SISTERS IN HARMONY

CELEBRATION! Golden Jubilee – October 9:

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you.” -John 15:16-

With the grace of God, the seven Sisters lived faithfully their religious vows and they consecrated themselves again to God during the seven o’clock Eucharistic Mass praying that they live their rest of lives with love of the Lord. Father Thomas Timpte, OSB of guided the golden jubilee retreat; and in the midst of 200 Sisters, Father Thomas presided the Eucharistic Mass

and Father Yunil Lee, OSB concelebrated the Mass. After the Mass, all the Sisters joined the celebration breakfast followed by congratulatory events: 5-6 group of Sisters sang beautiful songs, Junior Sisters wearing all kinds of costumes danced merrily with the music “What’s wrong with my age”, novices sang songs and danced joyfully, and postulants danced excitingly and read congratulatory address with their whole hearts. Then, each one shared her thoughts of Golden Jubilee. In each Sister’s brief expression, we felt the long years of religious life with patience and fullness of God’s grace and blessing; and we all gave thanks to God!

The day of Golden Jubilee is the day to give gratitude to God for all His grace. The Scripture said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you.” (John 15:16) These words means that He made us our companions, the great gift of God that we can go this way. “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.” (Luke 10:2) This prayer of Jesus must be our prayer: for before God, we are not wise and learned but little children. Since God gave us good share, we should try to move forward to God the rest of our lives. As you get older, you get less work. Through personal prayer and holy readings, you must get closer to God. - Part of the Homily by Father Thomas Timpte, OSB -

Pilgrimage of Junior Sisters to Batty Sacred Place – October 28:

It was a little chilly, but God provided a sunny weather to the junior sisters to have a good pilgrimage to Batty Sacred Place. Batty located in a deep mountain valley served as a hub for inland traffic during the era of persecution. There were 15 villages in the region and since 1830, Yang-up Choi had been pastoring all over the country based on this region.

The junior sisters visited the first seminary built with a straw-thatched cottage and they all went into the cottage and prayed together. Then, guided by a sister, they looked around the First Seminary Building in Korea tombs of the martyrs. Going through the secret narrow passage, the junior sisters felt the scent and breath of the ancestors of the time when they were not hesitant to escape from persecution; and the time came, they gave their lives for God.

“HERE AM I. SEND ME!” (Isaiah 6:8)

Mission Experience at the Contemplative Monastery on the Mount of Olives, Jerusalem – October 21:

At that time, Mother Maoro Sye, Prioress General was a Prioress of Daegu Priory. She announced that the Mount of Olives Monastery, Jerusalem requested the help; and if any Sister who is healthy, able to communicate in English, not going around but help the community eagerly may apply for the mission. In the beginning, I was hesitant for I just returned from long years of overseas mission, however, since it is one-year term and I met the three requirements, I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Thus, I was on the way to the Monastery on Mount of Olives. I was told that I should help the olive farm, so I prepared lots of cotton gloves, arm warmers, and rubber gloves. However, I did more chores in the house than doing garden work; and until I returned, the rubber gloves became my most appreciated item.

The Contemplative Benedictine Sisters of Mount of Olives, Notre Dame of Calvary is from France; and in 1997, the monastery celebrated the 100th anniversary. The monastery looks down the panoramic view of Jerusalem; and it has four-acres of olive grove as well as lemon, grape, fig trees, etc. The church of the monastery is famous of beautiful Icons; and it has guest rooms for pilgrims, parlor, and gift shop. When I arrived, the community had seven members, however, this year in January and May, God called back two Sisters to heaven; therefore, at present, there are five members. The congregation, culture and language are differ to ours, however, since the community has the same root and follows the Rule of St. Benedict, that gave me comfort and unity and I was able to adjust to the liturgy and community life. It was not easy to pray in French seven times a day, and yet, singing Latin at daily Eucharistic Mass that connected Daegu Priory; and I adjusted well to daily schedule in praying and working under superior and rule.

