Dear Disciples of Jesus,

Fall is one of my favorite seasons. The leaves turn splendid colors, and the air turns crisp. Flowers have gone to seed in preparation for another season of growth and life and fruitfulness. Crops have been harvested and fields have been plowed under, and a time for waiting will soon begin. Clocks will be turned back to “save some day- light”, and with the advent of longer nights and shorter days, we slow down just a bit, rest some, and prepare for – what exactly?

Digging deeper into Scripture gives us a great clue. The Word of God is full of passages that talk about thanksgiv- ing, but Ephesians 5:20 says it best when Paul says we should be “…giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Thankfulness was central to Paul’s entire ministry. It permeates his writings. In Colossians 1:11-12 he writes, “May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father…” And to the Thessalonians he writes, “Rejoice al- ways, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess. 5:16-18).

And he practices what he preaches, beginning most of his letters with words of thanks. “I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you.” (Rom. 1:8) “I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Cor. 1:4) “I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my pray- ers.” (Eph. 1:16)

Paul understands thankfulness as THE virtue that characterizes the Christian faith. He says it isn’t pride or greed or lust, but ungratefulness that has caused so much confusion and despair in their lives. “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Rom. 1:21)

Paul’s thanksgiving in Ephesians isn’t some silver-lining, cup is half-full, thanksgiving that depends solely on your will power to keep it up. Paul’s thanks is a “giving thanks always and for everything.” But the truth of the matter is, there are days when we just don’t have the energy to count our blessings. There are stretches of time when we’d like to be thankful, really we would, but frankly, we just don’t give a rip. Be thankful always? Is he kidding? Give thanks when I wake up, even if I’m not a morning person? (you woke up didn’t ya?) Give thanks when you’re on your way to a job you despise? (you have a job, don’t ya?). Give thanks for everything? Even for my spouse, or kids, or roommates when they are driving me crazy? (you have loved ones to do just that, don’t ya?) Thankful al- ways and for everything? That would take a miracle! Which is why he adds “…in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ…” Because it sums up our Christian life perfectly.

To give thanks in the name of Jesus Christ recognizes that we simply cannot thank God in a manner worthy of His love. To give thanks in the name of Jesus means not only to say thanks, but more importantly to live it. He is the ground of our thanksgiving. He is the reason all creation shouts for joy. (Psalm 65)

May this season of gratitude be rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ, so that we can always and for everything give thanks.

Looking forward in Faith,

Pastor Patti

St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church sponsors Boy Scout Troop 392 founded on May 1, 1950 and is a multi-denominational troop. Our membership is made up of youth from all around the Grove City and Southwestern Columbus metro area. We welcome any boy 11 through 17 or age 10 if completed the 5th grade or has completed the Arrow of Light. We are part of the Ohio Valley District in the Simon Kenton Council (www.skcscouts.org). BSA Troop 392 is a growing, boy-led troop. The primary focus of the troop is to work on scouting advancement through Merit Badges while having tons of fun at the same time. We do a lot of camping, hiking, and other outdoor events. The boys are very active in local and other Council activities. They assist the community with many local service projects. This fall they cleaned the section of Republican Run Creek that flows behind our church. The scouts managed to remove about 15 bags of trash along with 2 tires, a large metal pot and part of a crock pot, and a 5 gallon bucket that had concrete in it. Wow! Interested youth and parents are always welcome and invited to visit during our meetings. Due to our varied programs and activities, meeting times and locations could change from time to time. Our meetings are held on Tuesday nights year-round from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Mexico Musings… About two years ago, my mom and I made the decision that we wanted to go on the Mexico Mission Trip. So we started going to the beginning meetings where we learned about the trip. We talked lots about what kind of things we would be doing on the trip and how to do those things. After four meetings of twelve hours of training, it was time for the trip. On Sunday, July 19th, we flew to San Diego. We stayed two nights there. Every night we did devotions to prepare our hearts. I loved this time of day. We would write down things like where we saw God and something that impacted our day. Let’s move onto my favorite part of the trip. Finally we got to camp on Sunday evening, spent the night, and the kids came Monday morning. I was assigned three niños: Victor, Alejandro, and Gabriel. They were all very shy at first. It is very sad; they just don’t know who to trust in their lives. It’s crazy to think about. But all the kids came out of their shells. Victor was the lover of the group. He was always giving hugs that filled your heart. Alejandro, on the other hand, was a fun, outgoing, crazy type of guy. Gabriel was an active guy who loved to play. These kids changed my life; and not just by hanging out with them. When you change your lifestyle for a full week, it makes you think a lot more. I’m a very picky eater and I personally didn’t like the food. But for the kids, any food was good food. I started to reflect on the little things like that. We aren’t anything special; we are the same as the niños, but they are grateful for everything they get. We also had work days where we built things, dug holes, planted trees and cacti, took down fences, etc. In the United States, we would look at this camp and think that it was out-of-date. Parents would look at the playground and think that it would be unsafe for their kids. But my niños loved every bit of it. I could see God in all of their hearts. God showed me the path that I needed to follow. It was truly a great experience. It was very sad to say my goodbyes, but I now know that I can spread God’s love in many ways. Philippians 4: 4-5 “Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again, rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Re- member the Lord is coming soon.” David Haack

