This invader has often been described as a disturbance specialist. Here we present data on its spread in a dense native rainforest in New Caledonia. We monitored by pitfall trapping the litter ant fauna along an invasive gradient from the edge to the inner forest in July 1999 and March 2000. When W. auropunctata was present, the abundance and richness of native ants drops dramatically. In invaded plots, W. auropunctata represented more than 92% of all trapped ant fauna. Among the 23 native species described, only four cryptic species survived. Wasmannia auropunctata appears to be a highly competitive ant that dominates the litter by eliminating native ants. Mechanisms involved in this invasive success may include predation as well as competitive interactions (exploitation and interference). The invasive success of W. auropunctata is similar to that of other tramp ants and reinforces the idea of common evolutionary traits leading to higher competitiveness in a new environment. The aim of this study was to compile the species sampled in different areas in the State of Acre. An inventory was carried out in pristine forest in the municipality of Xapuri. This list was complemented with the information of a previous inventory carried out in a forest fragment in the municipality of Senador Guiomard and with a list of species deposited at the Entomological Collection of National Institute of Amazonian Research– INPA. -

OBSERVATIONS ON THE GENUS TERATANER IN MADAGASCAR (HYMENOPTERA: FORMICIDAE) BY GARY D. ALPERT Museum of Comparative Zoology Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138 INTRODUCTION The present study was inspired by the analysis of endemism in Malagasy ants by William L. Brown (1973). The rare myrmicine ant genus Terataner, presently with twelve described species, is known only from the Ethiopian and Malagasy zoogeographical regions. Bolton (1981) revised the Ethiopian species of Terataner, and provided illustrations and a key to workers. In the same paper, Bolton described a new species of Terataner from Madagascar and included an illustrated key to workers from the Malagasy region. An ongoing study of Malagasy Terataner resulted in the discovery of many new species (Alpert, in prep.) and the first .rtatural history data on any of the ants in this group. This new information sepa- rates Terataner into two distinct groups with fundamental biologi- cal differences. The first group, containing four closely related arboreal species, occurs only in tropical West Africa. According to Bolton (1981, pers. comm.), these species construct nests in rotten parts of stand- ing timber, often located a considerable distance above the ground. The males in this group are unknown and the female reproductives, although presently undescribed, are morphologically typical ant queens. No other biological information is available on this group of ants. The second, much larger, group of Terataner species nests near the ground and inhabits preformed plant cavities, such as hollow twigs and burrows of wood-boring insects. One species occurs in the Transvaal of South Africa, one in East Africa, one in the Sey- chelles, and five are currently recognized in Madagascar. -

The Japanese L. azumai is reviewed and six new worker-based species described: L. lakshmi (Kerala State, India); L. hmong (Lao Cai Province, Vietnam); L. diwata, L. emarginata and L. idianale (Mt Isarog, Luzon, Philippines) and L. limatula (Leyte, Philippines). Gynes are characterized for L. azumai, L. hmong and L. limatula. All taxa are diagnosed, illustrated, and their affinities discussed. En esta tesis se estudiaron de forma integral la sistemática y ecología de una subfamilia de hormigas, las ponerinas. Esta subfamilia predomina en regiones tropicales y neotropicales, estando presente en Argentina desde el norte hasta la provincia de Buenos Aires. Se utilizó un enfoque integrador, combinando análisis genéticos con morfológicos para estudiar su diversidad, en combinación con estudios ecológicos y comportamentales para estudiar la dominancia, estructura de la comunidad y posición trófica de las Ponerinas. Los resultados sugieren que la diversidad es más alta de lo que se creía, tanto por que se encontraron nuevos registros durante la colecta de nuevo material, como porque nuestros análisis sugieren la presencia de especies crípticas. Adicionalmente, demostramos que en el PN Iguazú, dos ponerinas: Dinoponera australis y Pachycondyla striata son componentes dominantes en la comunidad de hormigas. Análisis de isótopos estables revelaron que la mayoría de las Ponerinas ocupan niveles tróficos altos, con excepción de algunas especies arborícolas del género Neoponera que dependerían de néctar u otros recursos vegetales. -
Origins and Affinities of the Ant Fauna of Madagascar
Biogéographie de Madagascar, 1996: 457-465 ORIGINS AND AFFINITIES OF THE ANT FAUNA OF MADAGASCAR Brian L. FISHER Department of Entomology University of California Davis, CA 95616, U.S.A. e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT.- Fifty-two ant genera have been recorded from the Malagasy region, of which 48 are estimated to be indigenous. Four of these genera are endemic to Madagascar and 1 to Mauritius. In Madagascar alone,41 out of 45 recorded genera are estimated to be indigenous. Currently, there are 318 names of described species-group taxa from Madagascar and 381 names for the Malagasy region. The ant fauna of Madagascar, however,is one of the least understoodof al1 biogeographic regions: 2/3of the ant species may be undescribed. Associated with Madagascar's long isolation from other land masses, the level of endemism is high at the species level, greaterthan 90%. The level of diversity of ant genera on the island is comparable to that of other biogeographic regions.On the basis of generic and species level comparisons,the Malagasy fauna shows greater affinities to Africathan to India and the Oriental region. Thestriking gaps in the taxonomic composition of the fauna of Madagascar are evaluatedin the context of island radiations.The lack of driver antsin Madagascar may have spurred the diversification of Cerapachyinae and may have permitted the persistenceof other relic taxa suchas the Amblyoponini. Laos is one of the most undersampled areas for ant biodiversity. We begin to address this knowledge gap by presenting the first checklist of Laotian ants. The list is based on a literature review and on specimens col- lected from several localities in Laos. In total, 123 species with three additional subspecies in 47 genera belonging to nine subfamilies are listed, including 62 species recorded for the first time in the country. Comparisons with neighboring countries suggest that this list is still very incomplete. The provincial distribu- tion of ants within Laos also show that most species recorded are from Vien- tiane Province, the central part of Laos while the majority of other provinces have received very little, if any, ant sampling. -

Ten species are recognized, of which four are new: L. cur- vata sp. n., L. desupra sp. n., L. levifrons (Mann) stat. n., L. polita (Mann) stat. n., L. rugosa (Mann), L. sukuna sp. n., L. stoneri (Mann) stat. n., L. striatella (Mann), L. tor- tuosa (Mann), and L. vuda sp. n. Descriptions of each species are provided, along with distribution maps and a key for the identification of workers. A preliminary comparison with Lordomyrma from Australia, New Guinea, and New Caledonia is fol- lowed by a discussion of the distribution of species within Fiji and an outline of future research directions pertaining to the taxonomy, biogeography and conservation of the Fijian species. BACKGROUND The genus Lordomyrma (Formicidae: Myrmicinae) Emery is comprised of relatively uncommon and often elegantly sculptured ants occurring in the Australian and Oriental regions. Species have been described from Japan, New Guinea, eastern Australia, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands and Fiji (Bolton 1995), with additional undescribed species being reported from Borneo (Brühl et al. 1998). Of the 24 currently recognized species in the genus (including those described here), ten are endemic to the Fijian arch- ipelago.