Although the root is the same, and yet, the different branches, namely the contemplative and the missionary life brought inconvenience and difference, but I had to accept them. It came to my mind that the same people living together in same space for a long time as each one settle down in her own way, the attempt for renewal and change may be very difficult. Since our congregation is the International Missionary Benedictine Sisters, I realized that how it is important and great blessing they are to enjoy the diversity, openness, and inter-relationship. I was very grateful to our Founder, Father Andreas Amrhein who made possible to have contemplative life within the missionary activities; moreover, I was thankful to God for calling me to our congregation.

Before I was returning to Daegu Priory, we had the community meeting. I made suggestion to have a little different breakfast on Sundays and Feast Days. On next Sunday, I was surprised to see cheese and toaster on the table. The Sister prepared the table told me “we prepared them to make you happy”; and even now, her remarks make me to smile. During the 2019 North Korea-United States Hanoi Summit, the election of our Prioress General, and the election of Prioress of Daegu Priory the Sisters offered the Eucharistic Mass and posted issues and events on the bulletin and prayed for them. I sincerely grateful to the Sisters who told me that they are going to continue to pray for the Windhoek Priory and me. I hope and pray that one day, I have an occasion to visit and see them again! -Sr. Simon Lee, OSB-

THE INTERNATIONAL WEEKS OF ENCOUNTER (IWE)

The Experience of the International Weeks of Encounter (IWE) – September 18-October 28:

The 42 days of IWE started in September 18, 2019. The 22 Sisters were from 8 : Daegu, Manila, Nairobi, Ndanda, Peramiho, Seoul, Torres Novas, Windhoek, and the Generalate District: Jinja. The theme of the IWE was “We are different yet one”.

The apostles, martyrs, and saints lived in the Holy City in Rome! We read them in the Bible, saw directly the places that we saw in pictures, and we met them through our pilgrimage. As I was walking the roads that the apostles, martyrs, and saints walked, the thoughts came to my mind: What did the saints thought about coming and going these roads? How did they looked at the world? At present, what kinds of mind do they have as they are looking down from heaven? Moreover, I was thinking of them, I felt the love of their God!

We visited the place where St. Benedict lived in Rome. The place closed for a long time, however, since four years ago the Order of the Heralds of the Gospel from Brazil is taking care of the place; therefore, we were able to visit the place. To see the place, it was comparison with the Subiaco and especially the Montecassino when were well kept; and it was the occasion to take a fresh look our lived. Moreover, I was very happy to see the statue of our Lady of Fatima there; and I lighted a candle and offered it to our Lady praying for the Sisters working in Fatima Hospital and all the issues of the hospital as well as the employees. Wherever I went the holy places, I remembered and prayed the Sisters and I rather prayed more than when together.

After one-month program of various lectures and retreat given by general councilors in the Generalate, Rome, we headed to the Mother House, Tutzing, Germany. When I visited the Mother House, I felt the breath of our senior Sisters meeting the living history. The decorations of chapels of the Generalate and the Mother House and St. Ottilian made me to feel that we already lived long the theme “We are different yet one”. The tabernacle of the Generalate decorated with stones of each country; and the altar of the Mother House decorated with clay from each country and olive branches from Rome. The altar of St. Ottilian Monastery supported by the statues of the apostle of Germany St. Bonifacius, the guardian of St. Ottilien Monastery St. Ottilia, the first Korean-born priest St. Andrew Taegon Kim, and Ugandan martyr Kaloli Lwanga.

By seeing directly the places of our roots and lives of our Sisters, I met the living God. Sharing difficulties, anxieties, joys, and Sisters from 8

different countries, I realized that we are the same. The difference is not distinction or mistake, but it is trying to resemble Jesus; and I have felt abundant blessings through diversity.

Through various care and hospitality of the Generalate and the Mother House, I felt the love of God and it was precious time to be there. I would like to convey my sincere thanks to God, the Generalate and the Mother House and the community as well as the participants of IWE 2019! - Sr. Sapientia Park, OSB -
