February 16, 2021 – Fat Tuesday—Mardi Gras—Shrove Tuesday—Pancake Day!

Sanctification: Growing with God One Step and Prayer at a Time!

Mardi Gras (French for Fat Tuesday), Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day, is the Tuesday before which is the beginning of the 40 Day Season of Lent…Lent is a time of Giving Up Something, fasting, self-sacrifice that will have a spiritual significance in your life, bringing you closer to God and closer to the people of God…Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Pancake Day, is the last day before the fast on which each household rids itself of the items to be fasted, often referred to as the last feast before the fast (often sugars, fat, eggs, as well as non-food items to be fasted) hence many folks have a festival meal of pancakes on Fat Tuesday as a symbolic final preparation for the Fasting and Discipline of the Lenten Season…Shrove Tuesday is another name given to Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Pancake Day, which brings to light the need for self-examination, confession, and repentance, and the taking on of spiritual practices that help us turn back to the ways of God…Indeed, Confess, Repent and Believe the Gospel…May our Fat Tuesday yield to the Holy Season of Lent, which guides us to the Foot of the Cross of , which will carry us to the Empty Tomb and Resurrection of our best , yet! What will you give up for Lent?! May you give up “Not Praying!” What will you take on for Lent?! May you take on “Praying!”

"Repent and believe in the gospel.” “God! Please hurry to my rescue! GOD, come quickly to my side! GOD, don’t lose a minute.” "God, have mercy on me, a sinner." “Let every living, breathing creature praise GOD! Hallelujah!” (Mark 1:15 NKJV; Psalm 70:1,5 MSG; Luke 18:13 NIV; Psalm 150:6 MSG)

February 17, 2021 – (Ash Wednesday)

Sanctification: Growing with God One Step and Prayer at a Time!

[ proclaims] "Repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15 NKJV) Today is Ash Wednesday and begins our 40-day Season of Lent (not counting Sundays) …Our Lenten Journey is a pilgrimage of faith with fellow believers toward the Cross of Good Friday concluding on Waiting Saturday…Then with the dawn of Easter Sunday morning we will declare “Christ Is Risen! He Is Risen, Indeed!...

The Season of Lent invites you and me to be intentional about growing our relationship with God, furthering our commitment to loving and serving the people of God, and maturing in our faith…The Season of Lent invites you and me to self-discipline and self-sacrifice in matters of the spirit which will heighten our experience of Easter…

Lent invites us to “give up” something for 40 days (self-sacrifice) that will help us experience life and living abundantly (i.e. Give Up: Fear of Failure, Your Comfort Zone, Feelings of Unworthiness, Impatience, Retirement, People Pleasing, Comparison, Blame, Guilt, Over Commitment, Lack of Counsel, Impurity, Entitlement, Apathy, Hatred, Negativity, The Spirit of Poverty, Going Through the Motions, Complaint, The Pursuit of Happiness, Bitterness, Distraction, Giving up, Mediocrity, Destructive Speech, Busyness, Loneliness, The Quick Fix, Worry, Idolizing, Resistance to Change, Pride, Small View of God, Envy, Ungratefulness, Selfish Ambition, Self-Sufficiency, Sorrow, My Life…you get the idea)…

Lent invites us to “take on” something for 40 days (self-discipline) that will become part of our being as a child of God (i.e., Take On: Luxurious Prayer, daily…Leisurely Bible Reading, daily…Lovingly Worship, Personal Meditation Daily; The Gathered Community, Weekly…Lifetime Learning, Daily…Laughingly Play, Daily…Lavishly Serve, Daily…Liberally Give, Daily…again, you get the idea) …

Contemplate that if these self-disciplines and self-sacrifices can work for 40 days, what if they become part of who we are for a lifetime, and indeed we become like Jesus growing in wisdom and stature…However, if we try to do these things on our own, it would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, but, with God’s help all things are possible, even our Lenten “Giving Up” and “Taking On”…

Today, may we choose wisely what we will “Give Up” and “Take On” and we will travel this Lenten Pilgrimage Path together, our long obedience in the same direction toward God, to the Cross of Good Friday and the Empty Tomb of Easter, and experience our best Easter yet!!! Consider giving up “Not Praying” and taking on “Praying!” Then immerse yourself in prayer and praying, guided by the prayers and scriptures that will follow on these days of/in Lent…Indeed, let us pray!