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD St John’s Evangelical Church has partnered with Samaritan’s Purse again this year to participate in Operation Christmas Child (OCC). OCC demonstrates God’s love to hurting children in a tangible way by partnering with churches worldwide to deliver gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of Jesus Christ.

An OCC volunteer in Haiti writes: “One of the greatest testimonies we have is the evangelism of 65 children. These kids are a few of a wide number of other children who have never heard of Jesus in this area. Through OCC, all 65 received shoebox gifts and even more attended the 12 lessons of The Greatest Journey. Fifty graduated. All of these, along with several parents, will continue to hear the Gospel with services eve- ry Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Monday night. OCC makes a great impact and can be a means of transformation and change in the area.”

Here is how you can participate: Get a prepared shoe box from the church entrance or Link. The instructions for packing your box are included. Fill your box with some of the recommended gift items. Return your filled shoe box to the church entrance or Link by November 10.

Suggested gift items: small cars, balls, dolls, new short-sleeved shirts (no writing), small flashlight with batteries, soap AND plastic covered soap dish, toothbrush in a toothbrush holder, pencils, erasers, colored pencils, pens.

For those who are unable to pack a shoe box, please consider supporting this worthy cause by donating monetarily or with gift items. 100% of the donations will be allocated to the operation. Donation drop-off locations are also found in the church entrance and Link. Please contact Melissa Butsko for any questions 614.205.3239.

“Pack your shoe box with love, send it with prayer and share the Good News of Jesus Christ with a hurting child. That’s the power of a simple gift.” Franklin Graham, President, Samaritan's Purse

BEACONS and QUILTERS NEWS . Thanks to you, our collection of candy for the Christmas bags is growing. You may do- nate any leftover, wrapped Halloween candy. We need at least two tables full of candy to fill the 100 Christmas bags our church donates to the Champion LSS Food Pantry. We still need sturdy combs to add to the bags. Please place your donation in the Beacons-Quilters’ cabinet in the Link. Thanks for donating the 100 boxes of crayons and small stuffed toys. The bags will be filled and delivered on December 10, 2019. The Christmas bags will be given to children as a gift of Christian love and compassion. The Grove City Family Dentistry on Columbus Street once again generously donated 100 toothbrushes and 100 toothpaste tubes for the Christmas bags. We thank them for their concern for the needy children. We thank Jane Stenerson for donating her collection of 70 beloved Beanie Babies for the bags. We know the children will be pleased to receive them. The Mitten Trees will once again be set up for you to help decorate with warm items for the needy. With downsizing, the Beacons asked the youth of the church to take over and lead this ministry. Ellen Previts bravely took leadership of this service project. Help warm cold hands, heads and feet by bringing in mittens, gloves, warm hats, ear muffs, leg warmers, scarves, socks and more. On November 10, 2019, a mitten tree will be placed in the north entrance of the church and a second one in the Link. Please decorate the trees with your donations. OWLS EVENT – NOVEMBER 15, 2019 When you were a child did you like to go ice skating on the neighbor’s pond? Or maybe a “real” ice rink? Does it bring back good memories of your childhood? Well, even if you were not fortunate enough to have en- joyed ice skating as a child, we hope you will join us at our November 15th meeting to hear Russ Herner share his stories about the history of ice skates. Over the years Russ has collected over 300 pair of skates! You might remember Russ from a previous visit to the OWLS before to share his book “Cathedrals of Europe” with us. Friends, members and guests are always welcome!!!

