On behalf of the Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce – Welcome! The Chamber enjoys a long and successful history of serving our business community. Originally founded in 1938 by three local businessmen as The Defiance Civic Club, Inc., the organization’s initial mission was “to promote unity of action for the welfare of the city of Defiance, Ohio.” In 1941 the nonprofit became known as The Defiance Chamberof Commerce and evolved to The Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce in 1966. To further support educational opportunities throughout our community, the Chamber established the Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation in 2012. Defiance is a great place to live and work - a vibrant and progressive community that is rich in history, small town experiences, strong educational systems, and a superior quality of life built on family values. For more than 80 years the Chamber has been serving the greater Defiance area as an effective community development organization. The Chamber is a vital connector and has remained true to its purpose of promoting industrial, commercial, professional, civic and general interests of the community. The Chamber is strongly committed to continuing to help build an even greater community through our efforts to serve, connect and promote our members, improve the business climate, offer educational support for the workforce, and advance the development of the area.

A national survey of 2,000 adults, conducted by the Atlanta-based strategic consulting firm Schapiro Group, revealed that being active in a local chamber of commerce is aneffective business strategy, and that two- thirds of consumers believe that such companies use good business practices, are reputable, care about their customers, and are involved in the community. The study indicates that local chamber membership has consistent and powerful benefits for small business members, and small businesses are the largest segment of the Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce membership. The Chamber is a leading business advocate and provides multiple opportunities for networking, educational development for future leaders, and money-saving programs that benefit both your business and your employees. Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Inc. The Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation was established in 2013 by the Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce. The Foundation was created for charitable, educational and scientific purposes. The Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation Reverse Raffle serves as the largest fundraiser for the Foundation. The funds that areraised from this event help to administer various programs within the foundation including but not limited to: support of economic development, scholarships, support of awards for the Defiance County Fair, and support of awards for the Defiance County Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Mayor Mike McCann Mike McCann, a native of Defiance, was elected as the Mayor of the City of Defiance in November 2015, and re- elected in 2019. Mayor McCann spends a majority of his time considering ways to provide service to the community as efficiently as possible, abating nuisances and blight, creating an environment to promote economic development, seeking ways to improve the quality of life, and housing opportunities and neighborhood revitalization. Mayor McCann’s goal is to strengthen every aspect of the Defiance community to continue to make Defiance a Great Place to Live and Work!
Commissioner David Kern David Kern was elected Commissioner for the term commencing January 3rd, 2021. With a passion for public service, David has held numerous positions throughout his career in hopes of bettering his community for the next generation. He has served on the Ayersville Local Board of Education for the past 5 years and is currently a Lieutenant with South Richland Fire Department and President of the Ayersville Education Foundation. David is a tireless advocate for issues regarding mental health and drug addiction, public safety, education, and economic development.
Commissioner Mick Pocratsky Mick Pocratsky was elected Commissioner for the term commencing January 2, 2017. Prior to becoming Commissioner, Mick worked for Defiance County Juvenile Probation for 27 years, serving as Chief for five years. He also served on Hicksville Village Council for 20 years, holding the President seat for two years, and also served on the Parks Board for six years.
Commissioner Ryan Mack Ryan Mack was elected Commissioner for the term commencing January 1, 2015. Memberships include Veterans of Foreign Wars, Farm Bureau, Disabled American Veterans, National Rifle Association and Defiance Area Fish and Game Association. Ryan spent six years in the United States Army with one tour in Afghanistan. Ryan is looking forward to continuing his service to the people of our County as Defiance County Commissioner.
Representative Craig S. Riedel Representative Craig S. Riedel is currently serving his second term as state representative to the 82nd Ohio House District, which includes Defiance, Paulding and Van Wert counties, as well as part of Auglaize County. He retired in June of 2015 from Nucor Vulcraft Group in order to follow his passion for public service and represent his friends and fellow citizens in northwestern Ohio. He volunteers his time freely with community projects and activities.
State Senator Rob McColley State Senator Rob McColley is serving in the Ohio Senate after being appointed in December 2017, and elected in 2018. He represents the 1st Senate District, which includes Defiance, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert, and Williams counties, as well as parts of Auglaize, Fulton, and Logan counties. Before being elected State Senator, he served in the Community Improvement Corporation of Henry County, where he oversaw economic development efforts for the county and worked to improve local workforce development efforts between manufacturers and schools in Henry and Williams counties. Congressman Bob Latta Since 2007, Congressman Bob Latta has served the people of Ohio’s Fifth Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Throughout his tenure, Congressman Latta has advocated for the interests of the people of Northwest and West Central Ohio through policies that further economic prosperity and job creation. His top priorities include balancing the budget, maintaining a strong national defense, and implementing commonsense government reforms.
