  • How to Get from Dayton to Indianapolis by Way of Brooklyn, Boston, New York, Dallas, Hershey and Baltimore
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 17, No. 5 (1995) HOW TO GET FROM DAYTON TO INDIANAPOLIS BY WAY OF BROOKLYN, BOSTON, NEW YORK, DALLAS, HERSHEY AND BALTIMORE By Bob Carroll Originally published in Ragtyme Sports Once upon a time -- well, in March of 1995, to be exact -- Ragtyme Sports published Rick Hines' story on Y.A. Tittle, one of my all-time favorite bald quarterbacks. Maybe I enjoyed reminiscing about Y.A. too much because I read right past an error in the article without noticing it, an error that has since given rise to a series of letter-to-the-editor corrections that may have simply confused the issue further. To remind everybody, what Rick wrote was "... the [Baltimore] Colts were one of four AAFC teams taken in by the NFL. The other teams from the defunct AAFC to merge with the NFL were the [Cleveland] Browns, New York Yankees and San Francisco 49ers." The question seems simple enough: which teams and how many of them from the old All-America Football Conference (1946-1949) were taken into the the National Football League in 1950? What Rick wrote was wrong. But also it was sort of right, as I will explain later. Eric Minde, a reader who knows his AAFC potatoes (as my sainted grandpa used to say}, jumped all over Rick. In Issue 4, Eric said: "... the article about Y.A. Tittle identifies the New York Yankees as an AAFC team that transferred to the NFL -- this is also wrong! The New York Yankees folded with the AAFC -- it was the Boston Yanks already in the NFL before the AAFC came into existence that became the New York Bulldogs, then later renamed the New York Yanks." This is right as far as it goes.

  • THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 15, No. 3 (1993)
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 15, No. 3 (1993) IN THE BEGINNING Famous (or forgotten) firsts for every NFL franchise By Tod Maher The following is a comprehensive listing of various first games played by every member, past and present, of the National Football League; its predecessor, the American Professional Football Association; and the American Football League, which merged with the NFL in 1970. Each team's first game ever, first league game, first home league game, first league win and first playoff game are listed. In some cases, one game fills more than one category. A few historical notes are also included. When first ever is in italics, that means it's the earliest known game for that team, but there are earlier games that aren't documented yet. The years of a team's APFA / NFL membership are given in parenthesis, as are the scores of the games involved. AKRON PROS / INDIANS (1920-25 / 26) First ever, Oct. 3, 1920, vs Wheeling Stogies (43-0; first league, home, and win, Oct. 10, 1920, vs Columbus Panhandles (37-0). ATLANTA FALCONS (1966-) First ever, Aug. 1, 1966, vs Philadelphia Eagles (7-9); first league, home, Sept. 11, 1966, vs Los Angeles Rams (14-19); first win, Nov. 20, 1966, at New York Giants (27-16); first playoff, Dec. 24, 1978, vs Philadelphia Eagles (14-13). BALTIMORE COLTS (1950) The Colts were members of the rival All-America Football Conference, 1947-49. First ever, Aug. 22, 1947, vs Buffalo Bisons at Hershey, Pa. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE 280 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10017 (212) 450-2000 * FAX (212) 681-7573 WWW.NFLMedia.com Joe Browne, Executive Vice President-Communications Greg Aiello, Vice President-Public Relations FOR USE AS DESIRED NFL-33 6/8/06 FOR NFL ROOKIES, THE REAL FATHER’S DAY COMES THIS SEPTEMBER In the NFL, you could say there are two Father’s Days. There’s this June 18 when NFL players will get Pop something nice like a new DVD player or perhaps dinner at his favorite steak place. But the real Father’s Day present from five NFL rookies will be unwrapped on September 7, 10-11 -- Kickoff 2006 Weekend. At that time, they’ll give dad a gift only 159 sons have presented before -- following in his footsteps as NFL players. Dallas Cowboys linebacker BOBBY CARPENTER is one of those rookies. When he takes the field against Jacksonville on Kickoff Sunday on September 10, it will be the payoff for all the hard work and dedication instilled in him by his father ROB, a 10-year NFL running back for the Houston Oilers (1977-81), New York Giants (1981-85) and Los Angeles Rams (1986). Rob Carpenter ingrained those traits in his son early, on and off the football field. At an age where the internet, cable TV and cell phones are the norm in households across America, the elder Carpenter would not permit such “distractions” under his roof. This low-tech upbringing helped mold Bobby – an Ohio State graduate (BS, Economics) -- into the type of prospect NFL coaches and scouts love: a versatile, hard-working athlete who is physically and mentally mature.
