I walked away from each one of these presentations with an unbelievable feeling of pride — these kids were phenomenal! Many never thought they would have an opportunity to attend college. Some overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles in their lives and still thought a college education was just a dream. Your efforts and commitment to our Show helped turn those dreams into reality for many of our recipients. Some may think it’s a cliché, but hard work and persistence really do pay off. There is no doubt that the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is helping to build the future of our fine city and this great state. Since I was a college graduate, single, broke, and living with my dad, I felt like a failure. It was one of the most depressing periods in my life but eventually I found the rodeo arena. I started riding bulls and for the first time in a long while, I felt like I was worthy. Rodeo is not like other sports. In most sports, the athlete shares the stage with many other people at the same time. In basketball, football, baseball, and track and field, there is never a time when a participant can be confident that every single spectator is watching nobody else but him. In rodeo, every competitor gets his or her moment in the sun.

  • Horse Bit Basics Basic Types
    Horse Bit Basics A bit is a type of horse tack used in equestrian activities, usually made of metal and is placed in the mouth of a horse and assists a rider/lunger in communicating with the animal. It rests in the mouth in a region there are no teeth. It is held on a horse's head by means of a bridle and has reins/side reins attached for use by a rider or lunger. A bit functions through the principle of negative reinforcement: the reduction or relaxation of pressure as reinforcement for a behavior. The rider/lunger applies pressure through the reins to the bit in the horse's mouth and the horse is reinforced or rewarded for the correct response by softer contact or a release or pressure. Basic types There are hundreds of design variations, but the basics are defined by the way in which they use or do not use leverage. They include: • Direct pressure bits without leverage: o Snaffle bit: Uses a bit ring at the bit mouthpiece to apply direct pressure on the bars, tongue and corner of the mouth. • Leverage bits: o Curb bit: A bit that uses a type of lever called a shank that puts pressure not only on the mouth, but also on the poll and chin groove. A bit consists of two basic components, the bit mouthpiece that goes inside the horse's mouth, and the bit rings of a snaffle bit or shanks of a curb bit, to which the bridle and reins attach. The mouthpiece is the first factor most people think of when assessing the severity and action of the bit.