Let us Play/Pray: Almighty God and Loving Father, God of Ash Wednesday…thank you for reminding me of my mortality and my need for a savior…forgive me when I think I can “pull off” saving myself…help me submit to you in all my self-sacrifice and self-discipline…God of Ash Wednesday, Loving Father and Almighty God, I Love You! Amen, Make It So, Love All Around, Hallelujah…

(#3) John Wesley – UMH #607 A Covenant Prayer in the Wesleyan Tradition (Modern):

“I am no longer my own, but yours. Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will; put me to doing, put me to suffering; let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you, exalted for you, or brought low for you; let me be full, let me be empty, let me have all things, let me have nothing: I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure and disposal. And now, glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, you are mine and I am yours. So be it. And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.”

(#4) Lift Every Voice and Sing – UMH #519:

“Lift Every Voice and Sing, till earth and Heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod, felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, we have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered; Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou Who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee. Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee. Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land.”

King David – Psalm 51:1-17 New King James Version A Prayer of Repentance:

“Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, you only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight—That You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness, That the bones You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted to You. Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, The God of my salvation, and my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. O Lord open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise. For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart—These, O God, you will not despise.”

(#8) Robert Frost:

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both / And be one traveler, long I stood / And looked down one as far as I could / To where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other, as just as fair, / And having perhaps the better claim, / Because it was grassy and wanted wear; / Though as for that the passing there / Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay / In leaves no step had trodden black. / Oh, I kept the first for another day! / Yet knowing how way leads on to way, / I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh / Somewhere ages and ages hence: / Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— / I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference.”

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. "Repent and believe in the gospel.” “God! (#10) Philip Yancey, “Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference?”:

“I know Christians who yearn for God's older style of a power-worker who topples pharaohs, flattens Jericho's walls, and scorches the priests of Baal. I do not. I believe the kingdom now advances through grace and freedom, God's goal all along. I accept Jesus' assurance that his departure from earth represents progress, by opening a door for the Counselor to enter. We know how counselors work: not by giving orders and imposing changes through external force. A good counselor works on the inside, bringing to the surface dormant health. For a relationship between such unequal partners, prayer provides an ideal medium.

Prayer is cooperation with God, a consent that opens the way for grace to work. Most of the time the Counselor communicates subtly: feeding ideas into my mind, bringing to awareness a caustic comment I just made, inspiring me to choose better than I would have done otherwise, shedding light on the hidden dangers of temptation, sensitizing me to another's needs. God's Spirit whispers rather than shouts and brings peace not turmoil. Although such a partnership with God may lack the drama of the bargaining sessions with Abraham and Moses, the advance in intimacy is striking. . . The partnership binds so tight that it becomes hard to distinguish who is doing what, God or the human partner. God has come that close.”

(#11) Desmon Tutu, adapted from an original prayer by Sir Francis Drake:

“Disturb us, O Lord when we are too well-pleased with ourselves when our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little, because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, O Lord when with the abundance of things we possess, we have lost our thirst for the water of life when, having fallen in love with time, we have ceased to dream of eternity and in our efforts to build a new earth, we have allowed our vision of Heaven to grow dim.

Stir us, O Lord to dare more boldly, to venture into wider seas where storms show Thy mastery, where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. In the name of Him who pushed back the horizons of our hopes and invited the brave to follow. Amen”

Behold, Lord, an empty vessel that needs to be filled. My Lord fill it. I am weak in faith; Strengthen thou me. I am cold in love; Warm me and make me fervent That my love may go out to my neighbor. I do not have a strong and firm faith; At times I doubt and am unable to trust thee altogether. O Lord help me. Strengthen my faith and trust in thee. (#14) Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

I heard the bells on Day / Their old, familiar carols play, / And wild and sweet The words repeat / Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come, / The belfries of all Christendom / Had rolled along / The unbroken song / Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way, / The world revolved from night today, / A voice, a chime, / A chant sublime / Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth / The cannon thundered in the South, / And with the sound / The carols drowned / Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent / The hearthstone of a continent, / And made forlorn / The households born / Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head; / “There is no peace on earth,” I said; / “For hate is strong, / And mocks the song / Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”

Then pealed the bells louder and deeper: / “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; / The Wrong shall fail, / The Right prevail, / With peace on earth, good-will to men.”

(#16) “Do It Again, Lord”! by Max Lucado (Prayer after the terrorist attack of 9/11):

“We’re still hoping we’ll wake up. We’re still hoping we’ll open a sleepy eye and think, “What a horrible dream.”

