Registration Packet

Thank you for becoming STAFF at SWAT-LC In this form, we have provided you with some vital camp information, a stuff to bring list, and a map to the camp. If you have any questions, you can contact the Camp Director, Jeff Nichols, by Cell = (208) 358-3849, or E-mail = [email protected] What is SWAT - Leadership Camp?

This Leadership Camp is a 8 day event held at Intermountain Christian Camp, in Fairfield, ID in June for teens going into high school through graduated seniors. This camp is for Christian kids that want to develop leadership skills and take their faith to the next level. This is an intensive camp designed to develop the faith that is already possessed by the teens and take it farther into their character, actions, world view and lifestyle. We are passionate about developing teens into leaders for Jesus Christ.

This Leadership Camp is built around 4 critical elements:

- Cultivating a passion for God. - Growing leadership skills and character in Christian teens. - Developing a Christian and Spiritual worldview.

- Learning Biblical / spiritual truths through what we know and see in the physical world.

Our hope is that all who are involved with this camp will walk away with more than just another long week at camp. Our goal is to develop a Spirit-changed life that is more prepared to face and lead others through the struggles of this world. We want to see God use this Camp to bring up a generation of leaders for His Kingdom.

CAMP Design / Purpose Overview

The Camp consists of 8 days of life changing and motivating experiences. 8 days of intensive learning, training, and experiences, ending with a rite of passage that inspires all to re-penetrate the world as a better Christian and leader. This camp is designed to be experiential in its process. However, it is driven by a question. How do you teach spiritual truths of an unseen world? Many times when people encounter teachings of the spiritual world they have a hard time grasping the concepts or believing it altogether because they can’t see it. So, how do we overcome this barrier? You do it like Jesus did - He took the earthly things people knew and understood; then, used them to teach and illustrate a higher spiritual lesson. Jesus used things like farming, sowing fields, fishing, shepherding, servants, masters, etc. - and His followers did the same, even using things like boxing, sport, and warfare. In other words, we are going to follow their example but in a very experiential way - using what we can see and then placing ourselves in those very situations. We will be looking at what we know from the history of warfare, leadership, and discipleship, as we build bridges into the spiritual world and develop leaders for the kingdom of God.

Learning

There is an intense emphasis on learning and gaining knowledge into the spiritual world. Lessons and teachings will play a critical role throughout the camp. They will take on more meaning, have a greater importance and take on a higher application in all dally camp activates than at a regular camp. As a camper they will have to learn and memorize portions of the information that will be presented to you at a high proficiency level, so they can accurately use it in the scenarios and experiences throughout the camp. This camp requires note taking, memorization, recalling information skillfully, showing understanding of material through testing, and life application of learned truths. You will be learning the material in many different ways and forms. There will also be help from teachers and fellow campers to aid in this learning process. Being an "A" student is not a requirement, but the desire to learn and be willing to put forth an above ordinary effort in gaining knowledge is vital. We see the lessons at SWAT as a spiritual foundation to everything we do.

Discipline

One situation campers will be put into is a type of discipline. This camp will have a camp feel to it. However, we are not here to belittle or harass the campers. But we are going to require discipline and reinforce the cooperation of the camper with physical training, i.e. push-ups, sit ups, and running. We do this as another teaching method. How can we train ourselves to be disciplined spiritually if we do not understand what it takes to be disciplined and trained physically? This type of discipline will be applied and practiced throughout every aspect of the camp. Every morning will also start with PT (Physical Training) exercises. Several of the training experiences will also require some physical stamina. We recommend that all campers prepare themselves for this before they come to this camp. The Sport of

Another situation campers will be put in at this camp will be the sport of paintball. We use this sport to help bridge the gap between the physical and spiritual world. In doing so we take what we know from the history of warfare and analyze it, in order to see what it can teach us about spiritual warfare. The paintball equipment fits well with the spiritual armor we see in scripture and obviously is much safer than the real military. We also use it because it is an activity that excites the hearts of young people today. Again, we will be using paintball as a real life illustration to bring a reality and understanding to spiritual issues. Please understand that we do not use paintball as just a fun activity, (nor is this camp based on it), but as a major extractive learning tool.

STAFF COST / SIGN UP PROCESS

The Cost for Staff: All staff need to contact the director of the camp before signing up. Full time Staff: all 8 days = $275.00 Which includes, room and board for 8 days at camp, access to in- depth teaching, life changing challenges and experiences, along with all your equipment and paint you need to engage in the camp’s teaching scenarios using the sport of paintball, and lead youth into a deeper faith.

Part time Staff: We have tried to make it easy for staff with jobs and schedules to join us. We have broken down our pricing for staff on what days they are at camp. - Non-paintball scenario days are: $25.00 a day - Paintball Scenario days are: $50.00 a day (See how days break down under “camp dates” below) If you can come up for only one day it is $50 for non-paintball scenario and $100.00 for paintball scenario days.

