produced and edited by North Bradley Parish Council for the people of NORTH BRADLEY, BROKERSWOOD AND YARNBROOK [email protected] www.northbradley.org.uk

In May I was re-elected as Chairman of the Parish Council with Councillor Mrs Lee Lee as Vice-Chair. Welcome to our Summer edition of the Parish Newsletter. I would like to thank Vivien Birch for instigating the WW1 Working Group and her commitment to getting the project off the ground, I am very sorry therefore to hear of her recent illness and her need to withdraw from the project (see below). The Town Football Club held a successful tournament over the 31st May/1st June weekend, thank you to all residents for your forbearance with the traffic congestion. Hitachi has just had their official opening of ‘Hakuba House’. This company has made great strides to interact with the local community and have already made a donation to our local school for an ecological project. Hope the weather is kind to us for the rest of the Summer and hope you all have a pleasant summer break.

WW1 COMMEMORATION - A message from Vivien Birch Recently I have developed a health problem, which means I have to withdraw from organising the North Bradley WW1 Commemoration project for the time being. I shall continue to add to the Facebook group (Direct link - https://www.facebook.com/groups/262534177257797/). Also I am continuing to research those men of the parish who died in the service of their King and Country, and will go on adding the information I find to the website Lives of the First World War (livesofthefirstworldwar.org).

The North Bradley WW1 memorials have recently been added to War Memorials Online (warmemorialsonline.org.uk) where you can see a photograph and a roll of honour. As is inscribed at the bottom of each plaque, the same in St Nicholas Church and the Baptist Church, “They did their Duty”.

INFIGHTING ON THE ALLOTMENTS Allotments are places where you can find fresh produce, fresh air and exercise, friendship and companionship’s are formed with people from all walks of life, the rewards are priceless and the only battles you fight are the weather, slugs and pigeons. In the main allotment growers are usually far too busy with all this to think about arguments and disagreements, so this year the only idea we had of war was the World War I commemoration that was going countrywide, we did not expect to see war break out on one of the allotments. One plot was worked by Angela and on occasions her husband Brian was allowed to help out with the odd bit of digging or harvesting, he had his own plot on another site in Trowbridge. I should add here that both Brian and Angela are expert allotmenteer’s (is that a word? You know what I mean!) Both are often invited to give talks to groups, judge shows and other allotment sites around the county. They both thought that running two plots at different locations was a bit daft so Brian decided he would give up his plot and work Angela’s plot at North Bradley with her. ‘Not likely’ she said ‘ that’s my plot I’m not having you interfering in it’ ‘We can still grow all the same things but if we get rid of growing Gladioli and Garlic we can put more Brassica’s in’ said Brian. ‘There you are you’ve not even started on the plot with me and already I’m to lose my Garlic and Gladioli’ However, after discussions an agreement was reached whereby Brian worked one end and Angela the other and they would share working the Strawberry & Herb Beds and while there was some argument over keeping the Jerusalem Artichokes, which were on Brian’s half it was decided they would be kept but cut back. One plot holder sidled up to me the other day and said that when he passed them one morning there was a discussion going on about ‘have you put some cabbage seeds in my half’, ‘yes I have I did not have room in my half and you were not using that bit of earth’. ‘Well actually I was going to put Spinach seeds in there’. ‘Alright you can put them in a bit of my half’ ‘Well ‘If I can put them in a piece of your ground why did you not put your Cabbages in there in the first place?’ (I thought that was a good point) Evidently a sort of armistice was reached but Angela dug over three rows of soil on her plot in under 5 minutes, it was a record. I was busy doing a bit of weeding this morning when Brian came along, ‘Hello I said, how’s it going, do we need to buy a Do-It-Yourself Divorce Kit’ out of the allotment funds yet?’ Ha! Ha!, I’m so witty!! ‘Not yet’ said Brian. ‘Better keep it on hold though, Angela had a spare Courgette plant yesterday and asked if she could put it on my half of the plot. I told her I’d want to set up a lease agreement first’ ‘I bet that went down well’ I said ‘MMMM’ he replied ‘did not help that she asked me to water for her yesterday and I said no, as I was bound to not do it right or use the wrong watering can’ ‘Crikey’ I said ‘I bet you’re in the dog house’ ‘MMM, I made my own breakfast this morning’. It’s amazing what you see going on down the allotments - Cllr Lee Lee This article is written tongue in cheek; the names have not been changed so the people concerned are fully recognizable, to many of you. 4 .