But we won’t, will we, Father? What we saw was not a dream. Planes did gouge towers. Flames did consume our fortress. People did perish. It was no dream and, dear Father, we are sad.

There is a ballet dancer who will no longer dance and a doctor who will no longer heal. A church has lost her priest, a classroom is minus a teacher. Cora ran a food pantry. Paige was a counselor and Dana, dearest Father, Dana was only three years old. (Who held her in those final moments?)

We are sad, Father. For as the innocent are buried, our innocence is buried as well. We thought we were safe. Perhaps we should have known better. But we didn’t.

And so we come to you. We don’t ask you for help; we beg you for it. We don’t request it; we implore it. We know what you can do. We’ve read the accounts. We’ve pondered the stories and now we plead, “Do it again, Lord. Do it again.”

Remember Joseph? You rescued him from the pit. You can do the same for us. Do it again, Lord.

Remember the Hebrews in Egypt? You protected their children from the angel of death. We have children too, Lord. Do it again.

And Sarah? Remember her prayers? You heard them. Joshua? Remember his fears? You inspired him. The women at the tomb? You resurrected their hope. The doubts of Thomas? You took them away. Do it again, Lord. Do it again.

You changed Daniel from a captive into a king’s counselor. You took Peter the fisherman and made him Peter an apostle. Because of you, David went from leading sheep to leading armies. Do it again, Lord, for we need counselors today, Lord. We need apostles. We need leaders. Do it again, dear Lord.

Most of all, do again what you did at Calvary. What we saw here last Tuesday, you saw there that Friday. Innocence slaughtered. Goodness murdered. Mothers weeping. Evil dancing. Just as the smoke eclipsed our morning, so the darkness fell on your Son. Just as our towers were shattered, the very Tower of Eternity was pierced.

And by dusk, heaven’s sweetest song was silent, buried behind a rock. But you did not waver, O Lord. You did not waver. After three days in a dark hole, you rolled the rock and rumbled the earth and turned the darkest Friday into the brightest Sunday. Do it again, Lord. Grant us a September Easter.

We thank you, dear Father, for these hours of unity. Christians are praying with Jews. Republicans are standing with Democrats. Skin colors have been covered by the ash of burning buildings. We thank you for these hours of unity.

And we thank you for these hours of prayer. The Enemy sought to bring us to our knees and succeeded. He had no idea, however, that we would kneel before you. And he has no idea what you can do.

Let your mercy be upon our President, Vice President, and their families. Grant to those who lead us wisdom beyond their years and experience. Have mercy upon the souls who have departed and the wounded who remain. Give us grace that we might forgive and faith that we might believe.

And look kindly upon your church. For two thousand years you’ve used her to heal a hurting world.

Do it again, Lord. Do it again. Through Christ, Amen.

(#17) Martin Luther King, Jr.:

“Thou Eternal God, out of whose absolute power and infinite intelligence the whole universe has come into being, we humbly confess that we have not loved thee with our hearts, souls and minds, and we have not loved our neighbors as Christ loved us. We have all too often lived by our own selfish impulses rather than by the life of sacrificial love as revealed by Christ. We often give in order to receive. We love our friends and hate our enemies. We go the first mile but dare not travel the second. We forgive but dare not forget. And so as we look within ourselves, we are confronted with the appalling fact that the history of our lives is the history of an eternal revolt against you. But thou, O God, have mercy upon us. Forgive us for what we could have been but failed to be. Give us the intelligence to know your will. Give us the courage to do your will. Give us the devotion to love your will. In the name and spirit of Jesus, we pray. Amen.”

“Father, Mother, God, Thank you for your presence during the hard and mean days. For then we have you to lean upon. Thank you for your presence during the bright and sunny days, for then we can share that which we have with those who have less. And thank you for your presence during the Holy Days, for then we are able to celebrate you and our families and our friends. For those who have no voice, we ask you to speak. For those who feel unworthy, we ask you to pour your love out in waterfalls of tenderness. For those who live in pain, we ask you to bathe them in the river of your healing. For those who are lonely, we ask you to keep them company. For those who are depressed, we ask you to shower upon them the light of hope. (#22) Garrison Keillor – A Parent’s Prayer Original Publish Date: June 29, 2010:

A perfect shiny summer day and a crowd of jittery children in clusters on the corner, about to board a yellow bus, their backpacks in a pile, their mothers giving urgent last-minute reassurances, and I stop and stare at this Large Life Event. Kids from nice homes being abandoned by their mothers in broad daylight and sent off to summer camp and God Knows What. The sweet fragility of the kids, especially the gawky boy with glasses. And the elaborate cool of the college kids in charge. The vast love of the mothers, who are on the verge of tears, watching their pups board the bus. (Do the brakes work? Who is the driver? Is he licensed? Sober? Might he be carrying a pistol? Are the wheels securely fastened to the hubs? Two days from now, will I think back to this moment and wonder, why didn’t I go around and check the lug nuts?)

