THE KINGS AND THEIR CASTLE: This season, the Kings had three sellouts - the November 5th home opener vs. Golden State, the March 30th contest against the Lakers, and the final game of the 2012-13 season on April 17th vs. the Clippers. Since the first season in Sacramento 28 seasons ago, the Kings have compiled a 636-475 (.572) home record. In 1,111 regular season home games, the Kings have sold out 853 games and hold two of highest consecutive sellout streaks in NBA history - 497 (10/25/85 - 11/4/97) and 354 (11/26/99 - 4/18/07). A total of 17,382,669 fans have witnessed those games. The Kings have also sold out 37 home playoff games (633,745 fans). Upon moving from Kansas City to Sacramento, the Kings played their first three seasons (1985-86 - 1987-88) at ARCO Arena I dubbed “The Madhouse on Market Street.” The first NBA game played in Sacramento was on October 25, 1985, when the Kings hosted the Los Angeles Clippers. The visiting Clippers escaped with a 108-104 win. The first Kings game played in the current building (ARCO Arena II, Power Balance Pavilion, and currently known as Sleep Train Arena), was on November 8, 1988, against the Seattle SuperSonics. NBA Com- missioner David Stern was among the sold-out crowd of 16,517 that witnessed the Kings fall, 97-75. KINGS OWNERSHIP: Since moving to Sacramento prior to the 1985-86 season, the Kings have had three owners. A group consisting of Joseph Benvenuti, Frank and Gregg Lukenbill, Bob A. Cook, Frank McCormick, and Stephen H. Cippa purchased the Kansas City Kings on June 8, 1983, and petitioned the NBA Board of Governors for permission to move the franchise to Sacramento in January 1985. The team was sold to Jim Thomas on April 6, 1992. Thomas remained the team’s owner until the Maloof Family purchased controlling interest and the NBA Board of Governors approved the transfer on May 7, 1999. The Kings posted a 194-380 (.338) record in the first seven seasons (1985-86 - 1991-92) in Sacramento during the first group’s ownership tenure. Under Jim Thomas, in seven seasons (1992-93 - 1998-99) the Kings went 219-323 (.404). And in the past 13 seasons (1999-00 - 2012-13), under the Maloof Family, the Kings have a 555-577 (.490) record. SO WHO HAD ROOKIE DUTIES THEN?: Since the Kings traded Thomas Robinson to Houston in the six-player trade, the Kings did not have a rookie on the roster. According to Elias Sports Bureau, it’s the first time in a decade, since the 2002-03 season, that the Kings did not have a rookie on the roster. JT - CONSISTENT EFFORT: Completing his fifth season with the Kings, Jason Thompson was a consistent contributor, averaging 10.9 ppg and 6.7 rpg (second on the team) in playing all 82 games for the Kings. Thompson came off the bench on February 2 at New York. He was the only Kings player to see action in all 82 games this season. There were 27 players in the NBA who played in 82 games this season. NO DOUBTING (ISAIAH) THOMAS: Isaiah Thomas put on a show several times this past season. At Golden State (3/27), Thomas made a career-high seven three-pointers en route to a game-high 31 points (10-18 FG, 7-12 3pt, 4-6 FT), three rebounds, seven assists, and one in 35 minutes in a 105-98 win over the Warriors. He tallied 17 points (6-8 FG, 5-6 3pt) in the third quarter. At Atlanta (2/22), Thomas tallied a game-high 30 points (9-18 FG, 4-6 3pt, 8-9 FT), falling just four points shy of matching his career high of 34. Thomas’ free throw streak ended at 46 when he missed the first of two attempts with 2:27 left in the fourth quarter. The Kings’ franchise record for most consecutive free throws made is 51 set by during the 2002-03 season. In the win over Houston, Thomas tallied 17 of his team-high-tying 23 points in the fourth quarter (3-5 FG, 2-3 3pt, 9-9 FT). He finished the game with a career-high-tying 13 free throws to extend his free throw streak to 29. Thomas’ free throw streak