“I’D LIKE A LABEL FROM” SERIES Keith Osborne has produced a number of brewery histories (most of which have yet to appear in the Newsletter) for this series which highlights early breweries for which, in most cases, no paper label is known to exist. There could, of course, be two possible explanations for this absence – either they were produced but none survive or have been found so far. Alternatively, that the brewery concerned did not produce paper labels on bottles at all. The breweries in this series are listed here in alphabetical order

Adcock & Pacey Co Ltd, Melton Mowbray (now published - NL 4/2020) Adnams & Son, Newbury Baker Hope Brewery, Hertford Blencoe & Co, Cannock Boulters Shire Oak, Walsall Castle Sons & Woods, Banwell Copple Bothers, Ecclestone F A Crooke, Guildford Brewery Giles & Harrap, Merthry Tydfil Henry Spencer, Whitehaven Jarman & Co. OTHER NOTES A paper entitled “A Critical Study of Labels” by D.H.Tew (originally featured in The Brewers Guardian in July 1949) was reproduced in NLs in 2004 and concluded in 1/2005. Well worth a read but, sadly, not illustrated with the labels mentioned. The NL Editor’s challenge to members to provide the images seems to have gone unheeded!

“Championship Beers” identifying awards at Brewers Exhibitions etc were featured in the following NLs – 1/2016. 3/2016, 5/2016, 1/2017 and 4/2017. An e-book was produced by Keith Osborne and released in April 2020 combining the 5 parts.

NEWSLETTER PRODUCTION NOTES In 1959, four “Bulletins” were issued, professionally printed with advertisements. From 1960 until 1975 the NL was foolscap black and white From 1975, A4 paper was used but NL still black and white NL first appeared in A5 booklet form (still black and white) with issue 4/1980 Colour label illustrations first appeared in NL 6/1993 Full colour NLs started with issue NL 4/2011

ADDENDUM THE BREWERY HISTORY SOCIETY UP TO, AND INCLUDING, JOURNAL 181 INDEX TO 135 BREWERY HISTORIES

The Brewery History Society (BHS) has published a journal since 1972 which includes many articles on the histories of breweries worldwide. There is, however, no alphabetical index of these and so with the approval of the BHS we have produced the following index of UK brewery histories that we have been able to identify. Members who also belong to the BHS will be able to access these in the journal number(s) mentioned. If you are not a BHS member but wish to read one of the articles listed then please contact us for advice.

Journals for the period from 1972 to 1983 were numbered, for example, 1/1 where the first digit represents the year of publication (1 = 1972, up to 11 for 1983) and the second digit relates to the issue number in that year. From 1983 the journals were numbered consecutively from number 38 to 181 (Winter 2019)
