The Walkman is here Submitted by: Charles Communications Wednesday, 7 June 2000

CSony introduces first copyright protected networked audio player The Sony Memory Stick Walkman (NW-MS7), announced in London last year during Sony’s 20th anniversary of the Walkman Personal Stereo, is now available in the United Kingdom. The first copyright protected network audio player, the MS7 uses ATRAC3 compression and also supports MP3 and WAV files as well. The Memory Stick Walkman stores music on a compact ‘MagicGate Memory Stick’ (MG Memory Stick). Like its blue brother, the white MG Memory Stick is smaller than a stick of chewing gum but offers up to 120 minutes recording time and a robust copyright protection technology. In this way the Memory Stick Walkman facilitates the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) and is compliant with Electronic Music Distribution (EMD). The first product to respect music copyrights, special chips in the MagicGate Memory Stick and Walkman provide a protected environment for data transferred between the Memory Stick and the player. "The Memory Stick Walkman has been developed to support the rapidly emerging market for EMD services over digital networks like the Internet," said Lynsey Emberson, Product Manager for Personal Audio, Sony United Kingdom Limited. "In order for electronic music distribution to really expand, we need good content and a secure environment. The new Memory Stick Walkman allows you to download current MP3 sites but will also allow access to legitimate, secure sites being promised by major record labels such as BMG, Warner Music and later in the year." Weighing just 69 grams (including battery and Memory Stick), the MS7 is compact in size (37mm width, 96.3mm height, 19.2mm depth) and can easily fit in a shirt pocket. It has practically no moving parts and features an anti-skip function which means the Memory Stick Walkman is the ideal companion for travelling or exercising. Designed to meet SDMI requirements to safeguard copyright owned by artists, music producers, and record companies OpenMG Jukebox software comes supplied with the MS7. Installed on the PC, OpenMG Jukebox allows the user to make digital recordings from music CDs, as well as download MP3 and WAV files from the internet and convert to ATRAC3 -- ensuring easy playback on the Memory Stick Walkman. The Sony Memory Stick Walkman complements the , CD and MD Walkman products to offer a new way to enjoy music in the digital network era. The Sony NW-MS7 is available now for an expected street price of £299.