began on February 1 when he made all 10 of his free throw attempts at . Earlier this season, Jimmer Fredette had a free throw streak of 33 (11/23 - 12/21). Thomas hit the game-winning shot at Washington and twice this season has scored 20 or more points in a quarter. Among the sophomores, Thomas ranks fifth in assists (3.9 apg), and sixth in scoring (13.9 ppg). He also is ranked second in free throws made (251) and fourth among 2nd-year players in three-pointers made (112). THE BIG CUZ: Kings DeMarcus Cousins, in his third season, led the Kings in scoring (17.1 ppg) and rebounding (9.9 rpg, 9th in NBA). He recorded 35 double-doubles this season. It was Cousins’ second 30-point, 20- game of his career. Cousins tallied a game-high 34 points (12-16 FG, 1-2 3pt, 9-9 FT), a game-high 14 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block in 30 minutes in the Kings’ win at Phoenix (3/28). It was Cousins’ second 30-point effort of the season, and sixth of his career. On January 4 at Toronto, Cousins recorded a game-high 31 points(11-18 FG, 9-12 FT), a game-high and career-high-tying 20 rebounds, four assists, and two steals in 33 minutes. It was Cousins second career 20-point, 20-rebound performance. Cousins recorded his first career triple-double with 12 points, a team-high 10 rebounds, a game-high-tying and career-high 10 assists on Dec. 30, 2012, versus the Celtics. Last season, Cousins led the Kings in total points (1,160), total rebounds (703), blocks (75), steals (93), offensive rebounds (265), defensive rebounds (438), field goals made (448) and attempted (999), free throws made (265) and attempted (373). Cousins recorded a team-high 36 double-doubles (6th in the NBA) in 2011-12. In his first two NBA seasons with the Kings, Cousins amassed 1,402 rebounds, the most by a player in their first two seasons with the Kings in the Sacramento era. In his first three seasons with the Kings, Cousins has grabbed 2,148 rebounds, passing Chris Webber (2,109) for the most rebounds in the first three seasons with the Kings. BAYOU BOMBER: Marcus Thornton, who was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and played for LSU, finished fourth on the Kings in scoring (12.7 ppg) and first in three-pointers made (141). Thornton came off the bench in 64 games this season (started 8). At Miami (2/26), Thornton made a career-high eight three-pointers en route to a season-high 36 points off the bench. Last season, Thornton led the Kings in scoring (18.7 ppg), three pointers made (107) and attempted (310), free throw percentage (.865) and minutes played per game (34.9). ‘LIL BUCKETS’ SPARKED KINGS’ BENCH: After the Kings forced the Heat into two overtimes, LeBron James tweeted: “That Sac team got a lot of young talented players! Big Cuz, Reke, Isaiah, Lil Buckets, etc, etc.,” referring to Marcus Thornton as ‘Lil Buckets.’ Thornton scored 20 or more points off the bench 13 times in 2012-13 and twice tallied 30 or more points. Thornton tallied a season-high 36 points (11-18 FG, 8-12 3pt, 6-8 FT) coming off the bench at Miami (2/26). 4 SACRAMENTO KINGS 2012-13 GAMENOTES THE NEW GUYS DID WELL FITTING IN: Patrick Patterson, Toney Douglas, and Cole Aldrich did a good job fitting in with their new team. Douglas scored 17 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter to help the Kings defeat the Clippers (3/19). At Golden State (3/6), Douglas’ defense helped harass Golden State’s into a 3-of-11 shooting from the field and a 13-point night. Since coming over from the Rockets, Patterson shot 50 percent or better from the field in 14 games. Patterson scored in double-figures in nine games and has recorded one double-double with the Kings. He scored 22 points (9-12 FG, 2-2 3pt, 2-2 FT) and grabbed five rebounds at the Lakers (3/17) in his second straight start. Aldrich set a career-highs in points (12), rebounds (12) and blocks (4) at Houston (4/14) and then followed that effort the next night at Oklahoma City (4/15) with a career-high-tying 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds en route to recording his second straight double-double. FEWEST TURNOVERS IN TWO GAMES: The Kings had a season-low five turnovers against Chicago on March 13 and then turned the ball over six times at the Lakers on March 17. