Desdendants of Jan Gerritsen Decker by Karlyn Leslie Shedlowski

Generation No. 1

1. JAN GERRITSEN1 DECKER was born 1640 in Heerden, Gelderland, Holland1,2, and died 1717 in Port Jervis, Orange, NY3. He married GREITJEN HENDRICKS WESTERCAMP Mar 23, 1664 in Kingston, Ulster, NY3,4, daughter of HENDRICK WESTERCAMP and FEMMETJE ALBERTSE. She was born Oct 19, 1642 in New Amsterdam, New Netherlands, NY5,6, and died Aug 24, 1701 in Kingston, Ulster, NY7.

Notes for JAN GERRITSEN DECKER: The following is from The Decker Genealogy, Some Descendents of the Dutch Immigrants, Johannes Gerretsen Decker and Jan Broersen Decker, compiled by Benton Weaver Decker, Copyright 1980 by Benton Weaver Decker, Printed in the USA by Budget Book Manufacturing Company:

The date of the arrival of Jan Gerretsen Decker is arrival. We know that he came from Heerden, Gelderland, Holland, and married Grietjen Hendricks Westercamp, daughter of Hendrick Janse and Gemmetje Albertse. She was born in New Amsterdam in 1642 and was married in Esopus in 1664.

Jan Gerretsen took the name of Decker prior to 1685, but he used the name of Gerretsen several times thereafter. There were eight Gerretsens in the area at this time. Ours was born in Holland prior to 1640 and died in Port Jervis in 1717. He had settled in Rochester (Mombackus) but soon afterward, he moved south, down to Old Mine Road to Deerpark and into New Jersey.

The marriage records state that Grietjen Westercamp was of New Amsterdam in New Netherland, and both resided in Kingston.

Notes for GREITJEN HENDRICKS WESTERCAMP: According to the Decker Genealogy, page 1, it was stated the Grietjen Hendricks Westercamp, was neither a virgin nor a widow. A Grietjen Hendricks Westercamp with Pieter Jacobsen (miller) had baptized Pieter in 1662 (Kingston Baptismal Records #21). Grietjen was captured by the Indians in 1663. Pieter Jacobsen Sr. died in 1664.

2. GERRIET JANSE2 DECKER (JAN GERRITSEN1) was born Feb 14, 1665 in Baptism date; Kingston, NY; was from Esopus14. He married (1) GRIETJE MARGARET JANS DECKER Jan 20, 1685 in Banns date; Kingston, Ulster, NY15, daughter of JAN DECKER and HEYLTJE JACOBS. She was born Aug 31, 1664 in Baptised Date; Kingston, NY; was from Esopus16,17. He married (2) CHRISTINA PRUYER 170718.

Notes for GERRIET JANSE DECKER: Witnesses to Baptism were Hendrick Bosman, Markien Everingh, and Grietjen Hendricks (mother).

This is the first marriage between the two Decker families who were in the area but unrelated. Grietje (Margaret) Decker was the daughter of Jan Broersen Decker, while her husband was the son of Jan Gerretsen Decker.

Comments:

There were two Gerrit Jans Deckers marrying within a year of each other in Kingston. The first married Magdalena Willemz Schut and the second married Margriet Janz Decker. Neither grooms had been married before because their names were marked in the marriage records with "j.m." Gerrit and Magdalena and Gerrit and Grietje were having children at the same time, meaning they were two separate families.

The question remains who was the father of the Gerrit Jans Decker who married Grietje?

Jan and Magdalena had no children named Jan. Heyltje, or Willemtie baptized in the Kinston records. Their children were Jacob, Willem, Grietje (believe to have been named after Magdalena's mother, and Neeltje. While the above suggest that the Gerret married to Magdalena was Jan Broersen's son, it offers no further clues to prove it. However, a Willemtie, was the witness at their son, Jacob's, baptism.

The names and baptismal witnesses of Gerrit and Grietje's children offer no clues as they would have named their children after both sides of the family and members of both Decker families would have been baptismal witnesses. However, Gerret and Grietje did name their first three children, Jan, Heyltie, and Grietje. In the family of Jan Gerritsen, there was a son named Gerret but no daughter named Margriet or Grietje. In the family of Jan Broersen, there is a daughter named Grietje, as well as a son named Gaerleff (probably a misspelling, or mistranscription of Gerrett). As Grietje would not have married her own brother, it can be safely assumed that her husband, Gerrit, was the son of Jan Gerritsen, and she was the daughter of Jan Broersen, while her brother Gerrett/Gaerleff, was the one who married Magdalena Schut. In additon the Kingston baptismal records indicate that Jan Gerritsz Dekker and Barbara de WiTT had their son, Gerrit, baptized (baptism # 2404). Gerritsz in Dutch means the "oldest son." This substantiates the belief than Jan Gerritsz was the oldest son of Gerrit Jans Decker.

