It also houses le Gros Bourdon, is the largest bell on the continent. The second church on our itinerary is St. Joseph's Oratory, a major site of Roman Catholic pilgrimage and worship. The dome is the world's second largest, after St. Peter's in Rome, and religious pilgrims sometimes climb the steps in the middle, praying at every step. For the winter months (Nov - Apr), the tour will take us to Howe Caverns in Upstate NY. Here, our journey will wind us through limestone corridors, cavernous galleries, and under massive boulders to a subterranean riverbed carved over countless millennia. Deep in the cave, solid rock appears fluid: creating strange formations, flowing sheets and dripping stalactites. Mysterious grottos lead off into distant, unexplored passages path twists and turns ever downward to the glassy surface of an underground lake that trails off into the absolute darkness of the cave's Eastern Terminus. It is about class, consumption and culture; it is also about food and identity. In the mid-nineteenth century, restaurants served French food prepared by European chefs to elite Americans with aristocratic pretensions. “Turning the Tables” explores the subsequent transformation of aristocratic restaurants into public spaces where the middle classes could feel comfortable dining. Digging deeply into the changes restaurants underwent at the turn of the century, I argue that the struggles over restaurant culture—the battles over the French-language menu, the scientific eating movement, the celebration of cosmopolitan cuisines, the growing acceptance of unescorted women diners, the failed attempts to eliminate tipping—offer evidence that the urban middle class would play a central role in the construction of twentieth-century American culture.

  • WALDORF-ASTORIA HOTEL, 301-319 Park Avenue (A/K/A 538-556 Lexington Avenue), Borough of Manhattan
Landmarks Preservation Commission January 5, 1993; Designation List 248 LP-1812 WALDORF-ASTORIA HOTEL, 301-319 Park Avenue (a/k/a 538-556 Lexington Avenue), Borough of Manhattan. Built 1929-31; architects Schultze & Weaver (Lloyd Morgan, designer). Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1304, Lot 1. On September 11, 1990, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 12). The hearing was continued to December 11, 1990 (Item No. 2). Both hearings were duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Three witnesses spoke in favor of designation; two letters were received in support of designation. There were no speakers against the proposed designation. The owners have subsequently indicated that they support the proposed designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Summary The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and Towers, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary on Park Avenue, was built in 1929-31 to be the second home of an internationally known, hundred-year-old New York establishment. Unlike its palatial predecessor on Fifth Avenue at 34th Street, the new Waldorf combined a transient hotel and a related but separate residential tower into a 625-foot-high skyscraper, one of the city's tallest at the time, located in the major new skyscraper office building district developing around Park Avenue near Grand Central Terminal. The architect of the hotel and towers, Lloyd Morgan of the firm of Schultze & Weaver, designed the complex in a sedate but handsome version of the modernistic style now generally referred to as Art Deco, adapting the skyscraper form and an up-to-date look to a conservative traditional establishment.

1 Richard J Lee Honor Senior Thesis 04/15/2011 Prof. Isenberg Manhattan’s Grand Hotels as the “Transient City” Development of Midtown 1890’s-1960’s E.B White’s foreword to Here is New York, self-reflects the struggle to accurately present New York as “ the reader will certain observations no longer true of the city”, attributing them as effected by the “passage of time and the swing of the pendulum”. 1 In an effort to mentally comprehend the city, White identifies three distinctive and simultaneously existing New York Cities, each created from the perspective and actions of different populations. The first New York belongs to its natives who find it easier to accept the city’s scope and chaos. The second New York belongs to the commuting masses that “devour it like locusts each day and are spat out each night”. The third New York belongs to its infinite settlers who preemptively declare it their “city of final destination”. These pioneers from all over the world mentally and physically engage in urban (re)-creation, transforming their restlessness into a source for own and their city’s vitality. The term transient is a combination of people behind the drives and impulses behind the second and third New York Cities. He or she is the city’s other, non-native, or native in process whose narrative is reflective of the city’s cultural and economic majesty. The term transient city is a reference to the city’s maze of burgeoning terminals, stops, transportation lines, 1 White, E. B.. Here is New York .