Senator Rob Portman Rob Portman is a United States Senator from the state of Ohio, a position he has held since he was first elected in 2010, running a campaign that focused on common-sense conservative ideas to help create jobs and get the deficit under control. During his Senate tenure, Rob has worked on legislation ranging fromAddiction and Recovery, Human Trafficking, Great Lakes, National Parks and Career and Technical Education. Rob has continued fighting to expand U.S. exports and crack down on unfair and illegal imports.
12 Location & Transportation Defiance is located in the heart of the Midwest
Defiance offers access to your major city markets from Chicago to Pittsburgh, Detroit to Cincinnati. It is conveniently located within a 45 minute drive of both Toledo, Ohio and Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Defiance area features a wide range of buildings and ready-to-build sites for development. The city of Defiance features four interchanges with new U.S. Route 24, the fastest, most efficient highway route connecting Fort Wayne and Toledo. Also intersecting the city are State Routes 18, 15, 66, 111 and 281. U.S. 127 and State Route 18 intersect in the Village of Sherwood and State Routes 18, 49, and 2 pass through the Village of Hicksville. The Ohio Turnpike (I-80/I-90) spans the state east to west and is less than twenty miles from the City of Defiance and the Village of Hicksville. Dual rail-served sites on the CSX dual mainline route from Chicago to the East coast ports or on the Napoleon, Defiance & Western Railway with connection to NS Railroad, offer low-cost transportation advantages for heavy industry or global market distribution centers. The Port of Toledo, located on Lake Erie, is less than 50 miles away from the City of Defiance. Toledo Express and Fort Wayne International Airports, served by several national and international airlines, are located within an hour’s drive from Defiance County. The Defiance County Memorial Airport features a 4,200-foot PLASI lighted runway with instrument approach, and provides facilities for corporate and private aircraft.

The most basic factor could be the strong Midwestern work ethic possessed by many Defiance residents. A strong educational system trains Defiance citizens from grade school through college as they prepare to enter the workforce.
Defiance County has a work force of over 18,000 and attracts employees from the entire region. The Defiance area hosts a variety of manufacturing firms and agri-business companies, many of which are internationally known.
The Defiance County CIC hired a workforce development manager in 2017 and formed a workforce committee that meets monthly and consists of a variety of employers, school officials, county employees who are working together to create new ideas. Ideas discussed have been such things as starting to talk to students at a younger age about the opportunities in skilled trades and how modern manufacturing is an exciting, good paying career path. With the average age of an employee being 50 years and higher, businesses across the nation are battling a shortage of qualified skilled workers to join the workforce.
The Defiance County Economic Development office works closely with the private and public sectors to enhance the retention and expansion of jobs in the area. The office is funded through the Defiance County Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) and is available for issuance of industrial revenue bonds, enterprise zone applications and other economic development assistance. 14 Business & Industry Public Safety When it comes to our safety, we all like to take the necessary precautions to protect ourselves from whatever lies before us. In both the City of Defiance and Defiance County, public officials have a history of being responsive to the needs of the citizens they serve. Whether it be a car accident on one of our many highways, a home medical emergency or an unexpected disaster, our local emergency personnel are there to serve. Defiance Police Department The mission of the Defiance Police Department is to maintain public trust by providing quality services in partnership with our community. The Defiance Police Department is composed of 12 Patrol Vehicles, A Chief of Police, an Assistant Chief of Police, 24 Road Officers consisting of 3 Lieutenants, 3 Sergeants, 18 Patrolman, a Detective Sergeant, a Detective Patrolman, a Narcotics Officer, and a K-9 Unit. Several officers are also trained for bike patrol which is used seasonally and for special events. The force operates 24 hours a day with three eight hour shifts and a typical minimum staffing of four officers per shift. Defiance Fire & Rescue The fire department consists of 