There is more drama on this corner than on the silver screen, and I see it from three angles at once: I am the geek (when I was 12, I imagined the word was meant for me personally since my initials are G.E.K.), and I was at one time the cool camp counselor with the shades and the enigmatic smile, and now I am a parent and quite familiar with trauma.

Three protagonists in the play and I am each one of them. In my geek years, I was a solemn boy with pipestem arms, wire-rim glasses and a homemade haircut, and attended summer Bible camp where we learned about the total depravity of man and then came home and picked potatoes at a nearby truck farm. I assumed I’d grow up and live alone in a tiny room over the bus depot and earn my living by walking around with a sandwich board (EAT AT THE BANDBOX CAFE).

Instead, I went to college, became a cool counselor, and once took 18 young boys in canoes across Lake Vermilion in northern Minnesota in a major thunderstorm, along with another counselor who had smoked dope that morning and basically cut his ties to earth and lay in his canoe singing “A Whiter Shade of Pale” as lightning tore the sky and we plowed across a mile of whitecaps. I yelled at the boys to steer into the storm and keep paddling no matter what. We made it to shore and pitched four tents in a downpour, and then the boy who had been constipated all week because he could not bring himself to drop his drawers and grab hold of a tree and squat, went tearing into the woods and crapped, and then was too embarrassed to come back for paper, and wiped himself with leaves, and chose the wrong ones. Of all the leaves that God provided in the forest, these were the exact ones God did not intend us to use for that purpose. And of course, it was the fat kid. I made him come down to the lake and wash his butt with a special soap and anoint himself with lotion. His crack was neon red. He tried to be brave, but he desperately needed his mother, and I was not her. I woke up that night to hear him weeping.

I can still hear him and the trees dripping and Roger sitting by the fire exploring the frontiers of consciousness, though years have passed, and I have a 12-year-old daughter, who can go through exaltation, hilarity, despair, all in the space of a minute, and when I send her off to school in the morning, I say, “Lord, have mercy. God, have mercy.” Over and over. It is a parent’s prayer.

And here they are, on one street corner, the three great strands of life — Defenselessness, Cluelessness and Helplessness — and now the innocent children are on the bus, it swings out into traffic: Oh God, no seat belts!! Have mercy.

Some people believe that God has revealed Himself to us and not to the others, the barbarians, and it is His Will that our tribe vanquish the others and rain death and destruction on them. Others believe that our understanding of God is incomplete but that He has bestowed this beautiful world on us, and other gifts, which should be shared, and we should walk softly and praise His Name. I walk softly to the cafe and order a large mocha and pray for the forgiveness of incompetence and for mercy to children. And thanks for the day, which happens to be perfect.

“O God of all times and places, we pray for your Church, which is set today amid the perplexities of a changing order, and face to face with new tasks. Baptize her afresh in the life–giving spirit of Jesus. Bestow upon her a great responsiveness to duty, a swifter compassion with suffering, and an utter loyalty to your will. Help her to proclaim boldly the coming of your kingdom. Put upon her lips the ancient gospel of her Lord. Fill her with the prophets' scorn of tyranny, and with a Christlike tenderness for the heavy-laden and downtrodden. Bid her cease from seeking her own life, lest she lose it. Make her valiant to give up her life to humanity, that, like her crucified Lord, she may mount by the path of the cross to a higher glory; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

(#28) Amanda Gorman – Inauguration Poem Transcript, ‘The Hill We Climb’:

Americans and the world, when day comes, we ask ourselves where can we find light in this never- ending shade? The loss we carry asea we must wade. We have braved the belly of the beast. We have learned that quiet isn’t always peace. In the norms and notions of what just it isn’t always justice. And yet, the dawn is ours before we knew it. Somehow, we do it. Somehow, we have weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken, but simply unfinished. We, the successors of a country and a time where a skinny black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one.

