Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery's Evolution Into an International Journal Based on Journal Metrics Sun Huh, MD Review Article Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery 2016;8:127-132 • http://dx.doi.org/10.4055/cios.2016.8.2.127 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery's Evolution into an International Journal Based on Journal Metrics Sun Huh, MD Department of Parasitology and Institute of Medical Education, Hallym University College of Medicine, Chuncheon, Korea This article is aimed at providing evidence of increased international recognition of Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery (CiOS) based on journal metrics. Since 7 years have passed since its launch in 2009, it is time to reflect on the journal’s efforts to be recognized as a top-notch journal. The following journal metrics were analyzed from the journal’s homepage and Web of Science Core Collec- tion database: number of citable and noncitable articles; number of original articles supported by grants; editorial board members’ countries; authors’ countries; citing authors’ countries; source titles of citing articles; impact factor; total citations; comparison of impact factor with 3 Science Citation Index Expanded journals; and Hirsch index (H-index). Of the total 392 articles, 378 were cit- able articles (96.4%). Of the total 282 original articles, 52 (18.4%) were supported by research grants. The editorial board members were from 13 countries. Authors were from 20 countries. The number of countries of citing authors was 66. The number of source titles of citing articles was more than 100. The total citations of CiOS have increased from 0 in 2009 to 374 in 2015. The impact factors without self-citations of CiOS were the greatest among 4 Asian journals in 2013 and 2014. The 2015 impact factor was cal- culated as 0.79 in January 2016. The H-index was 13. CiOS can be considered to have reached the level of top-notch journal in the orthopedic field based on journal metrics. The inclusion of the journal in PubMed Central appears to have increased international relevance of the journal. Li et al. Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research (2019) 14:227 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13018-019-1247-1 RESEARCHARTICLE Open Access A bibliometric analysis of classic publications in web of science category of orthopedics Yunzhu Li1†, Gang Xu2†, Xiao Long1,4* and Yuh-Shan Ho3* Abstract Background: The past century has witnessed the rapid development of operation technique, surgical instruments, and knowledge of the diseases in orthopedics. In the academic history, a number of classic papers boosted the advancement for surgery. In this paper, we performed a bibliometric analysis, aiming to determine the most influential studies within the field. Methods: Articles were searched from the publication year of 1900 to 2016 according to the Science Citation Index Expanded database of the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection database. Two citation indicators TCyear and Cyear were employed to characterize the classic articles and the articles were identified and analyzed. Results: A total of 30 classic articles with TC2016 ≥ 1000 in Web of Science category of orthopedics were identified, all written in English between 1961 and 2007 by nine countries. The minimal value of TC2016 was 1010; the maximum 3570; and the average 1591. Thirty classic articles were published in eight journals that were listed in the Web of Science category of orthopedics in 2016, and in two other orthopedics journals that were no longer tracked by Web of Science category of orthopedics as of 2016. Among the top 10 cited articles in both TC2016 and C2016, five articles barely received attention in the first few years after their publication, while they became cited more and more frequently in the last decade.

No study has evaluated the impact of open access orthopaedic journals or their associated risks and benefits to academic publishing and patient care. Methods: This study evaluated open access orthopaedic journals utilizing various databases including the Directly of Open Access Journals (www.DOAJ.org), PubMed Central (www.PubMed.org), Google search queries and recent articles, stories, and editorials on the topic of open access journalism. All orthopaedic surgery journals were recorded, as well as associated characteristics including publisher, year of publication, articles and issues per year, impact factor, and potential risk of a “predatory” publisher. Data were summarized and presented. Results: Our search yielded a total of 42 orthopaedic open access journals in the English language from 30 different publishers. In total, there were nearly 13,000 articles available from these journals available without a license or subscription. Of the 42 journals, 13 (31%) were considered predatory or borderline publishers, and only one had a published impact factor (IF = 0.737). In contrast, 8 of the remaining 29 journals (28%) had a published impact factor with a mean value of 1.788 (range: 0.597-4.302).