Part time staff are mostly needed to come up and help with the paintball scenario aspect of the camp. We understand that jobs and schedules don’t allow all staff to be at the camp the whole 8 days. This part time staff is a huge need, for they play and complete a vital role in the camp as the opposition. This cost includes, room and board for the days at camp, access to life changing challenges and experiences, along with all your equipment and paint you need to engage in the camp’s teaching scenarios using the sport of paintball and lead young Christian teens into a deeper faith.

Campers may not bring their own paintball equipment. A staff member, however, who wants to bring their own paintball equipment, (mask, marker, air tank) may do so, as long as your equipment meets the camp standards.

Please be aware that all Staff will be filling the role of the Opposition and or Medics in the scenarios? We want the campers to develop unity and camaraderie, where individual success is measured in group accomplishments. To help teach this, the campers will never compete against each other in the scenarios. Still, all participants including staff will be seen as a vital component of a bigger picture, where each has a critical role to play. All the participants need to understand the intense type and style of this Leadership Camp (as described in this packet) and agree to its conditions and commitment levels. All participants will be seen as volunteering and wanting to be a part of this style of Leadership Camp

We expect you to be able to comply with the following minimums in these three areas at the check in of SWAT.

**The more you prepare the better and more beneficial your

camp experience will be.** Spiritually You need to be able and willing to do the following at camp and we HIGHLY recommend that you come spiritually prepared for the camp.

1. - You need to be in Prayer is vital - you will benefit the most from taking the time and actually praying for this camp prayer on a daily basis for this on a regular and daily basis. Get others to camp. commit to pray for you and this camp as well.

- Nothing will prepare you more. Pray for: - A positive attitude, fellow campers, staff and leaders, safety, lessons, teachers, open hearts and minds, Holy Spirit filled life change, good weather, The things you might be nervous about, The things you are excited about. What the Holy Spirit is going to do in the lives of us all. (etc.)

2. - Be willing to pray or read - We don’t expect eloquent prayers scriptures out loud in a group. or perfect readers, just a willingness to engage with God and his word.

3. - Choose (now) to have a - This attitude is vital in every aspect of the camp. You signed a covenant stating your williness to servants/sacrificial attitude at show and live out that type of attitude. Start home so you will be ready to practicing now. do so at camp.

Your spiritual readiness is the most vital part of this camp. We base everything we do on a spiritual truth or application.

To neglect this or just do the minimum in this category will hinder your understanding and what you get out of this leadership camp.

Mentally

You will need to know the following and we HIGHLY recommend that you come mentally prepared for the camp, with an attitude to gain, learn, and apply knowledge.

1. - Be able to find all the books in the Bible quickly and without tabs or helps. You will need to memorize the names of all 66 books – This means of the Bible in order by check in.

2. - Memorize and be able to verbally quote and right down these scriptures. - You will need to have memorized and know all 6 of them at check in of camp.

- 1 Timothy 4:12 - Philippians 2:14 - Hebrews 12:1-3

- Philippians 2:3-5 - 1 John 2:6 - James 1:22

This memory work will help prepare your mind and heart for the camp. You will need to be able to quote them from memory without help, prompts, or reminders. To neglect it or just do enough to where you think you will get by in this category will hinder your understanding and what you get out of this leadership camp.

Memorizing tips – For the verses: get 3x5 cards and write out the verses. Carry the cards with you wherever you go and whenever you have a moment throughout the day review them and try to say them to yourself. Keep quizzing yourself all the way up to camp. - For the books of the bible break them down into 5-6 books at a time. Memorize them and then add the next few till you have all 66 books.

You don’t know it until you can say it out loud from

memory with no helps or prompts.

Do what works for you. You don’t have to do it this way, but make sure that it gets done and perfected before camp.

SWAT Command Calls We need all staff to be familiar with an know these instructions – Spend some time learning these calls.

We use these command calls as a way of teaching disciple and focus. Many times at the camp we need to quickly move from one thing/place to another and the ability to listen to a leader and execute the given instructions is vital. We are trying to promote unity and consistency with the guys at the camp. All staff members need to familiarize themselves with these calls and their designed actions and responses.

- When Giving Commands When command has a comma (,) the part before the comma is the “get ready command” and the part after the comma is the “command of execution”, pause briefly between the “get ready command” and the “command of execution”. So when the command of “Forward, March” is given the formation shouldn’t move until “March”.

- Use of whistle Many staff will carry a referee whistle. We use the whistles many times at the camp. The whistle is there to save the leaders voice and to get everyone’s attention fast. It is an all in one get ready command. When anyone hears the whistle blown everyone immediately stops what they are doing and stands at attention weighting for farther instructions.