Notes for MARGARIET (GRIETJE) DECKER:

ANALYSIS OF THE WIFE OF THOMAS QUICK AND THE NAMES AND SPONSORS OF HIS CHILDREN

Various theories occur regarding the parentage of Margarit (commonly known as Grietge or Grietgen) Quick exist. The following analysis shows that the most likely candidates for her parents are Gerriet Jansen and Grietje (Margaret) Jans Decker.

Firstly, there were two Jacobus (Jacob) Deckers, in the previous generation, one who did not have a daughter Margriet, and the other who did. However, this Margariet would have been about 13 years of age, when she married Thomas Quick in 1713. This rules out both Jacob's as potential fathers.

There were also 3 other Decker families who had daughters named Grietje (Margriet). These were Gerrit and Margriet/Grietje Decker, Gerrit and Magdalena Schut, and Hermanus and Rachel de la Montagne.

The following list of Thomas and Grietje (Margariet)'s children shows that none were named Gerrit, Hermanus, or Rachel. However, their were children named Margariet and Lena (for Magdalena).

The best way to analyze the possible correct parents is to discover the relationships of the baptismal sponsors and the locations at which the children were born, versus where their parents lived.

Sponsors: Thomas Quick and Margerth, Suster and Broeder (Sister and Brother). Since both the surname of the father and the baptized son were Everigame, this means that Thomas, and Margareth were siblings to Anna Quick.

Aen or Ann Quick Baptized: 19 May, 1733, Mennisink, NJ Source: #4624, Kingston, NY Sponsors: Jacobus Kettebeck and Antje Rosencrans. Named from Tom Quick’s mother, Ann.

The presence of Titjen Decker, Jan va Kampen, Anthony Westbroek and Orseltjen Westbrook suggests a relationship with the Jan Broersen Decker family. Lack of relatives from Hemanus and Rachel, plus no naming conventions from this couple rule them out.

The above information strengthens the fact that Gerrit Jansen Decker, and Grietje Margariet Decker were the parents of Thomas Quick's wife. Consider for example, the fact that Grietje Margariet Decker was a daughter of Jan Broersen Decker and her sister, Tiejen Decker and her husband, were Sponsors at the baptism of Thomas and Margariet's (Grietje) second son, Jacobus. The other sponsors were her close family members to Margariet (Grietje).

An additional clue is that Gerritt Decker who married Magdalena Schut resided in Marmur (Marbletown) at the time of his marriage. The other Gerrit, who married Grietje Margariet Decker, lived in Mombaccus (Rochester, NY) at the time of his marriage, while his wife, Grietje Margariet, was born in Rochester, but lived in Marbletown at the time of her marriage. Since Thomas Quick's wife was born in Rochester, she would most likely be the daughter of Gerritt Jan Decker and Margaret Jans Decker, who also lived in Rochester.

Lastly, Geertje Decker was present at the baptism of Margarita Quick in 1718. Geertje (Gertrude) was the daughter of Hendrick Dekker. Hendrick was the brother of Gerret Janszen Decker, father of Margaret (Grietje) Decker, Thomas Quick's wife.

Notes for THOMAS QUICK: HISTORY ON THOMAS QUICK: Thomas Quick was the son of Dirck Quick and Hanna Jans Hodge. On 2 Nov. 1702, Thomas signed a contract to become an apprentice to John King, a shipwright, for several years. The agreement included that Thomas be taught reading, writing and math, and would receive a number of tools at the end of the seven years.

"Indenture of Thomas Quick, son of Dirk Quick, deceased, with the consent of his brother-in-law, Heus and Helegant de Key, his aunt, to John King, Ship wright, for seven years from 1st November 1702. Apprentice to be taught to read, write, and cypher, and at the expiration of the term, to receive one axe, one adz, one maul, one saw, one chisel, and one mallet." Signed on 2nd Nov. 1702, by Thomas Quick.