And yes, we are far from polished, far from pristine, but that does not mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect. We are striving to forge our union with purpose. To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters, and conditions of man. And so, we lift our gazes not to what stands between us, but what stands before us. We close the divide because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside. We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another. We seek harm to none and harmony for all. Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true. That even as we grieved, we grew. That even as we hurt, we hoped. That even as we tired, we tried that will forever be tied together victorious. Not because we will never again know defeat, but because we will never again sow division.

Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one shall make them afraid. If we are to live up to her own time, then victory will not lie in the blade, but in all the bridges we’ve made. That is the promise to glade, the hill we climb if only we dare. It is because being American is more than a pride we inherit. It is the past we step into and how we repair it. We have seen a forest that would shatter our nation rather than share it. Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. This effort very nearly succeeded.

But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated. In this truth, in this faith we trust for while we have our eyes on the future, history has its eyes on us. This is the era of just redemption. We feared it at its inception. We did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour, but within it, we found the power to author a new chapter, to offer hope and laughter to ourselves so while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe? Now we assert, how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?

We will not march back to what was but move to what shall be a country that is bruised, but whole, benevolent, but bold, fierce, and free. We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation. Our blunders become their burdens. But one thing is certain, if we merge mercy with might and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children’s birthright.

So, let us leave behind a country better than one we were left with. Every breath from my bronze- pounded chest we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one. We will rise from the gold- limbed hills of the West. We will rise from the wind-swept Northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution. We will rise from the Lake Rim cities of the Midwestern states. We will rise from the sunbaked South. We will rebuild, reconcile and recover in every known nook of our nation, in every corner called our country our people diverse and beautiful will emerge battered and beautiful. When day comes, we step out of the shade aflame and unafraid. The new dawn blooms as we free it. For there is always light. If only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it. [Amen.]

(#32) Eugene Peterson (As Kingfishers Catch Fire, page 71-72):

(Charity is the granddaughter of Brenda and Charity has just experienced a visit from her other grandmother a devotedly Christian grandmother who takes her grandmotherly responsibilities of faith very seriously…this is a conversation between Charity and Brenda upon Brenda’s arrival for a visit.)

“The morning after Brenda’s arrival, Charity came into her bedroom at 5:00 A.M., crawled into bed with her, cuddled up, and said, “Grandmother, let’s not have any God-talk while you’re here, okay? I believe that God is everywhere. Let’s just get on with life.”

“I [Eugene Peterson] like Charity. I like her very much, and I think she is onto something. What she is onto is that life is at the center of what we are all about as Christians. And what she is also onto is that life leaks out of what we say when we use language impersonally, when we fail to be in relationship with the person with whom we are talking. It is especially noticeable when we are using words like God, Jesus, prayer, believe. We are left with nothing but god-talk – talk about God but with all the God left out.”

“This salvation life, this Christian life, is a life to be lived, not just talked or written about. If the life leaks out of our words, if the Holy Spirit is no longer praying in and through us as we speak, we will most certainly offend or betray Charity and her many long-suffering friends with the dreaded god- talk. Charity missed something in her first grandmother’s conversation that she was hoping her second grandmother would supply: “Let’s just get on with life!””

“Charity was asking for a relationship with her grandmother in which God is not depersonalized into god-talk but is a personal presence alive in their dailiness, a dailiness in which God and life are organically one in both speech and action!” [Amen.]

“I love growing older. But I do not want to grow old. Growing older is a process. Growing old is a conclusion. Growing older means that you are going somewhere, and that in God’s kindness and in your cooperating with God you are taking more of life’s conquests every day. Growing old means that you have reached somewhere and that’s it. Older is a journey. Old is a destination. Mind you, I believe in a destination, but my idea of a destination for life is heaven. I want everything prior to heaven to be part of my preparation for that destination. If I settle for old as my destination, I will rob myself of some of the best years of preparation for the big exit, the grand eternal journey.” ― J. “O God, just as the disciples heard Christ’s words of promise and began to eat the bread and drink the wine in the suffering of a long remembrance and in the joy of a hope, grant that we may hear your words, spoken in each thing of everyday affairs: Coffee, on our table in the morning; the simple gesture of opening a door to go out, free; the shouts of children in the parks; a familiar song, sung by an unfamiliar face; a friendly tree that has not yet been cut down.

May simple things speak to us of your mercy and tell us that life can be good. And may these sacramental gifts make us remember those who do not receive them: who have their lives cut every day, in bread absent from the table; in the door of the hospital, the prison, the welfare home that does not open; n sad children, feet without shoes, eyes without hope; in war hymns that glorify death; in deserts where once there was life.