- Formation basics (All commands are given while at attention) The position of attention – No talking, heels together, toes pointed out, feet at a 45° angle, standing straight from heels to head (without locking the knees), arms straight down at the side, thumb pointing straight down in line from the top of the shoulder to the tip of the thumb nail facing forward, fingers curled loosely, shoulders slightly back (yet comfortable), chest out (without arching the back), back straight, chin out (don’t exaggerate), eyes forward (not looking around). Parade, Rest – Modified position of attention. No talking, eyes still straight forward, left foot moves only, so that feet are shoulder width apart, back straight, hands are placed in the small of the back, thumbs interlocked, elbows out. Stand at, Ease – Given to allow the formation to relax slightly. No talking, eyes are fixed on the one talking in front of the formation, if the one talking moves behind formation all eyes should return to straight forward until the one talking is back in front. Stance is similar to Parade rest, except the hands are allowed to drop as long as the elbows are still out, shoulders allowed to relax also as long as back remains straight. At, Ease – Given to release immediate attention. No talking, eyes may wander, and movement is allowed as long as neither foot moves. Stance is similar to stand at ease; except the hands are allowed to drop and elbows are relaxed at the side, as long as the hands stay behind the individual with thumbs interlocked. Rest – Given to allow formation to talk and move around as long as the right foot does not move. Fall In – Given to form ranks. Formation should fall in centered on, and facing, the one giving the command, falling in at the position of attention. Dress right, Dress – Given to straighten up the formation. First rank places right hand on right hip and turns, their heads only, to the right lining up evenly down the line starting with the person on the front right corner of formation. Person on the corner of formation remains at the position of attention. Second, third, and fourth ranks all remain facing forward with their right hand stretched out in front of them on the shoulder of the one in front of them. So that looking down each rank you only see one head, and looking down each column you only see one head. Group, Attention – Given at anytime in any situation to cause everyone within the immediate area to stop and come to the position of attention. This is also accomplished with blowing a whistle.

Marching basics Always step off with the left foot. - All marching commands are given from the left foot, except column right. - The one leading formation is outside to the left, centered on the formation.

Formation Movements Right/Left, Face – Faces formation, in place, to the left or the right. - pivots on the heel of the left/right foot and ball of the right/left foot while turning to the left/right, snapping the right/left heel up to the left/right heel returning to the position of attention. About, Face – Faces formation, in place, to the rear. Place the ball of the right foot six inches directly behind the heel of the left foot. Pivot on the ball of the right foot and heel of the left foot around to the right ending at the position of attention 180° from the beginning. Forward, March – Starts formation marching normal pace forward, facing any direction. Double time, March – Given only while marching. Starts formation running. Quick time, March – Given only while running, slows formation back to normal pace. Mark time, March – Given either while formation is marching at normal pace, or from standing still. Starts formation marching in place. Group, Halt – Given either while formation is marching at normal pace, or while formation is marching in place. Column left/right, March – Given either while formation is marching at normal pace, or from standing still. First person in the column pivots with the left foot forward for a column right, and the right foot forward for a column left, pivoting on the balls of their feet (as in a facing movement) always stepping off with the left foot. Counter column, March – Given either while formation is marching at normal pace, or from standing still. Causes formation to march in opposite direction. Third squad takes one step executing a column left taking two more steps executing another column left and slowing to a half step until all squads are even. Second squad takes two steps and executes a column right taking three more steps executing another column right, passing between third and fourth squads slowing to a half step once even with third squad until all squads are even. Fourth squad takes three steps executing a column left taking four more steps executing another column left slowing to a half step once even with third and second squads until all squads are even. First squad takes four steps executing a column right taking five more steps executing another column right speeding up slightly to catch up with the other squads until all squads are even. The one leading formation follows first squad. Once all squads are even formation returns to a normal marching pace.

PT formation (spreads everybody out to a double arm interval, staggered) Extend to the left, March – Squad leaders stay in place facing forward with both arms out. The rest of formation all look to the right with both arms out sounding off while moving to the left until everyone is at double arm interval. Formation leader moves to center on the formation. Arms downward, Move – Everyone returns to the position of attention. Left, Face – Everyone executes a left face. Extend to the left, March – First squad leader stays in place facing forward with both arms out. The rest of formation all look to the right with both arms out sounding off while moving to the left until everyone is at double arm interval. Arms downward, Move - Everyone returns to the position of attention. Right, Face - Everyone executes a right face. Even ranks/second row one step to the left, Uncover – All even ranks, or everyone in the second row, takes on side step to the left creating a stager between ranks. This is when everyone grounds their gear. Assemble to the right, March – Given from the position of attention, after everyone has secured their gear. First squad leader remains in place while rest of formation sounds off and assembles to the right at dress right dress. Formation leader moves to center on the formation. Arms downward, Move – Given once formation is dressed right, and formation leader is centered. Everyone returns to the position of attention.

Special formation movements File from the left, … (Used to move into a single file line. Formation should follow the execution command starting with first squad.) …Follow me …Forward march

Giving general commands and instructions: Say: On the command of fall out…(give any instruction necessary), Fall out. This is our go to command throughout the camp.