29 full-time and 2 part-time members. Equipment includes 2 engines, one 75 foot aerial ladder truck, 90 foot aerial tower and 3 rescue vehicles. Members of the department have completed at least 280 hours of training and the fire protection class is a 3. Defiance County Sheriff’s Office The chief law-enforcement office of the county is the sheriff, who is elected to a four-year term. The road patrol division at the Defiance County Sheriff’s Office is comprised of 15 Road Deputies, 4 Sergeants and 3 K-9’s. Road units are responsible for handling all types of complaints in Defiance County’s 12 townships, ranging from minor traffic accidents to homicides. They are responsible for patrolling 902 miles of Federal, State, County, and Township roads in the 414 square miles that make up Defiance County. Hicksville Police Department The Hicksville Police Department is comprised of eight full time sworn police officers, two sworn part time patrolmen, two sworn auxiliary officers and one civilian office employee. 16 Calling Defiance Home The river banks and gently rolling landscape of the Defiance area have displayed an expanding tapestry of fine family homes, loved by those who live within them. Close to downtown Defiance, adjacent to the Maumee and Auglaize Rivers, stands a variety of well-kept older homes, some dating from the turn of the century. Enhancing Agriculture and the Environment Ohio’s diverse agricultural, horticultural and forestry industries contribute more than $100 billion to the state’s economy every year. OSU Extension agriculture and natural resources (ANR) programs assist with technology, marketing and educational support – protecting Ohio’s position in the global marketplace. OSU Extension also works to help local residents and community leaders enhance and sustain the environment and natural areas throughout the state, balancing economic advancement with environmental sustainability. 22 Education Local schools have a proud tradition in the Defiance area and offer a myriad of opportunities for students at all levels including a trade and technical school equipped to prepare the area’s emerging workforce, faith-based schools, and schools of higher education. Public School Opportunities Defiance City Schools In the spring of 2007, construction and design began for a new elementary school in Defiance. This new building combined all of the Defiance City public elementary schools grades Pre-K to 5th into one complex building with a multitude of opportunities for the students that attend. The first day of class was held on January 5th, 2009. The new school consists of over 1200 students and 120 staff members. The Defiance Grades 6-12 School is a state-of-the-art educational setting that will give our young people everything they need to become college- and career- ready in a highly competitive world. Designed for today’s project-based learning, our new school also is environmentally efficient and secure. The inviting campus makes the most of natural light and includes a “teaching stair”, a modern media center, state-of-the-art science rooms, a CAD Lab, and Engineering Tech Lab, updated band and choir facilities with technologically upgraded practice rooms and additional ensemble spaces, and an arena-style gymnasium. All of the district’s schools are now on one campus.
Northeastern Local Schools (Tinora) Northeastern Local School District covers one hundred- seventeen (117) square miles and is located in the northeastern corner of Defiance County, Ohio and serves the four townships of Tiffin, Noble, Richland and Adams. The PK-12 student population consists of approximately 1083 students who are instructed by a staff of 88. Our district is one to one chromebook use for students. This, along with on-line electronic class offerings at our Tinora High School truly enhances our students’ learning. Most importantly, the mission of our school district is to educate, motivate and graduate students to live in a changing world. The completion of the new Middle School and High School building occurred in 2020.The state-of-the-art building will be a community establishment for many decades to come. The building houses grades 5-12, a cafetorium, music wing, ag department wing, middle school gym, high school gym, playground, media center and administrative offices (high school, middle school, athletic, and central). Northeastern Local Schools is also in the process of building a Performing Arts Center with a completion date of Spring 2022. Our theme for all our students, faculty and staff is “Learning to Believe and Achieve”, and we are dedicated to that theme. We want our students to believe in themselves so that they can achieve their academic goals as well as their goals in life.
