Selected by Co Sida ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA® TEAM S ELECTED BY C O SIDA For Release: Monday, March 9 – 12 noon ET SKYLAR MAYS OF LSU, BRITTANY BREWER OF TEXAS TECH LEAD ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA® DIVISION I MEN’S & WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAMS AUSTIN, Texas – Louisiana State University senior guard Skylar Mays and Texas Tech University graduate student forward Brittany Brewer headline the 2019-20 Academic All-America® Division I men’s and women’s basketball teams selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced Monday. Mays has been named the 2019-20 Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I men’s basketball, while Brewer earned the distinction of 2019-20 Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I women’s basketball. Mays, a kinesiology major from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, earns Academic All-America® of the Year honors after being named to the Academic All-America® First Team in 2018-19 and earning second team honors in 2017-18. He boasts a 3.93 GPA and was named to the All-SEC Second Team last season. He was also named the 2019 SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year. This season, Mays is a top-10 finalist for the Jerry West Award as of one the nation’s top shooting guard. He leads the Tigers scoring 16.6 points per game and is second on the team in assists, averaging 3.0 per game. Mays is the only player in LSU history to accumulate 1,500 points, 400 rebounds, 300 assists, and 200 steals. A native of Abilene, Texas, Brewer is pursuing a graduate degree in community, family & addiction sciences. She becomes a two-time First Team Academic All-America selection after also earning the honor in 2018-19. Brewer carries a 3.66 GPA in her graduate course work after earning a 4.0 as an undergrad. She was recently named one of 10 finalists for Lisa Leslie Award as one of the top center in the country. She ranks second in the country averaging 4.39 blocks a game, while scoring 16.5 points and grabbing 10.3 rebounds for the Red Raiders. Earlier this season she tied the Division I record when she blocked 16 shots against Louisiana Monroe. Three of the 15 members of the Academic All-America® Division I Men’s Basketball teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA, all of which are graduate students. The five members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.93, with the entire men’s team holding a collective average GPA of 3.78 Four others join Mays as repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division I men’s basketball teams from 2018-19 – Amidou Bamba (Charlotte), Brooks DeBisschop (Northern Arizona University), James Foye (Dartmouth College), and Matt Pile (University of Nebraska Omaha). Six of the 15 members of the Academic All-America® Division I women’s basketball teams sport a perfect 4.0 GPA in either undergrad or graduate school. The five members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.94, with the complete15-member women’s team averaging a 3.88 GPA. Along with Brewer, the Academic All-America® Division I Women’s Basketball teams have four other repeat performers from last year’s teams – Becca Hittner (Drake University), Ciara Duffy (University of South Dakota), Mikayla Pivec (Oregon State University), and Sara Rhine (Drake University). (February 5, 2020) – Twenty-one NCAA® men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes who excel both on and off the court were selected as finalists today for the 2019-20 Senior CLASS Award®. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their athletic platforms to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 30 men’s candidates and 30 women’s candidates announced earlier in the season. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to submit votes online at the Senior CLASS Award website through March 23. Fan votes will be combined with those of the media and Division I head coaches to determine the winners. The Senior CLASS Award recipients will be announced during the 2020 NCAA Men’s Final Four® and NCAA Women’s Final Four®. Mays and Knight have been signed to two-way contracts. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed. Drafted sixth overall by the Hawks in the 2020 NBA Draft, the 6’9 Okongwu led the USC Trojans in points per game, rebounds per game and blocks per game in his only collegiate season, averaging 16.2 points, 8.6 boards and 2.7 blocks in 28 appearances (all starts) in 2019-20. He earned All-Pac-12 First Team honors and was a member of the Pac-12 All- Freshman team after leading the conference in FG% (.616), ranking second in blocks and second in total offensive rebounds (92). The Chino, Calif. native scored in double figures on 25 occasions and recorded 11 double-doubles, including five contests with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. He set a USC freshman record with 76 blocked shots, including a school-record tying eight rejections in his first collegiate game on 11/5/19 against Florida A&M. Mays, selected in the second round (50th overall) by the Hawks in the 2020 NBA Draft, averaged 16.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.8 steals in 31 games (all starts) en route to an All-SEC First Team selection as a senior in 2019-20.