Historians generally agree that ice skating, what we also today call figure skating, originated in Europe several millennia ago. Archaeologists have been discovering ice skates made from bone throughout Northern Europe and Russia for years, leading scientists to believe that this method of transport was at one point not so much an activity as a necessity. A pair pulled from the bottom of a lake in Switzerland, dated back to about 3000 B.C., are considered to be one of the oldest skates ever found. They are made from the leg bones of large animals, with holes bored into each end of the bone into which leather straps were inserted and used to tie the skates to the foot. It is interesting to note that the old Dutch word for skate is schenkel, which means "leg bone." However, a 2008 study of Northern European geography and terrain concluded that ice skates likely appeared first in Fin- land over 4000 years ago. Come join us and hear much more!

Please try to arrive around 11:15 am - this will give the committee time to finish their preparations for the potluck lunch. Fried chicken, meat loaf, iced tea, coffee and lemonade will be provided but you are asked to bring a covered dish to share. Our meeting starts at 11:30 with announcements. The program will follow lunch.

Reservations are required. Please use the salmon insert to make your reservation or call the church office. If you make a reservation and your plans change (even the morning of the event) please call either Bonnie Swanson (614-562-8002) or the church office (614-875-2314). Invite a friend! Hope to see you there!

PLAN AHEAD. Bereaved individuals who experience the most difficulty with the holiday season are those who have given little thought to the challenges they will encounter. Consider ahead of time what may be expected of you, both socially and emotionally, as well as your own preferences.

ACCEPT YOUR LIMITATIONS. Grief consumes most of our available energy no matter what the sea- son. The holidays place additional demands on your time and emotions. Plan to lower your expectations to accommodate current needs.

MAKE CHANGES. Your circumstances have changed. Expect to make necessary alterations in holiday plans to accommodate those changes. Consider changing your surroundings, rituals and/or traditions to diminish stress. Serve notice on family and friends that this year things may be somewhat different.

TRIM DOWN TO ESSENTIALS. Limit social and family commitments to suit your available energy. Shop early or use catalog sales. Re-evaluate priorities and for-go unnecessary activities and obligation.

ASK FOR AND ACCEPT HELP. Accept offers for assistance with holiday shopping, decorating, clean- ing, cooking, etc. Chances are loved ones are looking for ways to lessen your burden at this time of year. Allow those who care about you to offer their support in concrete ways.

INFORM OTHERS OF YOUR NEEDS. Give family and friends the tools they need to help you through the holidays. Be specific with them about your preferences and desires, and keep them up-to-date when those needs change.

BUILD IN FLEXIBILITY. Learn to “play it by ear.” There is no concrete formula for learning to deal with loss. You are the foremost authority on what is best for you, and your needs may legitimately change from day to day. Accept the fluctuations that must occur when walking in unknown territory. And learn to take each moment as it comes.

GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION “TO BE”. Allow breathing space and expect fluctuations in mood and perspective. The bereaved work overtime. Not only is life more complicated but all energy is siphoned into mental and emotional resolution. Grieving is nature’s way of healing the mind and heart from the greatest injury of all. Allow yourself the privilege of limping until your wounds have healed and you can learn to run again.
