Approval Name: Maliha Siddiqi Degree: Master of Arts Title: “The valley of desire”: A study of Kashmir as portrayed through popular Indian cinema Zoë Druick Senior Supervisor Professor Katherine Reilly Program director Associate Professor Date Defended/Approved: 31st August 2020 ii Abstract Indian-administered Kashmir has been a conflicted territory since 1947. This paper studies the representation of Kashmir and its civilian population in popular Hindi films. As Bollywood has an immensely dedicated audience, both in India as well as globally, the sensitive issues surrounding Kashmir make for extremely sought-after and therefore potentially influential content in films. I argue that these films reflect a sharp bias and a myopic approach towards showcasing the area and its civilian population. This paper employs the use of film analysis and critical discourse analysis to examine seven films — Mission Kashmir (2000), Yahaan (2005),Fanaa (2006), I am (2010), Lamhaa (2010), Haider (2014) and Hamid (2018) — to support the argument. The results show that all the films except Haider and Hamid misrepresent or underrepresent the realities of Kashmir.

  • Geographical Personality of Kashmir Valley
CHAPTER I GEOGRAPHICAL PERSONALITY OF KASHMIR VALLEY “Agar Firdoos Barooy-e-Zameen ast, Hamin astoo Hamin astoo Hamin ast” (If there is paradise on Earth, It is here, It is here, It is here) (Mughal Emperor, Jahangir) 1.1 Introduction Kashmir Valley has rightly been called as the “Paradise on Earth” and “Switzerland of Asia”. Bernier, the first European traveler to enter Kashmir, wrote in 1665 that “In truth, the kingdom surpasses in beauty all that my warmest imagination had anticipated” (Young-husband, 1911)1. Geographically and climatically, Kashmir is the core of mighty Himalayas receiving in abundance its grace in the form of captivating scenic beauty, lush green pastures and lofty glistening snow covered mountain peaks which capture the changing hues of the brilliant sun, in many ways, the enchanting rivers and rivulets and the great lakes of mythological fame. In her valleys grow the rarest of trees and herbs, including the most precious of all flowers - the Zaafran (Saffron). In her forest are found the best pines and deodars. From her orchards come apples, apricots, pears, walnuts and cherries of different kinds. On her green meadows graze the lambs bearing the most exquisite wool. Her Dal lake and her house boats, Gulmarg and her glaciers have made her an international tourist spot. What to talk of her temples, the dream of every devout Hindu - the Holy Amarnath where lakhs of pilgrims trek every year, regardless of inclement weather and a host of other dangers; the Shiva temple, the Khir Bhawani, all with their lofty associations with great masterminds and the impeccable Shaivite philosophy (Sadhu,1984)2.

International Journal of Engineering Technology Science and Research IJETSR www.ijetsr.com ISSN 2394 – 3386 Volume 5, Issue 1 January 2018 Waste Free Srinagar City Danish Ahmed, Dr. M.A.Lone ABSTRACT The paper deals with the concept of a clean Srinagar City. As the population of this city has grown in the recent years, and so has the waste generation. The waste is in the shape of solid waste and liquid waste, apart from generation of pollutants which have created problems in the atmosphere . Although liquid waste in the shape of sewage is being taken care of, yet no solution has been provided to deal with the solid waste. The municipal garbage bins are overflowing and the transportation , disposal and treatment are yet to be finalized. At present, the whole of solid waste is being dumped at the open dump site Achan. This has resulted in an unsanitary condition in the area, and the problem is increasing as the days pass by. A lot of untreated solid waste has accumulated at the site and a large quantity of leachate is polluting the ground water. A number of meetings with the local municipality have resulted in various solutions, but none has been finalized. The paper presents the quantification , qualitative analysis and the most feasible treatment proposed for this problem. KEY WORDS Achan ,Solid Waste , Collection, Segregation, Treatment, Reclamation, Leachate, RDF INTRODUCTION Srinagar is the summer Capital of J & K state. The city is located on both the sides of the Jhelum River, which is called Vyath in Kashmir. The river passes through the city and meanders through the valley, moving onward and deepening in the Dal Lake.
