He has been Music Director of the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra since 1997 with whom he has toured worldwide. As guest conductor with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and as part of his tenure with the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra he has brought lesser known works of the classical masters to the recording catalogue. He is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Harbin Symphony Orchestra in China. In addition to the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Gleeson has guest conducted the RTE Concert Orchestra, The Danish Radio Concert Orchestra, Prague Philharmonia, Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, The National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Orchestra Da Camera Fiorentina, The Brohuslav Martinu Philharmonic, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonica Bulgarica, Philharmonic Orchestra Hradec Kralove, National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne, RTL Orchestra (Luxembourg), NOS Orchestra (Holland), The Rűckert Orchestra, Orchestra of the Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet (London), The Los Angeles Composers Guild Chamber Orchestra, and the Tehran Symphony Orchestra (Iran). Derek Gleeson conducted the premier CD recording of Tchaikovsky's oratorio, Ode to Joy, The Original Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture, and Prokofiev's Zdravitsa with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir (Carlton Classics/IMP Masters). His recordings with the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonica Bulgarica include premieres of contemporary American and Irish composers - the first Gaelic rendition of Prokofiev's Peter & The Wolf; Carolan Suite on Patrick Cassidy's CD, Deirdre of the Sorrows (BMG/Windham Hill); American composer Don Ray's orchestral suite, Family Portrait and the premier recording of his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra with Philharmonia Bulgarica, released on Albany Records; together with Don Ray’s Homestead Dances with the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra for Albany Records. Gleeson and The Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra toured the United States visiting 49 cities in 24 states. They also toured China, performing at the Shanghai Grand Theatre's World Expo Program, and presenting two concerts for the opening of the Beijing Festival summer season at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. These concerts were televised throughout China to over 400 million people. Subsequently, Gleeson returned to China for a Gala TV broadcast performance at The Great Hall of the People with The National Ballet Symphony Orchestra of China, before returning for a second tour with the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra, and a more recent tour with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. Gleeson is a prolific composer of film scores and is Founder and CEO of the Film Scoring Academy of Europe, and the new European Academy of Fine Arts, Sofia. He was Program Director and Co-Founder of Ireland's first MA program studies in Scoring for Film and Visual Media, in association with Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music/Pulse College/Windmill Lane Recording Studios.