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marked the first time (since 1970 when turnovers become an official stat) the Kings had two straight games with six or fewer turnovers in each game and also the first time the Kings had a total of 11 turnovers or less in two games. Against the Bulls, the Kings had a season-low five turnovers and tied a franchise record for fewest in a half with just one in the first half. KINGS HOSTED HARDWOOD CLASSICS “RETRO NIGHTS”: The Sacramento Kings celebrated an era of franchise history, wearing its 1990s-styled retro black and purple uniforms during five home games as part of NBA Hardwood Classics Nights. Sacramento is one of only seven NBA clubs to participate in Classics Nights this season, joining Atlanta, Chicago, Indiana, Miami, Milwaukee and Phoenix. Immortalized by fan favorites and team legends of yesteryear such as , Lionel Simmons, and others, the two-toned, checkered-sided alternate jersey worn for the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons remains an iconic piece of Sacramento Kings lore. The games the Kings wore the retro jerseys: 2/04/13 @ Utah, 2/09/13 vs. Utah, 2/12/13 @ Memphis, 2/13/13 @ Dallas, 2/19/13 vs. San Antonio, 02/26/13 @ Miami, 03/06/13 @ Golden State, 03/08/13 vs. Phoenix, 03/10/13 vs. Milwaukee, 03/13/13 vs. Chicago. RECORD ROUT: On March 13, the Kings defeated the Bulls, 121-79, a 42-point win. The margin of victory was: LARGEST MARGIN OF VICTORY IN NBA THIS SEASON (1) the largest of the season (previous was 36 in a 119-83 win over Charlotte on March 3; (2) the largest in the PTS SCORE DATE series between the Kings and Bulls (previous was 39, 119-80, vs. Chicago on Feb. 8, 2000); (3) the largest since 45 Oklahoma City 114, Charlotte 69 11/26/12 154-98 win vs. Philadelphia on Jan. 2, 1993; (4) the third largest in Kings franchise history. Sacramento had just 45 Oklahoma City 119, New Orleans 74 2/27/13 five turnovers, one in the first half. It was the fifth time in Kings franchise history the Kings had just one turnover 45 Houston 125, @Utah 80 1/28/13 in a half, the last time coming on Mar. 29, 2006 at Portland. The Kings’ win also ended a five-game losing streak 42 Sacramento 121, Chicago 79 3/13/13 to the Bulls. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the last time a team under .500 won by more than 40 points over a team that was over .500 was on Feb. 7, 2009 when the Nets defeated the Nuggets, 114-70, in New Jersey. The largest margin of victory in the NBA this season was 45, done three times (twice by Oklahoma City and once by Houston). FOUR 20-POINT SCORERS: The Kings had four 20-point scorers in their 121-112 win over Phoenix on March 8. Isaiah Thomas (27), Tyreke Evans (25), Marcus Thornton (23), and DeMarcus Cousins (22). WHAT A 3RD QUARTER!: The Kings exploded for a season-high 43 points in the third quarter against the Bobcats. The 43 points matched a Charlotte franchise record for most points scored in a quarter by an opponent, matching the Nuggets (2nd quarter, 1/14/08 at Charlotte) and Trail Blazers (3rd quarter, 3/1/07 at Portland). The Kings fell three points shy of matching the Sacramento-era record 46 (accomplished several times) and four points shy of the Sleep Train Arena record of 47 set by Seattle (2nd quarter, 2/17/02). John Salmons, who had started the game missing his first four field goal attempts and was 1-of-5 in the first half, scored 19 points in the third quarter, making 5-of-8 from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