Thomas married Margriet Decker 22 December 1713 in Kingston, Ulster, New York. Margriet was baptized on 1 December 1695 in Kingston, Ulster, New York. She is assumed to be the daughter of Gerrit Jans Decker and Grietje Jans Decker. (Hoes, Rosewell Randall (comp.), Baptismal and Marriage Registers of the Old Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster Co., NY. Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1997 (originally published by De Vinne Press (New York), 1891.)

Thomas and Margariet settled in Shippekonk, Sussex, New Jersey and later came to what would become Milford, Pike Co., PA, near the Delaware River. Thomas was said to had built some of the earliest mills in

both of these places.

An early mill built by Thomas Quick, was in the Millville area, before he moved to Pennsylvania. Source: Batko, A. C., History of Montague, NJ, http://www.montaguenj.org/march/history.htim Compiled: 1998.

Milford was known as a milling center early in its history. The town's name was not chosen haphazardly, for "Mill-ford" was descriptive. Thomas Quick, Sr., the earliest known settler, built a saw and grist mill across the town on the Vandermark Creek in 1740. Per Vernon Leslie Thomas Quick was killed by the Indians in Upper Smithfield, PA (now Pike Co, near Bushkill or Milford).

Thomas joined Captain John Van Etten's First Company on 12 Jan 1756, during the French and Indian War. He died the next month near the Delaware River in February, 1756. According to the legend, Thomas, his son Tom, and a son-in-law (whom Calvin Ennes believed to be William Ennes, but others believed to be Solomon Decker:, despite the ongoing war, went to the river and were ambushed by a group of Native Americans. Thomas was killed, but the other two escaped. Thomas died intestate and administration of his estate was granted to William Ennes, Benjamin Shoemaker, and James Hyndshar on 9 Mar 1756. A copy of the Administrative Proceedings are in the files of Karlyn Leslie Shedlowski. Source: Old Dutch Records of the Machackemech and Menissinck Churches, Rev. JB Ten Eyck, Revised and Annotated by WH Nearpass, Port Jervis Gazette, 1899.

Thomas Quick joined Capt. John Van Etten's First Co. 12 Jan, 1756, and was one of the signers of the following agreement: "We the subscribers, do hereby engage ourselves to serve as soldiers in His Majesty's service under the command of Capt. John Van Etten for the space of one month and whosoever of us shall get drunk, desert, or prove cowardly in time of action, or disobedient to our officers, shall forfeit his pay. This agreement was made in consideration of being allowed at the rate of Six Dollars per month wages. One Dollar for the use of a gun and blanket to each man, who furnish himself with them, and the Provisions and Rum mentioned in a paper hereunto annexed. "This agreement was signed by all of the men, one being Thomas Quick whose name was scratched off and a note added: "Killed by Indians in February 1756. Another story about Thomas Quick and his early activities is published in "Old Dutch Records of the Machackemech, and Menissinck Churches, by Rev. J. B. Ten Eyck, Port Jervis Gazette, 1899, page 59:

"Thomas Quick and Margriet Decker were married Dec. 22, 1719. He was born in New York City and she at Rochester, Ulster County. They removed from the latter place to Metshippekonk, also know as Shippekonk, in Montague, NJ, on the east side of the Delaware River, opposite Milford, PA. He established a mill on the creek at that place, and about 1734-34 disposed of the property. He afterward erected a grist mill at Milford, PA, and is said to have been the pioneer settler of the latter place. Thomas Quick was killed by the Indians during the French and Indian War, and his son vowed vengeance, and the rest of his life was devoted to hunting, trapping, and the killing of Indians."

Notes for LANA (LENA) QUICK: Minisink Valley Reformed Dutch Church Records, 1716-1830, NY Genealogical and Biographical Society, New York, 1913:

There is no baptismal record or birth record for Lena Quick. However, she is likely the daughter of Thomas Quick. She and Salomon Decker, her husband, had a son named Thomas (Machackemeck Baptisms page 137, and a daughter named Grietje, page 128. These could have been named after the baptismal witnesses, Thomas Wells, and Grietje De Witt, respectively, but they could have also been named after Thomas and Margriet. The argument that Lena was Thomas and Margriet's daughter are the facts that Cornelius Quick, was the witness for Lena's son Joseph in 1756 (page 132) and Lena, along with Benjamin Quick, were witnesses for the baptism of Benjamin, the son of Dirk Quick and Apolonie Van Garden, in 1743 (page 106).

In addition, she is listed as a daughter of Thomas Quick, baptized at Metshippekonk, in J. B. Ten Eyck, Old Dutch Records of the Machackemech, and Menissinck Churches, Port Jervis, NY, 1899, 60.