Central Local Schools (Fairview) Central Local Schools, a 166-square-mile district located in central Defiance County and southern Williams County, is comprised of three schools: Fairview High School, which serves students in grades 9-12; Fairview Middle School, which serves students in grades 6-8; and Fairview Elementary School, which serves students in grades PK-5. Situated on one campus, “The Home of the Apaches” is approximately eight miles south of Bryan and twelve miles west of Defiance. The Board of Education and administration work as a team with honesty and integrity, employing a faculty and staff that is both dedicated and an inspiration to its students. Central Local, in partnership with its large community, provides a safe learning environment for its student body with a mission for each student to realize his/her fullest potential as a life-long learner in a global society. The district is proud of its unique ability to offer a tremendous and caring educational environment as evidenced by a 14:1 student to teacher ratio. Ayersville Local Schools Ayersville Local School is located near the rural, southeast corner of Defiance County. The Ayersville School District has a proud and historic tradition of academic excellence. In September of 2018, Ayersville opened a new 126,000 square foot K-12 building serving approximately 800 students. As a small district, Ayersville provides many opportunities to its students. The inclusion of technology has been a priority. Ayersville is in its 10th year of one-to-one initiative. The initiative began with the high school, included the middle school, and followed by grades 1-6 two years ago. Independence Dam State Park Independence Dam State Park is situated on 525 acres and sits along the banks of the Maumee River. The original wooden dam was constructed in the 1800’s for the canal system. In 1924 the cement dam replaced the original structure and this is what we see today when we visit the park.
The natural confluence of the Maumee and Auglaize rivers, upstream from Independence Dam State Park, played a large role in the development of northwestern Ohio. The waters of these two rivers are a valuable natural resource for both industry and recreation.

Thoreau Wildlife Sanctuary Defiance College, in partnership with the Diehl Family Foundation, established the Thoreau Wildlife Sanctuary in 1989. More than 200 acres of farmland were converted to prairie, meadow, deciduous forest, wetland, and white pine forest habitats. Management of these habitats is ongoing and has been integral to the development of the Restoration Ecology major at Defiance College. Restoration Ecology at Defiance College students have planted more than 40,000 trees on the Sanctuary property, as well as planting herbaceous terrestrial and wetland plants. Further, students have conducted research involving reintroduction of bobwhite quail and ringneck pheasants, prairie burns, and distributions of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Auglaize Golf Club Auglaize Golf Club is located south of Defiance on the Auglaize River. The front nine holes are completely surrounded by a body of water with dense foliage. St. Mike’s Golf Course St. Mike’s Golf Course is situated just north of Defiance in a peaceful, rural setting. The Department of Job & Family Services serves the residents of Defiance County by administrating public assistance programs of the state and federal government, providing workforce investment opportunities through the Ohio Means Jobs center, investigating complaints of suspected child abuse and neglect, and providing needed supportive services. Our mission is to serve the residents of Defiance County utilizing the programs and dollars available to us, to help people improve their lives through economic self-sufficiency, protect and provide for those unable to meet their own needs, and to enhance the community for future generations. In 2013, the Defiance County Commissioners collaborated with Paulding County Consolidated Job and Family Services to create Defiance/Paulding Consolidated Job and Family Services. This past year, the agency focused on the expansion and enhancement 6879 Evansport Rd., Ste. A, Defiance of the Comprehensive Case Management and Employment Program (CCMEP) for young adults. The agency continues to experience an increase in new cases. The agency maintains an internal Quality Assurance program to ensure case accuracy and timeliness. The Children Services unit has transitioned to being more comprehensive and mobile when working in the community. The unit also began operating under a new internal QA program designed to improve outcomes and responsiveness to the community. The agency’s Income Maintenance staff were recognized by the state of Ohio for payment accuracy in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Assistance) and our Fraud department continues to receive state recognition. Maumee Valley Planning Organization Since 1973, MVPO has been developing and implementing joint regional decisions, providing grant management, planning, and technical services to local governments, and identifying and solving problems best addressed at the regional level. 39 Transportation MVPO is designated as the Regional Transportation Planning Organization (RTPO) for the five-county region. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) provides funding to the RTPO to perform planning tasks that strengthen and formalize the rural consultation and transportation planning process in our Northwest Ohio region. 41 Veterans Affairs Office Defiance County has an active Veterans Advocacy Office servicing over 4,000 veterans with a multitude of VA benefits to include compensation, pension and Aid and Attendance. Over ten million dollars is direct deposited annually into veterans’ bank accounts in Defiance County. History is not contained in textbooks, but in our community and its institutions— the local library, museum, archives and its historic buildings and places. These are where we find what we call primary sources, and they help form our identity as a people and community. These are the tools by which we educate ourselves about our heritage that empowers us to envision a better future.
The Andrew L. Tuttle Memorial Museum has been created to foster an understanding and appreciation of the diverse history of the City of Defiance and its immediate surrounding area 514 West Third Street, Defiance by responsibly collecting, preserving, interpreting and exhibiting items from the area’s natural and cultural history. The museum is owned by the City of Defiance with operation overseen by the city historian and a board of advisors that reports to the Defiance City Council.

