It serves as an excellent starting point for African safari trips around Kenya. Nairobi is Africa’s 4th largest city and is a vibrant and exciting place, and although it has developed a reputation which keeps tourist visits brief, there are some fascinating attractions: its cafe culture, unbridled nightlife, the National Museum, the Karen Blixen Museum and most notably just 20 minutes from the city centre wild lions and buffalo roam in the world’s only urban game reserve. Make sure you pay a visit to the elephant orphanage operated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Day Itinerary On arrival at JKIA, you are met by our representative for transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day will be at leisure or on optional activities arranged upon request and are payable direct. Lunch and dinner on own account. Included Bed & Breakfast P a g e | 5 Day 2: Ikweta Safari Camp, Meru National Park Meru National Park Situated east of Meru, in beautiful Kenya, Meru National Park is one of the most popular parks in Kenya. Covering over 800 square kilometres, this park is wild and beautiful featuring diverse scenery with lush swamplands, thick jungle, vast savannah, and no less than thirteen rivers. Game to view includes some of the less regularly sighted animals like oryx, lesser kudu, duiker, dik-dik and over 300 species of birds have been recorded. It is here that Else the famous lion from the book and movie ‘Born Free’ lived out the latter part of her life and is buried. Visitors can soak up the spectacular views of Mount Kenya, spot game along the Tana River and view the cascading Adamson’s Falls. Day Itinerary Depart Nairobi in the early hours of the morning after breakfast and head out through the central highlands towards Mt. Kenya. Your scenic drive will take you through the pineapple growing and coffee farming areas. You will as well have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of day to day rural life in Kenya. Arrive for late lunch at your lodge. In the early evening embark on a “shamba walk” through the small scale farms for a hike on “Skull” hill. From the top enjoy a panoramic view of Meru national Park as well as the surrounding ranges of Nyambene and Aberdare. Return to camp for dinner and overnight Ikweta Sfari Camp (full board) Included Bed & Breakfast Day 4: The Ark Lodge, Aberdare National Park Aberdare National Park Located northeast of Nairobi, Kenya, the Aberdare National Park was created to protect the Aberdare Mountain Range, the peaks of which soar to 3930 metres. The landscape is characterised by steep forested slopes, expansive moors, and deep ravines scattered with cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear streams and rushing rivers. The park is inhabited by a variety of African wildlife such as: elephant, lion, spotted hyena, rhino, black leopard and the very elusive bongo antelope that lives in the high altitude bamboo forests. The park offers the perfect environment for picnics, camping in the moorlands, trout fishing in the rivers, and excellent bird watching with over 250 species of birds including hawks, eagles, sunbirds and plovers. Day Itinerary Check out early for a circumnavigated drive around the northern tip of Mt. Kenya to Nyeri. This scenic drive takes you across the ranges that are world known for sheltering the snow capped Mt. Kenya – The highest peak in Kenya as the second highest mountain in Africa. Arrive for lunch at Aberdares Country Club. Later transfer to your tree hotel for the night. Dinner and overnight The Ark Overnight: The Ark Lodge The Ark has four viewing areas from which to observe the ever-present animal activity at the waterhole and saltlick. There is also a ground level hide - the perfect spot for the discerning photographer. From this vantage point, photos of animals can be taken at eye-level. As described in the book, Haven Under the Hill, Monty Brown says, "In this intimate recess one can almost, but not quite, pat the animals, hear their sounds and smell the aroma of the night. This is a magical corner, where there is close contact with the essence that tells of unexplored Africa, and where, very often, the visitor may enjoy in solitary state the beauty of it all." So as not to miss any animal sightings, the resident guide will buzz your room when special animals come to the waterhole. Simply throw on your provided robe and slippers, grab your camera and view nightlife at the waterhole! P a g e | 7 Included Bed & Breakfast Day 5: Flamingo Hill Tented Camp, Lake Nakuru National Park Lake Nakuru National Park Located in the Great Rift Valley surrounded by yellow acacia woodlands and bushy shrublands, the Lake Nakuru National Park was created to protect the Lake and its large flocks of Lesser Flamingo, which are drawn to the algae that flourish in the saline waters of this soda lake. The national park is inhabited by over 50 mammal species including hippo, black and white rhino, Rothschild giraffe, buffalo and eland. Known as a bird watcher’s paradise, the park is home to over 450 bird species. Visitors can look forward to hiking through the scenic landscape, picnicking next to this magnificent lake, and spotting an array of wildlife on a game drive. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the beautiful Makalia Waterfall. Day Itinerary Depart after breakfast for the drive taking you into the heart of the Great Rift Valley. Stop over at Thompson falls and later drive on to the valley floor into Nakuru National Park. Enjoy your lunch followed by an evening game drive until sunset.
