Gallardo, combined with the presence of Felix Her- nandez, Hisashi Iwakuma and James Paxton meant Miranda had to have a great spring to crack the team’s starting rotation. Instead, he struggled. There was talk of moving him to the bullpen, but eventually the Mariners decided they’d rather have him continue as a starter, so he was sent to Triple-A Tacoma. “He was really let down and disappoint- ed,” said pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. “He’s in his first spring with us and is com- peting for a job and didn’t really do anything wrong.