Defiance Community Cultural Council (DCCC) Defiance Community Cultural Council (DCCC) is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the promotion of the performing arts, communication, and historic preservation in Defiance, Ohio. The organization is housed at the Stroede Center for the Arts along with Defiance Community Television (DCTV), the local public access station and DCCC partner in advocacy for the arts. DCCC provides opportunities for Defiance area citizens to come together, to see, to listen, to talk, to share the rich traditions of their cultures, and to welcome and embrace the diversity of all people. As a result, Defiance will become a more vibrant community with a sense of historical identity, cultural awareness and receptivity, a respect for historic preservation, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Together with DCTV, they produce over 30 events annually for live stage and for cable television access. These events include the Music In Your Park Series, the Jazz Festival, the Bands & More Series, the Sunday at the Stroede Series, and the Young Audience Series, along with an annual feature concert as well as Cinema at the Stroede. Young People’s Theatre Guild and Fort Defiance Players hold productions at the Stroede Center for the Arts. The Stroede Center is also available for rental for concerts, studio recitals, presentations, private group film screenings, weddings, and business meetings. Defiance Community Television (DCTV) Defiance Community Television (DCTV) is a local digital public access station on channel 1021. Programming is offered every day, Sunday – Saturday, and their programming schedule can be found at www.dctv5.org and also in The Crescent News Entertainment Guide. Some of the programming offered includes: entertainment events, historical events, DHS sports, Defiance City Council meetings, Defiance School Board meetings, Ask the Mayor program, and religious services. DCTV has been producing local public access television programming since 1985. As a member of the Alliance for Community Media, they are recognized for the work they do as a public, education, and government (PEG) public access station in the United States. The station receives funding as part of the municipal agreement with the local cable provider and the City of Defiance. DCTV is continually seeking volunteers to join them as they capture events that reflect the culture of the Defiance community. DCTV encourages community members to produce programs by offering camera operations, lighting design, audio capture, and post production editing at their facility.

Historic Homes of Defiance Since 1999, Historic Homes of Defiance has worked to inventory the historic homes found in Defiance County and the commercial structures of Defiance City’s Original Plat. We have worked to place the entire downtown of Defiance on the National Register of Historic Places. Our “Save Our School” Committee worked diligently to bring attention to the historic Defiance High School when it was faced with demolition in2018. Volunteers placed the school on the National Register of Historic Places. We maintain an office currently in the old Legion Building on Clinton Street where we store our research and hold board meetings. • In Progress! Huber Opera House & Civic Center Mission Statement of the Huber Opera House & Civic Center: To preserve the history of the community through building restoration; To promote culture in the arts through education, entertainment, and quality programming; To provide a community center through participation of volunteers, local schools and organizations The Huber Opera House & Civic Center is a non-profit, privately-funded theater that is being restored to its original glory to ensure the rich heritage that began in 1892. The vision continues as dynamic productions, educational programs, and entertaining programming are presented in the beautifully reconstructed décor that honors the past while inspiring the future. Hundreds of children and adults participate in a wide variety of opportunities for cultural enrichment annually. During the past 21 years, the public has been actively involved in the reconstruction of the Huber Opera House. Progress has been made in the lobby, restrooms, community rooms, office, auditorium and exterior of the building. Most of the major work on the structure has been completed, however, many areas still need attention along with on-going maintenance and repairs to continue the restoration process. Many volunteers have participated in the reconstruction, organization, and funding of the reconstruction that has been completed to date. Millions of hours and hundreds of hands continue to support the vision to preserve the building, promote the programming, and provide a community center to use for productions, concerts, weddings, family gatherings, workshops, and meetings. 49 Theater Fort Defiance Players Fort Defiance Players is a community theater group that provides Defiance and surrounding areas with entertainment ranging from plays to musicals. They also mentor the Defiance High School Drama Department. Everyone is welcome to join their group.
Fort Defiance Players presents 3-4 musicals/plays each year. Everyone is welcome to audition, help with lights/sound, or work backstage. They are housed at the Defiance Community Auditorium--with some of their shows being at other area venues. The Defiance Development and Visitors Bureau (DDVB) was established in 2006 as a Main Street Office and Visitors Bureau with the vision to revitalize downtown Defiance and promote areas throughout Defiance all under one roof.
