Its primary mandate was – and is – two-fold: to promote energy security amongst its member countries through collective response to physical disruptions in oil supply, and provide authoritative research and analysis on ways to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for its 28 member countries and beyond. The IEA carries out a comprehensive programme of energy co-operation among its member countries, each of which is obliged to hold oil stocks equivalent to 90 days of its net imports. The Agency’s aims include the following objectives: n Secure member countries’ access to reliable and ample supplies of all forms of energy; in particular, through maintaining effective emergency response capabilities in case of oil supply disruptions. n Promote sustainable energy policies that spur economic growth and environmental protection in a global context – particularly in terms of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions that contribute to climate change. n Improve transparency of international markets through collection and analysis of energy data. n Support global collaboration on energy technology to secure future energy supplies and mitigate their environmental impact, including through improved energy efficiency and development and deployment of low-carbon technologies. n Find

  • Developing Environmental Concepts for Vietnamese Coal Mines
Mining and Environment in Vietnam, Research Work of the Research Association Mining and Environment (RAME), Status Report 2011 1 Katrin Broemme , Harro Stolpe EE+E Institute of Environmental Engineering and Ecology, Ruhr University of Bochum, 44780 Bochum, Germany Abstract The RAME research project started its first activities in Vietnam at the end of 2005. The aim of the BMBF (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research) funded research and de- velopment project is to develop methods to reduce the environmental impacts due to hardcoal mining in Quang Ninh province by selected technical measures and enhancement of the envi- ronmental management. Based on a preliminary survey the fields dump stabilization and re- cultivation, mine water treatment, dust mitigation and after mining landuse were identified as main research fields. Currently, six partprojects are ongoing and one partproject is submitted for approval. Each partproject is divided into four working phases: investigation; conceptual design, discussion and approval; implementation and post-processing. The paper gives an overview on the status quo of the ongoing research works in the partprojects and their first results. Keywords: coal mining; environmental management; mine water treatment; waste rock dump; dust mitigation, after mining landuse 1 Introduction In 2005 the Research Association Mining and Environment (RAME) and the Vietnam Na- tional Coal – Mineral Industries Group (VINACOMIN, former VINACOAL Vietnam Na- tional Coal Corporation) agreed on a collaboration in order to develop environmental con- cepts and measures for Quang Ninh hardcoal mining areas as VINACOMIN did not have much experience in environmental protection work at that time [2]. After a pre-feasibility study performed from 2005 to 2006 both sides decided to go on with the collaboration and started several joint research projects whose results are implemented in Quang Ninh.

  • Journal of MMIJ
Vol.132, No.11, 2016 Journal of MMIJ Characteristics of Spontaneous Combustion of Anthracite in Vietnamese Coal Mines* by Le Trung TUYENa, Nhu Viet TUANb, Kotaro OHGAc and Takehiro ISEId Including Vietnamese anthracite coal mines, it had been said that anthracite coal mine hardly starts spontaneous combustion1); however, at some of underground anthracite coal mines of Vietnam, several outbreaks of spontaneous combustion have been reported since 2004. The authors have been involved into site investigation, countermeasures as well as analysis of the data of those anthracite coal mines and one sub-bituminous coal mine in northern part of Vietnam. In this paper, special characteristics of spontaneous combustion of anthracite coal mines and a sub-bituminous coal mine and site counter measures are discussed. Indication gasses of spontaneous combustion of anthracite might be limited into only CO and H2 gasses in contrast with the cases of spontaneous combustion of bituminous, which generate many kinds of hydrocarbon gasses. From the view point of prevention of spontaneous combustion, problems of site mining conditions are also discussed. KEY WORDS: Spontaneous Combustion, Anthracite, Coal Mine, Vietnam, Indication Gasses 1. Introduction of Vietnamese coal mines Major Vietnamese coal fields locate in several provinces of northern part of Vietnam in which Quang Ninh province produces the mass part of coal in Vietnam from both open pit and underground mines. Most of those coal mines produce anthracite. In Vietnam the demand for coal is rapidly increasing in recent years at a rate around 15% per year, which is more than double of economic growth rate and resulted into increase of underground production ratio up to nearly 55%.

E3S Web of Conferences 35, 06002 (2018) https://doi.org/10.1051/e3sconf/20183506002 POL-VIET 2017 Knowledge Exchange between Poland and Vietnam in Mining and Geology – the Status Quo and Future Development Nga Nguyen1, *, and Nguyet Pham2 1 Mining Management Department, Faculty of Economic and Business Administration, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, 10000 Hanoi, Vietnam 2 Informatics for Economics Department, Faculty of Informatics, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, 10000 Hanoi, Vietnam Abstract. From the beginning of the 21st century, knowledge exchange between Poland and Vietnam in mining and geology has been focusing in technology, education and training. Since years, Polish academic and commercial partners have been developing a close collaboration with Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited. Major outcomes of the collaboration are installations and operation of mining equipments and machines in Vietnamese mining companies, and excellent training programs for graduate and post graduate students and mining staff for both countries, etc. From aspects of knowledge management in globalization, the article highlights the outstanding outcomes of knowledge exchanges between the two countries, outlines cultural and economic challenges for the exchange and proposes some improvement in the future. Key words – knowledge exchange, mining knowledge, Polish – Vietnamese corporation. 1 Introduction The collaboration of Poland and Vietnam has been being developed since 1950s. Since then, Poland has received thousand researchers and students from Vietnam for research and educational programs. During the time 1960–1980s, scientific collaboration was mainly at state levels. To date, this partnership has been promoted at different levels of institutes, universities and organizations, and private activities.

  • Cross Measure Degasification Pilot Project
COAL MINE METHANE PROJECT OPPORTUNITY PILOT PROJECT ON METHANE GAS DRAINAGE IN KHE CHAM COAL MINE QUANG NINH PROVINCE, VIETNAM OVERVIEW OF COAL MINE METHANE PROJECT: Khe Cham Coal Mine is a subsidiary company of the Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industry Holding Corporation Limited (Vinacomin) with annual coal production of 1.5 million tonnes per year. The mine is located in Quang Ninh province, Vietnam. Khe Cham is one of the gassiest mines in Vietnam and a methane-related explosion causing 11 fatalities occurred in 2009. Installation of a gas drainage system as proposed by Vinacomin - Institute of Mining Science and Technology (IMSAT) in 2012 has reduced the methane concentration of ventilation air by 0.2 to 0.6 percent. Average methane concentration of ventilation air before installation of cross-measure boreholes was 0.8 percent with periods of concentration reaching 1.0 to 1.3 percent. Since implementation of the drainage system, the mine has not had to shut off electricity due to high methane concentration. Ventilation costs have decreased by 30.4 percent and coal production capacity of the mine is increased by 33.4 percent. The success of this project demonstrates a solution to methane-related safety issues at Vinacomin’s mines as well as presenting an opportunity for CMM recovery and utilization projects for economical and environmental benefits. The project ultimately plans to produce electricity from drained methane, reducing emissions by over 360 thousand tons of CO2e annually. ESTIMATED ANNUAL EMISSION REDUCTIONS: 0.36 MMTCO2E
